Flying for Real

Today, winged/flying mounts do not actually fly, just look pretty.
Most agree that REAL flying would be a fantastic addition to ROM.
Unfortunately, it is prohibitively difficult for the developers to
implement (Blizzard/WoW expended a massive effort).

However, I'd like to ask this from a different point of view.
What if flying mounts were able to rise a MAXIMUM of 20ft-to-50ft
above the ground?
Also, flying would be restricted to existing pathways/areas.
The view is not much different then standing on a hill top. No topographical mods required.
This optionally might enable players to avoid combat with all non-flying mobs (Harpies, etc.)

Hopefully, it would be MUCH easier for the developers to implement.
Any chance this might be considered?

:D

I like flying so much that Id be fine with making it the only new feature in 5.0.

it is not just the topical aspect that has to be considered. you have to factor in mob agro, certain barriers that are not suppose to be crossed, siege war(flying into the castle) and probably more that i can not think of

I think Rom might consider it, given the $$ it could make. Obviously, it would be sold at an exorbitant amount of diamonds, and I'm sure a lot of players would buy it whether to try it out or to show off. It would still be a lot of work, but a lot of income too.

I dont think its considerable at all. Given at how the world is built, the phenomenal amount of work needed to be done to implement them. And though it would be nice. I really dont see the reason to. With all the options to teleport literally anywhere you want, the snoops, and the use of portals.

I really dont see the point other than to just look cool.

its impossible, peroid.

the way the physics engine in this game works, it could never happen, or if it did it would be so glitchy, it wouldnt even be funny.
The only way they could make flying mounts is to not only go through every zone and redo barriers to avoid glitching or people getting stuck somewhere. Then they have to add in a dynamic Y axis barrier, which would be incredibly difficult as different maps with different y axis values (elevations).

Then they would have to complete rewrite the physics engine, which is the most complex piece of code in any game lol.

Ok say they do all that and can make flying mounts work, then what? what would you REALLY want/need a flying mount for? oo look at me i can fly over a fence! wtf is the point?

What would be the point? It wouldn't improve gameplay in any way, and knowing RW, it would be glitchy as hell. There's already a ton of bugs with terrain to begin with. It's not like you'd even use it to get anywhere...Snoop ports or TP runes are far more efficient.

I just listened to one of the RoM podcasts which did mention info on flying. Swag said this idea would never make it to reality because it would be too much work for the developers.... Nothing against Swag but i feel that is BS from the developers. What is our diamond money going to?? Millions of players are funding this game. I would have have though that developers would want to make the game even better and more efficient?

We have paid and over paid for our mounts and wings...

I had one idea for the mounts.

For all land mounts travel speed should be 80% faster than walking

For all air mounts travel speed should be 70% faster than walking and should be able to fly over mountains and forests.

For all players with wings they should be able to travel 60% faster than walking and should be able to fly.

I think for this system its a win/win for everyone. I think it is also very fair.

I have played multiple MMOs such as WoW, Aion and even a crappy game called Shaiya. All of those games gave you the ability to fly. With a logical and working game mechanics.

So for Runewaker to say or think it would be too much work to implement flying into RoM is very disappointing.

I usually say something is "Too Much work" when I have messed up and I dont want to back track and correct.

Would it make it better to call it "Too much work to spend on a large scale, giant, humongous, multi-month, game-breaking effort to achieve something of no particular use while losing the customer base leaving due to that development effort pulling resources from other changes that are actually useful and needed", then?

Last I heard their was a way to fly and people were using it in seige. If thats possible I assume they could easily make the flying available but I think your missing the point.

The playable area of the game is not just doubled then, imagine playing above the land. you could say ohhh just limit flying to 10 feet or W/e but enabling this would allow for exploitation.

Currently Ive heard of seiges where players appear in front of you but are actually in the sky above you. how annoying does that sound?

Lets all just agree to stick to the ground, maybe in a few zones they could offer an under water level that would give a new feel to the game without offering an unlimited movement area. Im talking actually under water not this bs that is HOTO lol

remember flying also negates falling

without going into too many details, that flying is a big cheat and easily detectable by other people, it will look like they are jumping far into the air very quickly (a short fraps of them doing it can get them a nice ban-hammer to the face btw ;D)

Lets look at this from a development stand point, something I've got some experience in.

Flying, in all aspects (mount as well as player) is not something hard to implement, as some have pointed out the fly hack does just that.
In fact the game engine supports flying and its simply a matter of turning it on or allowing certain mounts/objects/players to do so.
The various "flying" mounts in game already have this turned on, albeit restricted to only a few inches off the ground.

However, In cases like wow (since you've been using it as a comparison)
it took wow 3-4 years and the second expansion to implement flying. Why?
Because the base game (vanilla) was NOT built with the intent of being seen above a certain ground level.
If you've ever busted out a sandbox of WOW or seen videos of such, you'd see that going above a certain level (either using the fly/swim hack or a mount) causes buildings to disappear.
These are lovingly called 'Falses'
When viewed from a certain level objects, terrain or buildings are displayed appropriately to the user when in fact they are a false image, or an incomplete one at best.

When The Burning Crusade came out Blizzard had fully intended for flying mounts to be part of the game, Outlands was built around this fact. every terrain, building and object was modeled and textured as such.

It took another 3 years and two more expansions for blizzard to revisit old world (vanilla) and RE BUILD all the terrain, objects, buildings and textures to allow for flying mounts.
This of course was after blizzard had stated OVER and OVER that they would NEVER allow flying in old world, it was a logistical nightmare, and would take hundreds of man hours to re do.
It took not only the lore of the game, but an entire expansion to allow for it.

There are still sections of old world barred from flying in, for various reasons involving the way games are often developed that I don't feel like going in to.

The Tl;Dr version of the above wall is:
Yes, Flying can be done.
Yes, Flying is already implemented in one form or another
Yes, Runewaker could do it.
No, Runewaker SHOULDN'T do it.( read the wall of text)
And as a few people have pointed out, Why in the name of what ever god/deity/powers that be that you believe in would you want RW to take precious resources and man hours away from things that NEED fixing to implement something as cosmetic (and lest face it... its cosmetic) as flying.

And yes, Fly/Swim hacks are illegal and a 'Bananable" offense.

Oh an I tottally forgot about Siege. Flying mounts in Siege...... L O L

Yes ppl I know its a hack, that wasnt the point. I was to show that it already exists.

Im still on the no flying boat tho.

But, I hear their is a neat pile of jellyfish out in the ocean in coast of opertunity.... O.o maybe something to look at.

Lets imagine a world where you swim around instead of walk... maybe an underground cave system. O.o that would be fun to design for FA RW. currently I believe you can fight under water maybe add some floating land mass to allow transporting and viola water world 1-1 :)

Not only is this plausable but, I think something like this is already in the works and it wouldnt effect old zones either.

wow!!!! I didnt actually think of the siege issue. I guess that would be a little bit retarded. But that is the only downside i can see to flying. Although i am sure they could only allow ground mounts in siege?? Maybe i am just infatuated with flying. It just looks cool and it seems right in my eyes.

Oh, by all means, implement flying mounts that really fly. Only limit them to an expensive 15 minute (plus or minus 3 minutes). Falling damage when your mount goes away. OOOPS!!!

I agree with the fact that flying would be very cool and give this game some more credit, however, i also agree with the fact that the game engine would have to be altered to adjust. Many people know that the ever popular World of Warcraft started out using the Warcraft 3 rts engine, which made things smooth, BUT did you also know that years later Blizzard reworked the engine to work flying into the game? So i do think its possible, and i also think that Runewaker would do well to consider making some serious changes to the Engine to accomodate for flying and also maybe rework some terrain to be larger so it could accomodate for the flyspace. My friend who plays WoW says his guild literally flies to a mountain far away to start a Raid, how cool would that be if this feature was enabled in RoM?

FYI, flying mounts, as they exist in RoM is *not* a form of flying. You simply create a model with a gap at the bottom..boom, flying mount. You obviously don't have the experience you claim to have if you really think that is a form of flying and it's just "locked" a few inches from the ground.

IF flying really takes THAT long, I'd rather have underwater zone. They won't have to redesign everything, they just have to make new zone that adapts to being viewed from different heights.

I could agree with Ryth's Mount Stats

I dont understand why most people are so against a flying system in this game. Its actually kinda weird how you all defend a NO FLY ZONE. Honestly if you are worried about flying in siege. You need to think out side the box. They would sort that out. If you are worried that RoM will look like a WoW clone....a little too late for that eh? Those bickering about it being months and months of hard work.
