I'm currently sitting in the lv85/87 proof chest and legs, with set bonuses. I have the option to switch to the lv85/87 instance chest and legs, although with no set bonuses. Would it make sense to switch?

I think it will help because you gain more damage which is important like the physical dps said before

mock up the plussing/tiering that you'd be doing in charplan and see if you would have a raw damage increase, and if it is substantial enough to justify switching.

(check instance ghost stats vs. proof set bonus)

Gotta have the best!! ...no, not really....

Let's do away with focusing every gearing discussion on the forums being based on running end game hard mode for a second and look at it a bit more holistically. The one thing the vast majority of players seem to forget to do is a needs analysis - a realistic one - based on what they run and what they will realistically run in the foreseeable future. If your guild is an end game guild that has a very realistic expectation of running the hard mode version of the latest instance then you probably really do need to focus on the best possible gearing combinations based on your budget and availability.

If you aren't in an end game guild and/or have very little expectation that you will be invited into a hard mode version of the latest instance, and this applies to the vast majority of players right now, then you absolutely do not need the "best" or most ideal gear and statting to do what is realistically within your expectation of doing. So do yourself a favor and quit worrying over what is "best". Get the most satisficing/reasonably available combination of things available to you and start running inis with your guild for the fun of it. :)

does less than obtainable BiS even merit discussion?

the people who can't get BiS will be using what they can get their hands on anyways. most gearing discussions start out with a player asking what would be best, and they usually include the extent of their range, and most responses accommodate as such.

if mid game players asked about gearing, yes, they'd get mid game suggestions. they don't even ask.

also, we do have "affordable" gear builds. I'd look at blankmindeds and zeris budget builds.
