DecodePointer could not be located

okay, so i had something happen to my C drive the other day to where my dad had to install a whole new C drive. now, after reinstalling RoM, i keep getting an error when trying to open it. The error says this:

client.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point DecodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNAL32.dll.

What should i do?

Please post your DxDiag. (http://forum.us.runesofmagic.com/showthread.php?t=341)

Did you reinstall Runes of Magic by re-downloading it again or was it just a copy-paste from your previous back-up?

Ok,

OP,

Please post your entire DxDiag but from what you have provided.

You do not have any display drivers.

Please turn auto-update on for Windows and make sure you have the latest drivers.

I would also recommend you get DirectX 9.0c: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

From the looks of it, You don't have service pack 2 installed.

The function DecodePointer doesn't exist on windows computers until Windows XP SP2 or Vista.

Install Servicepack 2 for windows XP and you should be good to go.

I think all of that can be fixed by just turning on Windows Update.

As well as the fact as he has no drivers for his graphics card and is using Direct X 8.1

You just mentioned that in reference to the drivers though - just installing the drivers wouldn't have fixed the problem. Just wanted to be clear he needed SP2. Auto update would install the updates up to the SP's - you still have to specifically agree to installing them.

And really for his display drivers, he should be getting them from the video card manufacturer - I don't trust MS with video card drivers

Either way - install all updates and he should be good to go.

Yes ... that is true.

However,

The OP did not post his entire DxDiag, so it's fair to assume he doesn't fully understand what any of that stuff means.

Windows Update would have installed SP2 before installing any drivers and then would move ahead to installing drivers and would over-all fix all his potential problems.

Not that I wish to argue with either icishoot or mrmisterwaa, but yes, running Windows Update will install all three Service Packs (SP1, SP2, and SP3) for WinXP, all security updates for WinXP to date, and install, at the very least, a workable video drivers for the OP's setup.

Once the workable video drivers are installed, the OP can easily go to either the OEM website (if required) or to the card manufacturer's website and look for the proper latest video drivers he/she needs.

I have never had auto-update automatically install service packs. In fact, for me it has installed updates and drivers before the SP. For the actual SP's, It asks me if I want to install them, it warns me to do back ups - if one doesn't understand that it needs to be installed one may say no, or decide that they want to hold off for a while due to the time it will take (hehehe like I do with all my updates).

I can see a player wanting to get into RoM (or any game for that matter) so fast that he/she will ignore installing lengthy updates thinking that they will just do it later on that night. I do this all the time. On average, I ignore windows up dates for 3-4 weeks before I *finally* get around to letting the updates install - I just don't want take the time.

An option which normally is ok - in this case that wouldn't work as it won't fix the problem

I have just learned over the past 9 years that its best to spell every thing out - I have tried just pointing in the right direction and end up having to just come back and spelling it all out in detail - until one is able to determine how experienced a person is, then you can tailor your responses accordinly.

Yes that is right.

Considering the circumstances that the OP stated that his father "had to install a new C drive", made me move to the conclusion that the OP had very limited understanding about a computer. So in order to ensure he would just direct all this information to his dad, could just fix the problem by pushing 1 button on the Start Menu.
