There are many ways to see what you need to do and each one does tell you where and what you need.
If you open your Quest Log (L) and then type in the name of who or what NPC you need to fight or talk to, it will give you the option to "FOLLOW" it. Then you click follow and then a colored arrow appears and you follow it!
Another way is to ask in Zone chat and someone will tell you what is needed.
As far as (outside source) is concerned, Runes Of Magic does not support or suggest using them. Although they may be helpfull, bad things can happen and because it is an outside of game code, it is not supported.
As an example, another player installed a third party application that automatically either sold or deleted items in his backpack. He did not set it right or something went badly wrong and he lost everything and did not know it until it was far too late.

Not saying anything bad about the poster, but I almost completely disagree with this entire statement.
1. The information is not always in the quest text. Sometimes there are conversations between NPCs that you MUST read to get all the required information. Looking in the quest log if you missed something won't help because that dialog WILL NOT be there.
2. Sometimes the information is very unclear or the translation to English is just so bad the point is completely lost.
3. MANY of the required items or NPCs when searched for with "Backspace"(default) or if you right-click and choose follow will give you a result of Requested target cannot be followed or some such nonsense.
I'm sure there are more, but I think those are reason enough. In that case, and this is the one part I agree with, Zone chat is often your best friend. Guild chat may be an even better friend if you are in one.
As far as the player who supposedly had an add-on sell all his gear that is a VERY isolated case if it even happened at all. I read the post from the player and the response from the overwhelming player base that use add-ons every day and love them was that we have no idea how that could happen. Just don't install one that sells gear(probably extremely hard to find anyway) if this "Mentor" has scared you off with that very misplaced comment.
Add-ons from Curse are generally considered pretty safe to use by the player base and you can see from the number of installs that there are many that are extremely popular and heavily used.
