As I recall, when you accept the quest to kill the Gargoylem, you are given a 30 minute buff by the quest giver.

Try abandoning the quest and re-taking. Then get on a mount and charge past all the mobs outside the instance.

Additionally, the OP doesn't need to finish that quest right away. He could always pick up his second class (if he hasn't done so already), level it and his first class up a bit more, then return to Yrvandas and finish the quest. That's what I've done a couple of times.

yup...I don't think I did it on my dwarves until almost lvl 20...
