Rotation? Mechanics of using skills?

So, I've been playing this game for a while, but the truth is, I don't feel I understand the game style or the shared terminology. Perhaps I need to be a World of Warcraft graduate?

Today's word needing explanations is "rotation", as in posts like http://forum.us.runesofmagic.com/showthr…t=optimal+rogue

I get the general picture - use these skills, and go from one to another as skills enter and leave cooldown. But that's all I understand. The example post talks about "cooldown rotation" and "burn rotation" - I'm unclear what this implies. (And while we're at it, what is "burn phase"?)

Then there's a perhaps silly question - my humble attempts to handle this game have me putting the skills I use most _during_ combat on the lowest action bar, the one where I can activate them by typing numbers. I then typically wind up typing something rather like 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 ... with pauses for global cooldown. A few higher numbers are reserved for situational items, like healing potions or spells. And I generally have a mouse hovering over whatever skill I have that interrupts nasty spells cast on me - not wanting to cast it accidentally by running my number sequence too high. (As it is, I often use potions by accident.) I've taken most/all buffs off the keyboard-usable action bar - because accidental selection means they tend to wind up in cooldown when I need them most. And there are hordes of skills I never use, because there are only 2 rows of actions in the two bars, and using things direct from the skills menu is totally impractical.

How do experienced people deal with this? I really need to look over someone's shoulder while they play, but unfortunately the RL people I know who play this kind of game mostly live 1000s of miles away from me.

You've pretty much got what a "rotation" is. It's just the order of skills that you use, as in use skill 1, then skill 2, then skill 3, etc. The reason it can get tricky is because some skills have cooldowns (meaning you can't use them again for a certain number of seconds) and some skills require a certain amount of energy/rage/focus which can be run out quickly so you have manage when those skills can/should be used.

When you hear something like burn phase rotation, this means they are in the portion of a boss fight when the players are using up all their short term buffs and consumables (which only last for a short period of time). Examples would be skills that say things like "increases your damage/attack speed by x-% for y-seconds" and can only be used once every few minutes. Once all those buffs wear off, you are no longer in the burn phase, so your rotation will change.

As far as skills and action bars go, I guess that just depends on the player's preference. Some people like to click on things, others keep more used skills on 1-9, some lazier people just use macros or DiYCE to choose skills for them. Since I'm playing on a laptop, I rebound most of the skills I use to the numpad1-9 and move with wasd/qe.

And just in case you dont have all the action bars active (there are 4 built in by default, each with a capacity of 20) you can check by pressing ESC->Interface->Action Bars

When people say cooldown rotation. It usually means the state in which your character uses every single DPS-increasing skill you have at once to maximise your burst damage output during the specific phases in a boss fight (or in most cases to kill the boss as fast as possible). I personally do not have any experience with WoW but I do know that a lot of boss fights have different stages and some rely on DPS or Tanking or doing something.

The same thing applies to a burn phase. In some boss fights in RoM, bosses do not receive damage until you meet certain conditions. So in order kill them faster, people use all their skills that give them boosts at once with some potions and buffs to kill the boss.

When it comes to the skill-lay-out you can always throw more skills on your bars by going to your settings. You have a totle of 4 bars to use and I think you have 20 buttons for each bar. (Use UI-Scale so they fit on your screen without looking too big)

I personally prefer to remain optimised. I have all most used skills on 1 -> 5 then I have shift / alt / cntrl / qertfg keys for pre-combat skills etc.

I always incorperated DIYCE to ensure I can save up on a few keys and so I do not accidentally pop my potions, immunes etc.

Using a mix of everything can help a lot.

Example (I play a Rogue/Scout): Q = Hide, E = DIYCE for Shot Skills and some Consumables, Buffs and Potions), F = Premeditation, 1 = Shadowstab, 2 = Low Blow, 3 = Wound Attack, 4 = Blind Spot Attack, Shift Q = Shadow Prison, Shift E = Sprint, Shift 1 = Fervent Attack, Shift 2 = Assassin's Rage etc.

I tend to alternate Shadowstab with my DIYCE macro if I feel lazy.

Edit: Someone beat me to it.
