Lag issues

Hello all. Long time player, but my first post. My wifes laptop died on us and we managed to get a used one from a family member. But it is having huge lag problems with ROM. I am having a problem finding all the stats for it online but I did find one page http://www.meetgadget.com/gadget/11506/HP+Pavilion+dv2000

It is a 64bit system but I have 32bit windows 7 on it. I also know it has 4gigs of ram. I mean everything I see says this should run without a problem. But it lags so bad it is beyond playable. Oh and it has a fresh format and install of windows 7 and the only things installed are opera, windows updates and ROM.

Any tips or ideas would be wonderful. I really want my wife to be able to pay again, she has gone without for about a month. Almost forgot, this lag even occurs with all visual options turned all the way down to zero.

They're going to tell you that the graphics card is the issue, but Nvidia just released a driver update for their 6000 line (as well as most of the other ones).

I just did a full reinstall of the game, and when that didn't fix it, the first thing I did was check the computer's drivers to make sure they were all up to date. Windows told me Nvidia was- and two seconds later, I got a notification on the taskbar that a new update was available. The update window has some beautiful renderings of Skyrim. Bill Gates, I have never hated you more...

Anywho! There's a chance that the graphic drivers aren't up to date, which may be causing some of your lag. Try updating the driver. You can also try Leatrix' Lag Reducer- it increases the response time on the packets of your computer to Rom's servers. It helped a lot with the issues I was having as well as reducing a lot of the memory leakage. You can find the reducer and an explanation of what it does here:

Thank you for the reply. I am working on updating my video card driver now but every time I try it says "The handle is invalid" and will not install.

Still working on it. But thought I would post about it incase anyone has any tips.

I could not figure out from link, how much memory that video card has, and is it shared or not?

Post a dxdiag so we can take a closer look at the hardware/driver setup for your notebook. Use the link in my sig below if you're not sure how to do a dxdiag and post it.

However, LadyMacV is prescient. The GPU/chipset in that notebook is going to be on the rather ragged lower boundary for playing RoM, even if it has 128MB of dedicated video RAM included. Your framerates, even at the lowest in-game video settings, are going to be low. If it has less than 128MB of video RAM, your video lag is going to be stultifying.

You have to understand that the HP dv2700 series notebooks aren't gaming computers. They're "entertainment" computers, which means they're okay for streaming video, surfing the net, music playback, and light movie (DVD) viewing. Yours, in particular, has minimal gaming performance. Think Facebook games, at the most.

As I said above, you're going to have serious video lag performance issues--low framerates. If you're stuck with using this machine, I'd suggest using the Slim client and, once the game is patched up, go into the in-game video settings and set everything to pretty much the lowest levels, and shut off all of the special effects (Bloom, Water Reflection, Water Refraction, stuff like that.) Do turn on Hide effects from other players--that will help a bit.

I could have swore that I read somewhere it had better video ram then that. Guess I missed something. Thank you for reply. Plus I love the Adam Savage quote!

Windows 7 will use some of your system RAM to bolster the lack of video RAM, but that's not going to be a lot of help. In fact, it may slow your overall system response somewhat. Since SDRAM is cheaper than VRAM, that's one of the ways that OEMs do their cheeseparing to cut hardware costs and boost their already slim profits on value-rated computers such as yours.

Actually, that's exactly the problem...transferring texture data from RAM to the card when it's needed (and where it should be stored) is INCREDIBLY slow.
