Guild Challenges

Could someone please explain the consequences of a "guild challenge". I get the impression that what it means is that for the duration of the guild challenge, it's free PK for members of the other guild on us, and vice versa.

As a relatively low level guild member, this presumably means that if they spot me I'm dead. Delightful "fun", and I'm especially impressed that no one answered on the guild channel when I asked what this was about.

Questions
1) Did some leader of my guild consent to this, or can it be imposed on us unilaterally? (I.e. am I right to blame my guild's officers for this?)
2) What do I lose, if I try to play normally, and get PK'd? I presume I get normal equipment damage and death debt. Do I also lose equipment/inventory, as if I were on a PK server?
3) How common is this (on Reni, if that matters). This is the second time I've been driven onto a non-guild alt when I wanted to play my main character (and before I finished all my dailies - grr); do I need to put up with this as a price for being part of a guild, or should I look for another guild. Or am I overreacting, and I can reasonably ignore it?

War is forced on you, if someone is warring you, there's nothing you can do about it. If you die, you don't lose anything at all, except for the fun of whatever you happened to be doing. It's not like on a PK server. It's not *usually* super common on Reni, but lately [guild name removed] has been warring pretty much any guild weaker than them, so there's not alot you can do about it besides just leaving guild when you get warred.

Thanks for the info. It's good to know it's not my guild's fault.

I hate griefers. *sigh*

I think the first incident was probably consensual, or started by my guild, since someone was asking in the guild channel how to do a guild challenge, effectively. And it looked like people who wanted to fight were gathering in more-or-less agreed on locations. (I went to my house and logged off anyway.) Tonight it seems likely [given the above info] that most of the folks in the guild who were online were afk - except a couple who logged out almost immediately after I saw the challenge notification. (Our guild has a lot of people on EST, so what's prime playing time for me - and apparently prime challenge time for [guild name removed] - is too late for most of them.) That would account for the lack of response, better than them all suddenly turning nasty, though they don't always communicate as much as I'd prefer. And yes, tonight's challenge was "[guild name removed]".

Guild "challenges" (aka "being warred") happen for all sorts of reasons, and it's non-consensual like Borella said- there's nothing your officers could do.

People react to them in different ways.

Yes, it is forced PvP, but there are no consequences beyond inconvenience. You might die, but you res up with no death debt or dura loss.

Some people take a guild war very personally. I had a good friend that actually quit RoM over it, which surprised me, since it's a rare thing that does no long term harm to anyone.

My advice to you if your guild gets warred again is just to do one of these things:

- Suffer through it, or look for lowbees your size to pick on back. Chasing people your own size to fight with, and running away from the big scary people can actually be fun. They can't kill you if they can't find you, so hide and seek is a legitimate strategy.

- Work off some debt in the guild castle (assuming your guild castle is locked, and it should be!), rearrange the stuff in your bank inside your house, or hop inside an instance you can solo. If you're inside an instance or your house, they can't kill you, you're safe.

- Hop on an alt, or go take a walk. Most guild wars last between 30 mins and an hour. It'll be over before you know it.

Open-world pvp is actually kinda exhilarating if you're in the right frame of mind. It really is like a big game of hide and seek. You may even find yourself having fun- but there's no shame in just doing something else if you don't. Either way, don't let it get you down, guild wars don't last forever.

Eh, I usually just continue to do whatever I was doing. There is really no penalty to getting killed in a guild war other than the other guild getting some points for killing you. If you aren't strong enough to kill anyone from the other guild, that doesn't mean you just have to go run and hide. Just have fun doing what you were doing and ignore the guild war. Your guild doesn't even lose anything if they lose the guild war so there really is no point to it. I usually just ignore it.

I think that your pet will lose loyalty and nourishment if you die with it out. At least I remember that happening the last few time I was in a guild war.
