Server scramblin'!

First off I'd like to welcome the addition of the new German server, Dochas!

Now, on to the main question:

How come we haven't begun merging servers? I understand that a lot of RoM's player base speaks German, Spanish and a lot of languages I don't recognize, but creating new servers seems counterproductive.

Taking Osha, my home server, as an example, we're a pretty quiet server as it is. It's a rare treat to run into someone in the same Zone as you while questing. But there are large gaps (heh, originally I wrote faps) of time where there are no world chats being posted, no trade is happening, no one's in Logar and no one's doing daily quests! I was under the impression that the first M in MMO stood for Massive, not Miniscule.

I suppose my main question is: Will we see server mergers any time soon? Osha could use some new playmates. And more people to keep Kydra at bay.

They didn't create a new US server, that would be counterproductive. If the German side has enough demand/population for another server, then I don't see anything wrong with that.

As far as US server merges, I remember other threads mentioning that. I think there was something with character/guild names, databases, etc that aren't set up to make that happen nicely.

I wonder... If the Powers-That-Be have the ability to design siege in such a way that toons from different servers can co-exist, why can't they create a brand new server and allow people to move to the new server. This would be a special server that new toons cannot be created on for the first month or so to prevent people from "camping" names.

Then it would be a first-come, first-serve situation where a player selects the toon they want to move to the new server.

Once the registration has been processed, a message will inform the toon that they need to go to their house and a button will appear like the "Enter Siege" button... call it "Move to New Server"

When you click that button, the toon is then moved to an intermediary zone and all data gets copied to the new server.

If a previously moved toon's name conflicts, then the toon is temporarily renamed: Server_Name ( ie, Reni_Twerp )

Unless a toon is a guild leader, they will be un-guilded to make it easier to just get into the server

When all the data has been copied over, the toon is tp'd to their house in the new server.

Now, guilds... we don't want to lose all of our resources here, so when a guild leader makes the transfer request, there's a little more work that needs to be done.

The guild leader must inform everyone that the guild will be disbanded on the old server when they accept the transfer to the new server

The guild leader receives the same treatment, but retains guild information and guild data is copied over to the new server

If a previously moved guild has the same guild name, the new guild name will be SERVER_Guild Name ( ie Reni_Sexton )

Once the data has been copied, the guild leader is then sent to his/her house

Exclusively on the new server will be an npc that allows SERVER_ named toons/guild leaders change temp names to something else. The new names cannot be previously used names.

A system as described above could allow for a successful server merge into a brand new server that would make for very little downtime.

My main point is that currently, the siege server copies player data pretty successfully.

Froggy & GF always said its not possible for them even though the basic coding of the game is simply just Runewaker's Radiant Arcana.
The only publisher of RA/RoM that has merged servers asaik is the version ran by Tahadi that merged their PH server into the AE server though their version of RoM was changed to Runes of Might after since the AE server had been named RoMight whereas the PH server had it RoMagic though.

If they can do it, why can't we???

Couldn't locate their old site - think it was shutdown after the transfer - which had all the fine details of the merger but there were stuff involved...like you couldn't take things in your mailbox, the only things u could take with you was ur backpack items & bank & house items I think....I forget. A brief summary of that transfer can be read at http://portal.e-games.com.ph/main.php/ru…tails-and-faqs/

Their new site for those servers is http://rom.tahadi.com/en/ ....I'm uber jealous of the 5x xp/tp they're getting from Tahadi O_o

What they did before chapter 4 was different. They weren't putting those characters on an already-populated server, if I remember correctly, so there was no risk of data corruption. If they try to transfer characters from a live server to another live server, it could result in more than just that character getting corrupted.

Merges should be possible, IMO, as they are in a lot of games, but I'd rather keep my characters intact than for Gameforge to try doing something they (apparently) don't have the tools/knowledge to do.

At first i didnt understand why the idea of server merges/toon transfers struck fear into the hearts of who ever holds the golden keys. I took a few programming classes and lesson one was to do a logic map before putting fingers to keyboard. Since im not very good at programming i tried to logically figure why merges and transfers is difficult, so here is what i figure (and feel free to call BS here)
A server is like a painting, it holds the environment and characters of what ever is being painted.

If someone tried to change said painting or tried painting something on it, it will erase details of the original.

I think the problem isnt with the toons themselves but the memory the environment and the NPCs have about the toon

Each NPC knows when each toon completed a quest, event, trade whatever. What a merge or transfer would need to be able to do is make sure the memory of their interactions stays intact.

For instance if i from the palenque server get merged or transfered to the Reni server, would all interactions with the NPCs be transferred as easily?

The programmers would need to literally transfer all the data from every interaction to the environment and NPCs related to the thousands of toons onto another server. Keep in mind how different my NPC interactions memory is with someone else's even on the same server.

I can imagine how difficult it would be to transfer all the memory data for thousands of players without running into problems.

If RoM was just a PVP type game where NPCs dont really remember much about the toons then no doubt they would have merged servers by now.
