Screenshot Viewing error

How do I fix how screenshots are taken? Ever since the 4.0.6.2483 patch, RoM can still take screenshots but I can no longer view that ones taken after that that patch. I deleted the whole game twice, reinstalled the 4.0.5.2467 installation files & patched to the current version & still can no longer have viewable screenshots. They're all still saved in .bmp format, but Windows Photo Gallery says they're not .bmp format & are not viewable because I don't have the newest updates (lol my Windows is up to date as well as the Gallery). Only way I can view the new screenies is thru Paint. Windows Photo Gallery says "Photo gallery can't open this picture or video. This file format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery."

My old super bugged client that I patched to the current version from 2.0.1.1821 can take viewable screenies. I'm thinking about mix matching all the .fdb files from both versions... lol which .fdb file is the one that deals with screenshots if there's not a fixable way for this?

The only difference I notice between the screenies taken from the new client & the older client is that the screenshot size for the new client are smaller than the older client when it's viewed in Paint & the file size of the screenshot themselves.

I'm not certain what's going on with your setup, but I just took a screenshot and was able to open and view it in Windows Live Photo Gallery. The screenshot format hasn't changed--they're still saved as .bmp files.

So what do you suggest I do??? Like I said before, yes the the files are being saved as .bmp but somehow the .bmp file itself is corrupted during the saving process I think to the point that Windows Photo Gallery doesn't recognize it as .bmp since the file is a couple of bytes smaller than my viewable screenshots taken before the patch.
What file is used in how screenshots are created/saved since I don't think it is one of the .fdb files?? I really don't wanna keep using my bugged older client that I patched up from Ch2 til now... think I'm gonna use the older client's version of whatever file it is & replace the newer client's version of it.

OP,

From what I can tell ... it looks like you have malware/spyware on your computer.

There should be no reason to why Windows Photo Viewer (or whatever it's called) can not view a .bmp image.

The only thing that comes to mind is that in your PC changed the default settings and make it so .bmp extension doesn't exist or it disabled what Windows Photo Gallery can view. (which in both cases in either malware/spyware or a very very bad photo viewer you might have forgotten.)

So to be safe, scan your PC with Spybot Search & Destroy + Microsoft Security Essentials.

If it doesn't fix the problem, try using a photo viewer like: Nexus Image (you might better ones but personally this is the best one I have used.)

I never encounter any issues with the latest up to date version of Windows.

If you are, you either need to update your rig and to ensure you maintain your computer properly.

It is just like a car, if you do not look after it, it just gets worse.

That might be the reason in other situations, but that makes no sense because for mine: ALL the screenshots taken before the last 4.0.6.2483 patch using 4.0.5.2467-patched-to-current-version-client are viewable with Windows Photo Gallery with no errors at all. What u r saying would/might be what's causing the problem if none of my screenshots were ever viewable.

Meanwhile, my super buggy & crashy 2.0.1.1821-patch-to-current-version-client has no problems with the screenshots taken with it, they're all viewable with no problems at all pre- & post-4.0.6.2483 patch.

I wonder if I should run the fdb extractor or whatever that program is but I'm not very tech-savvy at all to do like a mix+match of files of both clients to have a better rom client to use lol. But something tells me it's not really a fdb problem... I did copy the GameSettings.ini file over that didn't fix the problem either so it's not related to that when it comes to screenshots.

Anyone still has any other suggestions? I reinstalled the game on my laptop recently, deleted everything, & with this new Chapter 5.0.0.2535 patched client, it still takes unviewable screenshots with Windows Photo Gallery. I can view all my .bmp files in WPG except my rom screenshots, which is still only viewable thru Paint. The extensions all say that .bmp but for whatever reason it will not open.

Meanwhile my super old & crashy [COLOR=white !important]Chapter 2.0.1.1821 patched client can create viewable screenshots. I have no idea what's going on or what file in the rom folder is causing this problem. The only thing so far that I can find that is different between my 2 clients is the RuneDev file, no matter how many times I change the contents of the Ch 5 version to match my Ch 2 version, like 2 mins later I notice it has reverted back to the original ch 5 settings, no idea if the contents of it is what tells it what to do when creating screenshots when you hit Prt Sc on the keyboard. I have this same problem. All screenshots after a certain point are unreadable by windows photo gallery, or paint, etc. Just says the file is unreadable/corrupted. Hence why all my screenshots are just pasted onto print via ctrl+v after print screen, and saved from there. Last viewable screenshot was back in the lvl 70 cap, about 4-6 months ago.

I just took a screenie and was able to view it in:

MS Office Picture Manager
Opera browser
Windows Live Photo Gallery
Windows Paint
Windows Photo Viewer
Directory Opus 10 Image Viewer

Naturally, I have the current game client version installed. The client is in windowed mode--1600 x 900.

There were some artifacts in the image, but they didn't detract materially from it.

I cannot state that your issues aren't due to client errors. On the other hand, I cannot state that your issues aren't related to problems with your Windows installations. There are simply too many possible variables--applications installed, running applications (background), processes, .dll files, and so on--that may affect how your screenshots are being saved.

Which display mode are you using with the game client--full screen or windowed, and have you tried using an external image file conversion application to see if you can convert one or more of the corrupted .bmp files to another format, such as .jpg or .gif, and if it will display properly in the new format?

Ya, I unfortunately have not been able to view any screenshots on my laptop since the patch that occurred right before Christmas 2011, so about 10 months now. Reinstalled with new Ch 5 client didn't fix the problem. Meanwhile my PC has no problems with creating screenshots whatsoever, but since it's an older client, Ch 2 that's been patched up til now, it's extremely crashy.

I play in windowed mode for both my laptop & pc.
I can open the screenshots in:
Firefox browser
Windows Paint
Quicktime PictureViewer
Opera browser

pretty much everything except Windows Photo Gallery. Everything recognizes it is a .bmp that's openable except WPG says it's .bmp too but refuses to open it, giving that error. It's convertable because it's not corrupted.

There was huge upset in WoW regarding Blizzard putting everyone's IP and account info into screenshots. Wonder if RW is doing the same with our screenshots. Mr. Kalvan might know better if we have been tracked by Big Brother... :)

It seems, then, that your issue is with WPG and not with the screenshots themselves. The files themselves aren't necessarily causing the problem you've been having. With your current WPG installation, is it able to display other .bmp files?

Now, note what I added to your quote. I do not use or have QuickTime or any Apple software for Windows installed since, in my opinion, Apple doesn't have the capacity to write good software for Windows--note the security issues that QT and iTunes for Windows have both had over the years. You might consider trying to uninstall the QT Picture Viewer applet and see if WPG is able to display your screenshots. But, I don't know if it's possible to remove a single or specific element from a QuickTime installation.

To the best of my knowledge, there's nothing in RoM screenshots that tags them to specific users. However, I am not a programmer and wouldn't have the faintest idea on how to inspect a .bmp file or where to look in it for IP or account information that might be in it.

Hmmm but on my end it seems that RoM is creating unreadable screenshots for some reason on my laptop, no idea. WPG can view allllllllllllllllllllll other .bmp files except for RoM's .bmp screenshots. I do always turn my antivirus & firewall off when I'm patching so it can't be a write error. File sizes in the fdb folder are the same sizes too.

Yes I know of the whole Apple vs. Windows software errors. I don't think it's possible to remove a specific element either =(

I got iTunes & Windows Media Player on this laptop, unfortunately if I have iTunes installed, half of my mp3s refuse to play in WMP even when I have WMP defaulted for every music type, it still says almost half of them are corrupted files/don't have the right codex to play. As soon as I uninstall iTunes, my WMP will function normally & will play all my music again. LOL ugh! All I can use iTunes for is to download music & shows & movies & books & games, but I can't play any music in it because it is always stuck at 0:00 mins regardless of how many times i hit play. Videos can be played in Itunes but there's no sound. Quicktime can play music but again, no sound....blah.... just like the rom screenshot issue: reinstalling iTunes multiple times still doesn't work to fix the problem =(

It seems to me, then, that your issues may be centered around iTunes.

If you're not absolutely wedded to iTunes--there are iDevice-friendly alternatives to it, or so I've been told--I'd recommend removing it and see if RoM screenshots can be made and viewed in WPG. Don't do the experiment with older or existing screenshots, take new ones. You may also have to once again reinstall RoM before doing the tests, but reinstall after you've removed iTunes.

And no, I don't know or know of anyone having the same issue(s) with iTunes and RoM.

It's not an iTunes problem (wish it was though/that easy!).
I didn't update or anything with iTunes/Apple applications around the time I started having this problem screenshot problem on my laptop or else revert to last restore point would've fixed the problem.
Plus my PC has both WMP & iTunes on it & has no problems with creating & viewing RoM screenshots.
The only thing that is physically different between the old viewable & new unviewable screenshots regarding Properties-wise on my laptop is that the old viewable screenies are 1,876 KB meanwhile the new unviewable screenies are somewhere around 963 KB.... if I could change the size of the screenshots it creates, maybe it would fix this problem, but I don't know how to do that.

Your screenie file sizes are odd--to me, that is--since all of mine are consistently 5.49MB. Megabytes, not Kilobytes. And I have no explanation for the difference. I will say that my windowed mode resolution is 1600x900, which may be an indicator (I have a 23" monitor.)

I'm sorry, but I just don't have any other ideas or suggestions to make.
