Snowy Expedition

Appreciate GM events, but don't like to have to do things perfectly, and with some luck, just to get to the event. If I want to be aggravated, I can do something in the real world I'd rather not do, like go pull my own teeth.

I think the main problem was the vagueness of the event.

1. It was held in the Snowland Event location, but many people are not aware of that event. Many people ran to Ystra Highlands.

2. It was never stated that people had to be familiar with that specific event activity.

In the future, if something like this were to be done, it might be a good idea to let people know at the beginning of the festival that this event was coming up & what day. Having advance notice, people could put in some practice in anticipation of the event.

Once again, this was supposed to be fun for everyone, but many people were stuck unable to advance due to limited consumables and became frustrating. People were unprepared for what it took to achieve the prize at the top of the tower.

thank you for the feedback on this event,we will keep this in mind for any further events .
for the record i am not very good at this particular one myself.
i will leave this thread open for constructive feedback.
please adhere to our forum rules.

i do have a few questions regarding events.

1 what type of event do you the players prefer?

2 what areas do you the players have the best luck with being able to dtay in game?

3 do you the players like like pvp type events?

1. i prefer pom events or giveaways or puzzle quests like the black bar one a few years ago.

2. its not the area that is the problem, it is the mass of toons. Maybe set up staggered groups to do these events.

3. Might if i could stay in the game long enough.

The two I liked most were:
1) Where players had to visit the GM's castle. Easy and could be gotten to anywhere there was a guild castle transport.
2) The invasion where the players could go repel various NPCs depending on their level.
3) Can't comment on yesterday's event as I kept getting knocked dow, frozen by frost crystals, ran out of wood, etc. I heard the rewards were good for guilds.

As to PvP events, something like the Arcanium Areana (not into the various Halls) to defend the flag, like siege or defend the GM, aka "Call of the Horns".

To those who kept crashing. I personally installed a client and lowered the settings to their lowest. I still crashed, but only once...which of course knocked me out of the Heron escorted group.

@Iso: The event itself could have been a really fun challenge. Like I pointed out earlier, people were unprepared for what the challenge entailed.

Regardless of whatever future events you guys decide to go with, please let us know so we can prepare for it. We have people on the other side of the world, ie Germany, playing in our guild & they stayed up late for this event. Thankfully, they were able to get the prize.

So if you do this particular festival event again, you might want to post it like 1 month in advance... something like:

Snowland GM Event coming up in a month, 2019-01-06, so get your practice in to race to the top of the tower for prizes! Speed is not important, just get your butts up there for prizes!

^-- That would make it something players would love to do since it'd be a challenge where they get additional rewards. You guys could literally stand up at the top of the tower and players could advance on their own or in groups. The ones that make it will treat it like a Badge of Honor.

Instead, the event devolved into a crashfest where people couldn't stick close to the "mobile hotspot" GM.

Once again, it's not about what the event is, it's about how prepared we are for the event. :)

Having said that, I still believe a large map war between GMs would be fun. Details follow:

1. Each GM has a base on the map
2. Players entering this zone are automatically added to GM teams in a round-robin manner.
3. GMs are NOT allowed to leave their bases
4. GMs are NOT allowed to attack anyone
5. GMs are allowed to heal their teams inside their base
6. The GM is a "mobile flag" and if a GM is targeted by 3 or more opposing GM players
6a. A "captured" GM is forced to sit on the throne for 3 minutes, unable to help their players
6b. The team that "captures" a GM earns 1 point
6c. A "captured" GM cannot be captured again for 5 minutes
7. Rewards are given to the GM teams from highest to lowest

We could call it the Moonlight War :) it'd be epic.

I think starting in a place away from the spot where you teleport into the zone would cut down on a lot of the crashes and lag. Loading into that yesterday with 100+ people there was terrible. Characters were loading in one by one pretty much over the span of a couple minutes. If a person crashes because of that, they are going to continue to crash because everyone is still standing at the same spot where they crashed...

Also, if more than one GM is on, go to separate places away from each, like one in Varanas and one in Obsidian Stronghold for example. That would effectively cut the population in half and cut down on the lag that way.

1 what type of event do you the players prefer?

GM events are great ! some ideas you guys could do would be
A: hide and seeks -"Gm spams various clues to thier location and those folks able to find them recive rewards"
B: Treasure hunt - GM's provide a list of odd materials for folks to collect
C: buff fests - GM's show up and buffs and goodies abound !
D: micro quests. - Insert a npc and have players follow a mini quest line for rewards

2 what areas do you the players have the best luck with being able to dtay in game?
Weekends are always going to be best !

3 do you the players like like pvp type events?
I do but being fairly poorly geared i get destroyed :)

It's going to be a long post, so first - thank you for taking us seriously enough to provide a feedback that we can take time to respond thoroughly to.

We crafted this event in contrast to previous events. Players gave feedback that the invasion events were too kill-heavy, too hectic, and not enjoyable. So we made one that was more cooperative, where users could help each other to the top instead of griping at each other for loot-theft.

In no specific order, I'll try to address some of these points:

Having advance notice, people could put in some practice in anticipation of the event.

So, if people had a month they'd have time to prep. Instead the players had about 4 days. Hands up, anyone who used that time to get prepared? ...anyone? Bueler?

What with the PoM event and XPTP events eating up most of the interim time, I doubt any such effort would have been made if we'd announced earlier. That's actually why we didn't run it weeks ago. The day I had hoped to post it, BAM there's the PoM event, and we'd better not double up on that. Would have low to no turnout.

it might be a good idea to let people know at the beginning of the festival that this event was coming up & what day

Purely from a human-being viewpoint, consider that we have lives and our schedules are subject to change, especially during a family-dominated holiday. Announcing a month ahead of time is a really bad idea when compared to that. The forecast is much more accurate about a week out, and that's what we aim for in announcing our live server events.

Many people ran to Ystra Highlands.

I'm perplexed here. The event description in the forums is about the snowlands, and the image provided is also of the snowlands (box at the top). And, when hyping the event in worldchat, I talked about Snowlands. Not Ystra. It's not true that no attempt at communication was made, but clearly it didn't quite connect. We also put no effort into vagueness: start at the bottom, walk to the top, get loots. That was the brief. Yes, the snowlands has a strat throughout the zone, but it's not impossible and you certainly don't have to get it perfectly right to succeed.

Guys, if you have confusion about an event that is in progress, Ask. A. Guildmate. Probably more than half of the whispers I got went unanswered - just not able to split attention that many different directions AND run an event. It's not because we try to ignore you!

I think starting in a place away from the spot where you teleport into the zone would cut down on a lot of the crashes and lag. Loading into that yesterday with 100+ people there was terrible.

You're not wrong. So what's the holdup? This doesn't even all have to be on the GM: the players themselves can spread out and away from the spawn point, and thus reduce the lag on each other. But they don't, even if we aren't in a zone that encourages people to huddle by the fire. I'll tell you why: alt armies. People log in as many toons as they can, hoping to get something for nothing, and then leave the computer for an hour or two. Two hours after the event started, about 1/3 of the toons that had logged into the snowlands were still right there at the spawn point.

Dear community - you're not 100% helpless. Remove pets, mounts, wings, hide shoulder armor, and for heaven's sake put the fireworks away. The less you render the less you struggle. Does it solve all your woes? No. Does it add up? yeah, especially for those who struggle hardest.

Also, if more than one GM is on, go to separate places away from each

I can't describe how much of an IF this is. As the playerbase shrinks, so does the team. There have been plenty of events run by just one GM, or else one main participant and one other trying to respond to worldchat. Also consider that not all GMs can do gifting. So that actually narrows it further: live events can only be run with at least one SGM+, preferably with backup.

1) Where players had to visit the GM's castle. Easy and could be gotten to anywhere there was a guild castle transport.
So that's Varanas and OS (and Dalanis).

2) The invasion where the players could go repel various NPCs depending on their level.
We did this last halloween. Not more than 6 people participated in the low level invasion. Unless you're thinking of some other example, if so please refresh my memory.

i prefer pom events or giveaways

Of course you do. Everyone does. Understand that PoM events are always set by the CoMas, and NOT YOUR GMS. Same true for trade NPC events, gift NPC events, XPTP events - really anything global is not under the control of a local GM team. Also, events like "stand around, do nothing, get freestuff" are not common since they don't get approved usually. Gameforge prefers us to tie reward strength to effort needed, and that preference is becoming overriding. This is true for board events and live events.

or puzzle quests like the black bar one
.... remind me which example you mean?

its not the area that is the problem, it is the mass of toons. Maybe set up staggered groups to do these events.
Running multiple simultaneous events that are more or less equal is hard for the same reasons listed above. We are few, and not all of us have the permissions needed. I don't expect gameforge to ever approve us to run the same event back to back as players sometimes demand to better fit their schedules. While we can't and don't require people leave their alts at home, GF would grump at the idea of double dipping that repeat performances would allow.

There's more to respond to, but that's a big enough post for one night.

@Heron, for a lot of people, it really was confusing. Most people only know about the tower of wailing wind in ysta. Having said that, after the GM event, many of our guildies have started running snowlands as a nice team building daily. So thank you for that. :) let's how there's something similar in the next festival.

Heron, sorry to hear that so few lower level players participated. Part of that is because this game has become a game of end gamers. There are so few REAL new players it isn't even fun. It seems so many guilds have their ranks field by alts.

Quoted from "gander"
or puzzle quests like the black bar one

.... remind me which example you mean?
If he was thinking of the same one I am, it was my former guild's (Theblacktower) 3 year anniversary back in 2012. We were the *oldest active guild on Artemis* at the time. I had contacted the GMs at the time to organize an event that would give out guild resources. The first NPC was in Varanas, gave you 10 black bars, and gave a riddle to another NPC. You could turn in like 3 of those black bars for resources and the riddle to another NPC. There was the first NPC that gave the bars, and 4 others I believe. You could end up doing 3 of the NPCs per day and 1 bar left over.

The last NPC was glitched for the first day, though. Instead of giving out 10 or 100 (I forget) guild rubies, it gave out 10 or 100 Teardrop Rubies (count as 100 rubies each). People who took advantage of the glitch really liked it, but people who didn't were not a great fan of it, if I remember correctly.

Fun times.
