We have moved to new board. https://forum.runesofmagic.gameforge.com/Come join us.
We are new here and would like some help from experienced players.
First of I'd like to say hi, a few of my friends and I would like to start playing this game.
We have been playing WoW for almost 10 years now and we'd like to try something new and my friend suggested RoM.
Since we are new to the game we thought that making a forum thread asking for some beginner tips and advice would help us since its our first time playing the game.
I would appreciate if you could give us any tips about the game, playing with a group, economy of the game, what is majorly different in this game from WoW and that sort of stuff.
We would appreciate positive feedback and we're looking forward to starting to play this game!

I can't recommend irc enough, even if just for quick questions/tips. plus, you'll meet a good number of the more vocal members of the awesome community.
aside from that, I'd post toon name/server, as it will aid established players that want to help find you. there are some nice people out there fond of drive-by handouts for noobs.
if you guys want to just play the game without worrying about endgame capability and all that stuff, just roll whatever toon looks interesting, and you should be able to decide what you want before you get too far into the game, when starting and catching up a new toon would be a hassle.
a lot of the chapter1-3 content is (IMO) the best, so don't feel like you need to rush to endgame. take your time and enjoy yourself. if you have any questions/need help, I'd suggest irc if you can't find anyone ingame.
my r/p can outdps r/m. your name is stupid.
mages should stack dex. word.
...in this game just about EVERYthing needs the use of diamonds.
I wouldn't say that's entirely true - you can easily get by with just Phirius Tokens (from Daily Quests) for a lot of things and you'll really only want diamonds to possibly get a mount whilst levelling. However, there's plenty of 'free' alternatives to getting mounts.
I would say that once you begin to reach endgame levels (currently, cap is at 95), you'll likely feel that diamonds become a bit more of a necessity.
You'll be able to obtain them by spending money, or by investing a lot of time ingame to buy them from other players with gold.
One note of caution:
A lot of us long-term players are very cynical so take most things you read here with a pinch of salt.
RoM is a lot of fun, but like all MMO's, it has it's flaws. We're all just so highly proud of the fact that it seems to have many more than most other MMO's!
Anyway, let me link you to a couple of things that you may find useful:
Also, over on the EU forum, we have a Free-to-Play guide that, whilst containing some old and out of date info (e.g. Cedric), still has a lot of very valuable information.
Now, I will end my post saying "Welcome to Taborea" and I hope you'll enjoy your stay.
If you are on the Erebos server join Avengement Guild. We have some long time players that would love to help you out. Just ask around for an Avengement Guild member we can get you an invite. Guild buff towers can help you on your quest to the top.
If you're on Mithras and need some help look me up. I play most early evenings (central US time) around and after siege war. Here are my suggestions:
1. Consider what you want out of this game. If you want to be a casual, low end or mid range player then go slow. Choose dual classes that you feel fit your playing style. Decide you want to heal, dps, tank, buff/debuff, or try something random. There are class combos that don't appear to work well, but maybe you could find something new and be the first one to work it. If leveling isn't your thing you can always master a skill to make things and earn gold that way. Most people use alts as refiners but it could always be your main toon if you chose.
2. Ask in chat. that's already been covered.
3. Don't try to be OP from the start. Up until level 50 you'll power through leveling with just quests and dailies on both classes. The gear you get from quests and instances are good enough and don't need any work on them until AFTER you hit 50. If you play well enough you could even make it to 60 without spending a dime.
4. Joining a guild would be helpful if you need gear, help, assistance, etc. If you're looking for a guild that can be helpful but isn't serious, then you can join us crazy people at Disturbed on Mithras.
Runes of magic is probably the mmo that offers a lot of dept and it will probably take you a while to get used to all the different features. here are few recomandation I would like to share.
1) I would recommend you get familiar with the different options the game offer. You can find tutorial/explanations on the forum. I would recomend checking out the following: pets, zodiac pets, housemaids buffs, magic wardrobe, crafting, cards, siege, minigames, elite skills, statting system, runes, equipement durability, plussing. Also check out on the forum what classes are viable for what you like to play, there are quite a few different strong choices wether you like pve, pvp or even just playing something different.
2) siege as soon as you can. the siege title system is probably the thing that will take you the longest time to level up, better get working on that ironblood will as soon as possible. After you decide on what to play you should try to find a guild and siege with then as often as you can. Do not get discouraged if you cannot do too much in siege, it is for all levels and gear and you are starting from the bottom. You can still find ways to be usefull and help your team regardless of your level and gear though.
3) do your daily quests everyday. it's the easiest/least expensive way to level up your secondary class, there are quite a few fast and highly rewarding(at least exp wise) daily quest in coast of opportunity and xaviera and you should take advantage of it. Most class combos are reliant on getting level 60 and 70 elites to reach their full potential and that means you need your secondary class to reach level 60 or 70 for that. there isn't enough quests to do it without daily quests or grinding and grinding exp on rom is not really something you ever want to do.
4) ask ppl about what addons they use, there are quite a few very good addons in this game that will make you save a LOT of time, getting information about those and set up properly is not a bad thing to start with.
5) do your minigames. In rom you can straight up go for the gear you want, no need to make progression gear really. You might need to get some gear after you hit redhill/tergotten bay(lvl 67-70), but for the most part the questing gear does a good enough job. The first way to access late game stats is at level 50 with mini games, for many players they are one of the main way to make money/gear up and doing them daily starting from level 50 can really help you out with money in the long run.
6) Learn to leave some quests for later, this will help you a lot with not getting frustrated with the game, many quests will be impossible for you to do at the time you get it and sometimes even later. A good example of those are instances quests or world bosses quests. A lot of new players seem to be very bothered with the idea they can't complete those and just stop progressing because of it. Just have to put them on the side and keep going, maybe you can get them done at a later date when you are stronger.
7) enjoy the game, really rom is rich in possibilities to enjoy from card collecting to title hunting to running endgame passing by siege and crafting hope you find something you like and can share with your friends, it isn't a perfect game, there are bugs, you will crash at times, but it trully is a great game worth exploring.
if you have more questions about the game feel free to send a pm or go on IRC and ask

I do have to say RoM is my favorite MMO so far and I think it may become yours. This game offers so much variety in play styles and you as the player can choose how you want to play. Pvp is not forced upon your character here so you can choose when or if to engage in that aspect of the game. For most of the instances you can enter them as a group or solo if you think your character is strong enough. Being able to enter low or mid lvl dungeons solo later will help you with gathering equipment to sell to NPCs for gold.
Some of my tips include:
1. If you are a completionist type player and want to get cool titles, do not skip yellow quests in an area unless, like one person replied, they are an instance one or world boss one. Many of the quests in this game are interconnected and you will end up doing a lot of backtracking later if you need to complete those later on. Coast of Opportunity and Xaveria both have interconnected quests. There are a few starter areas in this game that start with lvl 1 quests to help you with lvling your 3 classes. If you balance your main quests properly with daily quests then you may not run out of quests later on. I still have not ran out of quests.
2. I do not suggest power-leveling your first main character. Balance lvling with gear progression once you get to lvl 55. If you find yourself unable to complete your main regular quests then it may be time for a gear upgrade with either better gear or adding stats to your gear. I have seen a few new players rush their character to mid-lvl through questing and then be unable to complete their 65+ quests.
3. Read the various guides on the forums when you get time but don't over-whelm yourself with too much information at once. There is a lot to learn in RoM but that is what makes it interesting. I especially liked the class guides, pet guides, and housekeeper guides.
4. About diamonds. If you decide to purchase diamonds, I suggest waiting until they go on sale and then purchase items when they go on sale in the item shop. The main thing you will be spending diamonds on or Phirius Tokens on will be Purified Fusion Stones for gear upgrading.
5. Join a helpful guild. There are some good, helpful veterans out there and they can help run you through low or mid lvl dungeons when they have time and may even help you with statting your early pieces. I love my guild and they have been a big help with my character's progression.
6. Go at your own pace and enjoy the game. I also like to read the quests. Some of the lines are quite funny while others are sad and serious.
