Settings Not Saving.

I've been trying to turn down my display settings so I can actually play it without lag. And every time I try changing the main settings, it tells me I need to restart the game before the effects will take action. So I restart the game, and the settings just reset back to what it was. I have made sure the "read only" option was unchecked. And I ran it as administrator, I have also removed the file from "Program Files". And nothing has been working. I don't know what else to do. Can someone help me?

Proceed with caution. Somebody will probably show up to tell me that I am all wrong, but taht is ok, cause they will then tell how to do it right. You can edit the config file to change 0's to 1's or vice versa. and some of the settings are in percentages, like .4 or whatever. Then save the file.

I had same problem as you, and that is what I did to fix it. changes seemed obvious in the config file once I had it open and could read it.

Mine recently started doing that again shortly after I switched hard drives and just copied the rom folder to the new one.

As far as I can tell, rom is not even trying to write to the config file. I made a copy in a temp folder, then deleted the original thinking it would make a new copy, started the game and made changes, logged out and retried, it never made a new copy.
I have most of the settings figured out, as Auros said, Most settings are on= one, off = zero, others are percents (0.00 to 1) others, view distance etc are whole numbers from 1 to ????

Make a copy of the client.config.ini file and experiment!

I'm beginning to think it's something with game forge live, simply because all the setting trouble started shortly after it came out.

When your Opening up The Launcher to Click Play, Within that Launcher should be some Settings, If you change the settings in that Launcher it will change within the Game. Dunno why Gameforge done it that way but happened to me when i did a complete re-install (complete Re-install fixed crash's majorly which is good), but the Settings need to be Changed within the Launcher for me, So just check that. Although it sucks because you cant see in-game if thats how you want it but just try it i guess.

Also, in your Runes of Magic folder, there is a file called client.config.ini.

You might want to check and make sure it's not set to "Read Only", as this will prevent video settings from being changed.

that was actually the first thing I checked....and it was not. I even changed it to read only then back again still did not take the changes from in game, had to manually change the config.

Since 6.0 release, the settings in game do not save with a game restart for some reason. Simple solution is to adjust the settings at the launcher, before the game(as in client) loads. BB did a quick blurb on how to in his video of reducing lag for siege.

This works, but you may still need to edit the ini file to set resolution. The highest resolution I can through the launcher is 1200x800. luckily that is on of the first listing in the ini, and pretty straight ahead, just type in the resolution you want.

I was having this same issue, and manually adjusting the config files for graphics and sound, then making it read only fixed the issue- except for one setting. I spent an hour fiddling around trying to figure out how to max out the 'character detail' slider, and I finally found it. Wanted to post it here in case someone else gets stuck like I did, as the slider seems to be reversed/broken. In the config file:

[character detail]
paperdoll detail=3

^ Needs to be changed to 0 for high detail, and 4 for low detail. Hope this helps someone! (Sorry to necro if there's such a thing on these forums. Just wanted to save someone the aggravation I went through figuring that out)

You need to configure the settings in the launcher, not the in-game options. Basically, open up RoM, and before hitting 'play', instead hit the configuration button and go from there. Your settings should be saved 100%.
