A few questions for a returning player

And before anyone snaps my neck, yes I have read a great chunk of the other returning-posts to see what the FAQ were and how they were answered. So, it won't be that much of a relapse I swear.

So, down to business.

I haven't played since a few months into chapter 4 (the elves introduction yeah?), and ended my spree with my Lv.62K/P. As much as I would love to return to her, however, I've already taken into consideration a lot of the changes over the past years and the inflation for the most part, and figured I'm just going to make things smooth sailing, and start anew (if I can remember my log ins, maybe take the remaining gold off her to get a head start on a new toon).

I live on the east coast, plan to be on frequently aside from work. I favor the healer aspect, but am adaptable to any roll. So! Onward to the questions:

  • Is there any spec out there that is still in demand? I know when I left, tanks worth a damn were still pretty scarce.
  • What would you say is the most populated US server? Anywhere I can feel remotely welcomed after I get out of the desert that is the starting plains?
  • How difficult/easy is it to get into a Guild now and days? From what I've read, it seems everyone tends to stay within their inner circles more than pugs or even shouts past that of goldspammers.
Long story short, I don't expect any special treatment by no means. I'm just trying to get back into a MMo because I need something to do after work, and Square Enix's support line is nonexistent for me to return to my old addition (FFXI). Just a friendly atmosphere, people I can relax and chat with, quest with whenever I catch up, so on so forth. Not looking for anything hard-detailed into the endgame sorts (though that's not to say I won't want to do a few instances here and there or some spurratic boss runs. Make things interesting yeah?).
I appreciate anyone for the tips / replies, and hope that in a few hours I can thank you in virtual person when the game finishes the install process!

on my phone, so this will probably be very short and unsatisfactory:

I'd try palenque, reni or osha for a server if you plan on starting over.

out of the healing combos, d/wdn is one of the top IMO, and healers are always welcome...

getting a guild is easy. hard part is finding a guild you feel comfortable in(not saying some are bad, but different guilds cater to different types of people)...

Artemis is most populated server AFAIK, but they do not seem to be as friendly as the ones I mentioned...
my r/p can outdps r/m. your name is stupid.

mages should stack dex. word.

Perih, I would strongly recommend that you remove your old Chapter IV installation and begin afresh with the current 6.0.1 installation files. If you want to avoid the Gameforge Download Manager (and you should), go here: Manual Downloads for the 6.0.1 RoM Client

Read Inferiority's starter post, then use the links he's provided to download a complete set of installation files--including the all-important RoMSetup_6.0.1.2650.exe file. If you use the FileFactory or Depositfiles links, there will be a short delay to download each file, unless you have a Premium (pay-for) account with them. Remember that once the game is installed and has patch-updated, you will need to change the Region to USA from Europe.

The new client installation will help you avoid possible/probable texture file corruption and will definitely shorten the updating time.

Welcome back!

Reni being my server and the somewhat friendly atmosphere of the guilds and folks there (we have pinkhat, can't get much more friendly then that). We also seem to have the largest concentration of "newbie" friendly guilds such as Disturbed. A lot of guilds on Reni seem to be very casual and not worried about getting to endgame as fast as possible, just as long as they can play and work together, they're happy.

I've poked around in Osha a bit and can say that the Osha server also looks relatively friendly with some guilds who's goals are not to get to endgame quite as fast.

If you're looking for population, Grimdal is a server to definitely avoid unfortunately.

Tanks...I really haven't been keeping up with that. During Chapter 4 I think Knight/X got a bit of a buff and then they nerfed them right back down. I'm still doing decent amounts of damage though, and aggro is easier to maintain then it used to be. I do quite enjoy playing my Knight/Priest and can't wait until I get him maxed out with new gear and level 82 and get the Priest side up (I'm lazy and leveling a Mage at the same time).

Guilds, you are correct, most stick to a clique of sorts. I don't know many (if any at all) that have multiple toons in multiple guilds nowadays, not because of the 'secrets' of the specific guild, but because of the friendships established and you kind of mold into the guild that you're in. It's still relatively easy to get into a guild though despite the clique-y feeling.

If you can dig up your old account I would definitely try and get the gold off of him so you can get some decent gear or stuff to last you through your re-leveling adventure.

@Cike I appreciate the response, honestly any tips are as satisfying in my book. ^^ Funny, even when I played earlier, Artemis wasn't in best reputation... but if Osha is still well and populated, then that might be where I'll head back to (was my previous server).

@Kalvan I had long ago removed and redone my computer since then, so no other files prior the Gameforge should be in my system to interrupt anything or cause any future flaws. I'm in no rush so I went ahead and just started fresh out the box with the Gameforge client and installation. I'll go look at Interiority's post though just to make sure I haven't missed out on anything that isn't from said patches (also a bit interesting that Gameforge acknowledges my Aion client, hah).

Thanks for the heads up though! If I did still have data on board, I honestly wouldn't have thought twice to dump it or even manually update.

@Jguy Pinkhat? Fancy o.o It's definitely tempting, but being that my old account is bound to Osha, I have a bit of a bias tempt in me to go there. Perhaps if I can't log in on my ex-account or that she has less than I expect of her, I'll just log over to Reni on the new account/toon. It definitely sounds like the atmosphere I'd enjoy.

I appreciate all of your replies! It definitely helps me out on those small choices and my indecisive nature. XD

Imma throw this out there but sounds like you know what you are already doing. If you are going to be a free to play player. Indigo/Grimdal are the cheapest servers to play on. Indigo is the more populated of the PVP servers but not as popular as PVE for some odd reason that I cannot figure out. On Indigo you can swap gear between toons with ease and no cost and gear can be freely traded without ABL's making our lives much easier. Also you do not need to worry about PK dropping anymore as ROM has pretty much killed that off.

FYI - The good part about RoM is the accounts aren't 'bound' to any server. For example, my main primary account with my 80 Knight has toons on Reni, Artemis, Osha and Palenque, so even if you created a toon on Osha, you can still create a toon on Reni. The DIAMONDS you buy aren't transferrable, but you can create toons on multiple servers. :)

And, of course, everybody forgets Govinda....What I would do if I was starting over would be to create a toon on each server and visit them each to get an impression of the culture of each one...they do vary. Find your best fit and stick there. With the servers going up and down lately I had a chance to play some of my other toons on other servers, and of them all, Reni is where I would go. YMMV.

Who is that pinkhat critter? Never heard of him.

K/P is a very decent tank these days, and if you are going healer, P/K is likewise a very usable combo. If you are continuing with old character, there is nothing wrong with going that route. You might have a big of learning curve, sure, they changed quite a lot of skills in one of the patches. But, good combo.

If you think there is a chance some of your old friends are around, that would be another reason to go to your old server, Osha. Otherwise, all servers are good, but I'd avoid PVP ones. Reni, of course, is the best, but hey... :p
-- Rustyx --- 92R / 92S / 92M on Reni (Guild KnightShift). Yes, running the new FOTM R/M, cause I am not elf enough to be WD/S.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

@Mrpushpop I definitely want to try and avoid spending a buck and a half like I have in the past (spent nearly $400 on my K/P easily...). But that was due to trying to stick with some friends in which I was a mod in an endgame guild with. Either catch up and stay head in the crowd, or be left behind and thrown out. But, now and days its' not the case. Just need something to keep my mind off the harsher means in life. XD Unfortunately PVP isn't as grand to me, just because I thoroughly enjoy PVE... I mean hey, if I don't get to the endgame, I can always treat it as a RPG status and just do the things I can by myself. But communication is always a plus!

@Jguy I did try to get in touch with my earlier accounts on Osha using my previous log-in accounts, but it doesn't seem that they even exist anymore. When Frogster was in charge, the ability to hook multiple accounts to one email was allowed. So when I try to get my password resetted, I get 5 different emails on different log-ins... though it seems for Gameforge, its' no longer allowed(?) and thus I can't get any of my old stuff back. I sent in a support ticket, though I doubt it'll be any good.

But I have started up a new account completely, I've made myself humble onto Reni, and look forward to crossing paths with something beyond that of NPCs. However, I'll enjoy the smooth pathing that is Elven Island just a bit more before journeying to Logar and admist. XD

@Auros I adapt quite easy to people, and honestly being a lone-wolf sort deal isn't something that I'm against. I'm sure no matter where I go, I'll eventually find a cliche that I can somewhat tolerate. If not-- well, can always start my own lil triumph guild! The one man army!

@vfwiffoI absolutely loved my K/P. The only thing I didn't enjoy, was the soloing due to the nonexistent DPS at the time. I have read / heard of the buffs they've received, but by the looks of it, D/WRD seems all the more tempting just because its a road I haven't taken yet. When swapped to P/K on the other hand... ohho~ I could certainly do my fair share of healing and surviving.

Thank you so much for all of your input, its greatly appreciated and its' nice to see that the community is still responsive and for the most part, kind. ^^ For occupants of Reni, perhaps some day we'll cross paths, but for now, I have quite the catching up to do! Thank you again for your time and words and happy hunting. :)

Bwahaha. Success. Another victim occupant of the Reni server. :3
