Client Hangs, Eventually Whole PC hangs - Help!

Hi Folks,

My biggest problem with this game is that it frequently hangs. I get a black window, with a cursor indicating something's happening and I should wait. Wait long enough - or try to kill or restart RoM - and the whole PC freezes up, and has to be power cycled to recover.

Windows vista 64 bit.

Is there a workaround or solution?

There are several things that could be causing this. First though you should post your Directx infiormation so we can see if it is a driver issue.
I will start this though with several of the other possibilities.

1 Your computer may be overheating. This will cause your computer to lock up. Only way to fix this is to first go to a store and buy what is called "Dust Off". It is pretty much canned air. Next open the side of your case and see if there is a buildup of dust on teh heatsinks for both the video card and the cpu. You will not miss them they will be big metal things that dominate the inside of your case with a fan on top blowing air through them. Using the canned air blow through teh heatsinks fins to remove the dust. Using a vacuum cleaner after that will get rid of any loose dust.
2 Your power supply may be failing. This one is more difficult to diagnose though. Best way is to buy a power supply checker (they have some on teh internet) and connect it to your power supply. They usually ahve some led lights on them that tell you if any rails are going bad. Just read the instructions for it and you will be fine. Replacing a power supply is not easy. If you feel that you cannot do it then take your computer to a shop that can.
3 Bad hard drive. IF this is the case then you might be screwed. If you ahve the recover discs for your computer all you will ahve to do is replace the hard drive with a new one and using the discs reinstall windows. Make sure you ahve coppies of everything that youw ant to keep first though.

There are a ton other things that can be causing this but the DX will elt us help out more.

Hi, I don't think it's a general computer problem, because it always involves this particular game. I do get overheating sometimes, but then the computer turns itself off rather than freezing this way.

dxdiag claims: "DirectX version: DirectX 11" I imagine you were looking for more details than that, but I'm not sure what, and it's impossible to cut and paste from dxdiag.

OK, first a possibly interesting hint. I had been bringing up dxdiag when the most recent freeze finally took out the whole computer. Now I get a pop-up saying: "DxDiag has detected that there may have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used."

Video driver is very old & needs to be updated.

Consider checking directx updates using the web-installer found at microsoft here;

Error checking & defragging the drive RoM is installed on may help.

As garyl says yourvideo driver is OLD. You need to update to teh newest version. That will fix one part. Next run the built in windows updater to make sure windows is fully up to date. Try those 2 and let us know if it fixed it.

Something else to consider is that RoM doesn't support, or it does a poor job of supporting dual ATI video cards in CrossFire mode. Once you've updated your video drivers (here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx You can use Windows 7 drivers for your setup--I recommend downloading and installing the complete Catalyst package), you should be able to disable and re-enable CrossFire through the Catalyst application.

I'm not sure if DirectX is causing your issue, but you can update your DX installation here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/….aspx?q=directx Use the second choice in the list, the web-based installer. It does not, or should not, require a system reboot after installation.

Following Kalvan's tip, I've found where to disable CrossFire - but possibly it is disabled _for this game_ - apparently default mode tries to judge based on application profiles, and I've no idea whether the ROM client has one. (I'm a bit nervous about breaking something else if I disable it completely, perhaps because I don't know a thing about it.)

And for an added bonus - this fixed a long standing problem with sound I'd "caught" from a buggy Microsoft OS update. (This problem is not the cause of the hangs; they were occurring when I first tried the game, before MS bollixed my system.)

Still no hang. It's rarely lasted this long without hanging, so I think this has probably fixed it. Thank you very much.
