i used theromwiki for basic stuff, as it's easy to use/find stuff, and usually decently up to date. unfortunately, i have found the best replacement for runesdatabase is to have like 16 zillion addons...

Yeah runesdatabase still works. Maybe try clearing your browser history/cookies and give it another go?

No, runesdatabase is not working. I tried on firefox and internet exploder, and then downloaded opera and tried there. It might be a regional exclusion or something. Try using to theromwiki and rom-welton

I'm from Germany and I have the same problem. The site is not maintained anymore, but I hope runesdatabase comes back on-line soon. Although it is old, it is still a very good database.

* there is no formal connection of GF to Playata, right? Maybe GF might consider approaching Playata to check if it would make sense from the point of view of both companies for GF to take www.runesdatabase.com over? (the little money Playata makes on the adds would go to GF; and for players: maybe we might hope for the runesdatabase not to vanish whenever current owner decides so [even if it was not updated, just to keep current content]) What do you guys think?

* TOS says "you agree that you will not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade or resell the Services for any purpose". I wonder if it makes it illegal to save a copy of already rendered pages for yourself on your computer. I was thinking about running recursive wget (or some other crawler) tonight to have a copy for myself (even if search would not work, it would be possible to grep - online www.runesdatabase.com would still be better and I would use it, but I would have a backup in case it does go offline); does anyone know German law? Can keeping a personal copy of publicly available web page be forbidden by the provider in his TOS (if the copy is strictly for personal purposes only)?

It would be nice to know though, if it got solved by itself (Playata is updating something?) or did someone from GF actually pick up the phone and kicked some [...]. In other words: it's still not clear to me what's the connection of Playata and GF and if there is a point reporting not-working of www.runesdatabase.com on this forum...

From what I remember, they stopped supporting RoM while back, and there was announcement or something like that.

I believe YoMan knows better how is that connected... while back they had people playing with program that collected data to get all that good stuff in...

Just ask YoMan if he is still around... or use Rom-Welten.com instead of runes database.

I bugged that know-it-all Yoman. ROM is not the only database created by Playata, and others are in same boat, not really maintained. And they are also apparently sporadically acting up.

Site has been up and down quite a bit lately, I am afraid at some point it will come down and not get back up. Only so far you can get without it having to be someone's paying job to keep the thing up. Being a ex-guildie of guy who maintained ROM Armory and Siege Top 50 ROM sites, I have a glimpse on the workload it takes to keep a site up. It is not pretty.

Yep, I can understand the reason things do disappear in time. Still - it would be a huge loss of information if runesdatabase ever simply stopped working... That's why I wondered how to get a "personal copy" (even if using it would be cumbersome; I don't mind).

These xmls are really limited. These are just lists of quest/item/skill ids and names. Seems like info Playata got from Frogster, and not an export of their database. Still interesting in some cases, but NOT comparable to the live online info in runesdatabase (no quest/skill descriptions, no comments, no info about sources of items etc.).

Also, I tried "crawling" last night and it's also not that straightforward: both the comments and info about sources of items etc. are not simply parts of the html, they are fetched later by your browser (in javascript). So at least simple wget didn't work... I'll try some other things but meanwhile - if you guys have more ideas they would be very welcome (the legal question is tricky anyway, but I would say - if I can look at the page and copy and paste the comments, why would I not be allowed to do this in an automated way IF it's just for my personal use and I'm not providing this info further to other ppl; tricky though...).
