Black load screen and serious lag. Help!

The game ran fine for me, right up until two nights ago. I'm not sure what went wrong, but I did a full reinstall of the game- and it didn't fix the issues I've been having.

I get a frequent "Runes of Magic Has Stopped Working" message, black load screens, and a TON of lag where there was very little before and the game loaded much faster. I'm posting my dxdiag in an attempt to fix the issue, whatever might be causing it.

I'm almost 99% certain the issues I"m experiencing under the new download client aren't because of my computer.

My computer, for some reason, seems to run the game better on the higher graphics settings (as opposed to those on the lower end). Once I switched to those, my lag decreased by a lot... not all the way, enough to be noticeable but not negatable. That wasn't the only problem.

All of my chat windows are popping up via a whisper window while running the client with no add-ons of any kind. Support told me this was most likely due to corrupted data files in the game itself, so I should reinstall to get rid of the corruption. After reinstallation, I still have the same problem. Also, when I attempted to enter ZS, even though I am attuned on my character- the instance simply ported me directly back to the respawn point. No death debt, so I wasn't killed via lag.

I am getting very, very frustrated.

This may be part of your problem:

Memory: 1022MB RAM
Page File: 2367MB used, 473MB available

You have very little system RAM showing up. If you're supposed to have more than 1GB, then at least one of your RAM modules is bad. If you're supposed to have only 1GB, part of the set that's installed may be bad--1GB=1024MB, and your dxdiag is only showing 1022MB.

Also, the dxdiag is showing more than 2GB of paging file used, with 473MB available, on a HDD with more than 270GB available. I'm not sure what's causing that--Vista should dynamically adjust your paging file as needed, unless you've disabled that and have manually set a limit on the size of the paging file.

Since you've already reinstalled the game, you can try navigating to your RoM data folder and moving it to a safe place. It can be found in C:\Users\Documents. Move it elsewhere, then restart the game. The server will rebuild the RoM data folder. This may or may not improve things--no guarantees.

Thank you so much for responding, Kalvan.

Well, the RAM going bad would explain why the game isn't running the way it used to. I didn't even think to look at it because the system properties was telling me I still had almost all of the 1GB available. I'll try moving the folder, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the RAM it has is going to need an upgrade. I'll let you know if either of those things fixes the issues I was having.

After moving the memory card (1GB) from one slot to another, and including a second memory card to test both slots, I've finally found the source of my problem.

My CPU is not providing enough power to the system in order to be able to utilize the full capacity of the memory stick. The cooling fan quit working and overheated things inside the tower, causing the cpu to stop functioning correctly. -.-' I need a new processor. Thankfully, the motherboard still appears to be functional.

Looks like I'm limited to playing on the laptop until I can pick up the one I want. Thanks, Kalvan!

You do have a rather older computer there. The CPU doesn't provide the power, the PSU--power supply unit--does.

At this stage, I don't know if it would be cost-effective for you to significantly upgrade your existing machine with a newer, more capable PSU, CPU, and add more system RAM. The spec sheet for your computer shows that it can handle a maximum of 4GB (2x2GB--667MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM). All should be easily available at an online seller such as NewEgg or TigerDirect. If you go this route, you will almost certainly have to reinstall Windows, so I hope you have installation DVDs. You might be able to use the restoration files on your D:/ drive for this.

Your video card is certainly up to snuff for displaying RoM's graphics--and may be the reason why your PSU is weaker than it should be.

Ultimately, the decision is yours.

It depends on where and who you buy your hardware from, but yes, I am looking at buying a new computer within the next year or two regardless of whether or not I upgrade things. Newegg is good for a lot of things. The biggest upgrade I could do to the CPU is a jump from 2 ghz to 3 ghz on a dual-core- makes little sense with quad cores out there that can utilize Thread Building Technology and run more than two applications simultaneously. Although the E8400 Intel duo core (highest compatible upgrade for my motherboard) was comparable with a lot of the top of the line processors until around 3 months ago.

I'll test the power supply cord and the PSU to make sure they're both still ok, but honestly, I think the fact that the cooling system quit was the cause of things.

I'll be keeping the graphics card from this computer, as it should hold out for a while on this game and the newer ones (like Skyrim, Witcher 3 (when it's released), Diablo 3 (still in Beta), etc. I will probably take the time to build my own rig so that it lasts a while next time, instead of a pre-build from a box store. I may POSSIBLY go Alienware if they manage to include more memory slots. Dell tends to cut corners where the slots are concerned.

Anyway, thread resolved.

Forget Alienware. You are only paying for the logo, not for the parts.

You can get all these parts for much cheaper:

You can build a god-like computer from websites like this: http://pc.ncix.com/pcbuilder/

They ship you the parts to build yourself or you can pay them a bit extra to let them assemble it for you.

If you want a good cheap processor then you go with an i5, if you want more power then you go for an i7.

But an i5 can play pretty much every single game (Sandy Bridge) for the next 2 - 3 years.

Grab a 560ti GFX card and you are done for pretty much current and next generation games.

You can even SLI-560ti's if you want even more power.
