Problems with FPS

Hello people i went to this forum becouse i have problems with my fps.
I have between 5 and 10fps almost all time, but sometimes it up to 20 or 25fps for a few second and then it down again. Even my fps down to 1 or less sometimes. The problem is the same with my graphics in max and in min.
I tried updating my drivers, using the game booster, setting my graphics from my video card, closing processes, changing my resolution and the problem is the same. The problem is the same in places with a lot of people and things and in places where i am alone without nothing.
I played Need for Speed Pro Street with this notebook with the graphics in medium and the game works perfect. I don't know why it happen with RoM.

Details of my notebook:
Aser Aspire 5532
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 TF-36 2.0GHz
RAM: 2GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD3200 896Mb
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bits

I use the Slim version and i have enough space to the game.
I hope answers and thanks!

While a full dxdiag will be helpful (thanks, mrmisterwaa!), I can give you a few bits of info.

Firstly, the game engine tends to sort of "balance" the stress on both the CPU and GPU. This was intended so that older, less-capable machines with lesser graphics hardware could run the game in a reasonable fashion. In your case, your CPU is holding you back somewhat. It's right at the lower edge of our hardware requirements.

Secondly, your graphics hardware (GPU) is hardly a video powerhouse. It's above our minimums and recommended hardware, but is one of the lower-performing versions of the Radeon HD series GPUs. Since you're using a laptop, you can't upgrade your GPU.

What you can do is make sure your graphics driver is up to date. You can do this through Windows Update and allow it to find the latest available graphics driver. You can also go to the Acer website and search their downloads area for your specific computer model. Or, you can go to the AMD/ATI website and find the latest driver for your GPU and operating system.

In-game, open up the Video & Audio Settings tab and do the following:

Character Detail: No higher than halfway, less is better
View Distance: No higher than 1/3 from left (Low)
World Detail: No higher than halfway, less is better
Sky Detail: No higher than halfway
Texture Detail: 1/3 to 1/2
Terrain Detail: 1/3 to 1/2

Uncheck all of the Special Effects boxes, except for Automatic Detail Adjustment and Hide the effects of other players

Also, due to your CPU, have as few background programs running as possible during actual game play. Check the number of startup programs which load at system start and remove or disable ones which you really don't need. Doing this will free up processor cycles that the game can use.

Hope these suggestions help.

Just to add, in the past I've ran and played RoM on a similar system (Athlon x2 5600+, 2GB Ram, HD3200 512MB Shared, XP w/SP3) and managed a steady 20fps in most scenario's. In game settings were set to minimum (sliders all the way to the left) except for view distance which I had set half way and Automatic Detail Adjustment and Hide the effects of other players ticked.

Whilst your CPU appears to be the weak link it is still above the minimum requirements, and for relative performance comparison would be along the lines of a Pentium IV 3.2GHz / Athlon 3200+.

One thing I would suggest, is if (as I suspect) your on board video is using shared system ram to reduce this as 896MB is a lot taken up from your 2GB total. To do this press F2 (or as otherwise indicated onscreen) when starting up your system to enter your Bios. From here go to the "Main" tab and highlight/select the Video Memory setting. If I'm correct this should say "896MB". Hit enter and change this to no more than 512MB. Pressing F10 should save and exit the Bios.

Disclaimer - Some aspects/references may differ on your precise hardware plus any changes you choose to make to your hardware settings are exactly that, your choice.

The reason I suggest doing this is as you are running Win7 you ideally need more along the lines of 1.5GB to see a more balanced performance across the hardware you're running. I hope; a) The suggestion given is possible, and b) Helps with your RoM performance...

Thanks for replying. I updated my video card, i played with the graphics in minumum and i closed unnecessary processes but the problem is still the same. I went to my BIOS to change the video card memory but the option appear in gray and i can't change it. Also appear 253Mb, not 896Mb.

If the driver details in your above DXDiag are what you are using atm, then they aren't current.

Either use the link in my previous post, or instead you can go to AMD Driver Autodetect and download an update tool that makes it a lot easier.

I updated my graphic card again but the problem persists. Is probable that the game has problems with notebooks? becouse i have a computer that is older and very lower and the game works better.
Thanks for the answers and i hope more solutions.

Luchw, you have a slight misunderstanding of how much video RAM your notebook has. This is what you're seeing in your dxdiag:

Display Memory: 891 MB
Dedicated Memory: 253 MB
Shared Memory: 638 MB

What you have, built-in, is 256MB of dedicated video RAM. You cannot change this. Windows 7 will borrow some of your system RAM (2048MB, or 2GB) to boost video performance as needed, at a cost to the number of processor cycles that your CPU has. This can affect how fast your notebook runs (processes) the game, so turning your in-game video settings down somewhat will improve both video and game performance.

It's possible that Windows Update will not be able to find update graphics drivers for your computer. Some OEMs use customized GPUs and chipsets, and ask the vendor (in this case, ATI) to provide drivers for their customized chipsets. You may have to go to the Acer website, look for driver downloads for your specific notebook model, and download a newer video driver, if one is available. You're certainly welcome to go to the AMD/ATI website (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx), and see if the appropriate Radeon HD3200 driver for your OS (Windows 7 64-bit) can be downloaded to and installed on your notebook.

I updated my graphic driver again, but there aren't improvements. I already did it 3 times, then i guess that it's not a driver problem. I read in forum that i'm not the only that have the same problem, then can be it a incompatible client problem with some PCs or notebooks?, becouse i don't know what more try.

I think your problem is your memory and video card.

I know that i haven't a "Gammer PC", but my notebook has the enough requirements. The strangest is that the game works the same way with the minumum graphics that with the maximum, then i guess that it's not a problem of my video card.
Also i have a computer with 1Gb RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE with 512Mb as video card and the game works better with medium graphics.

Here are four things that are going against you:

1. AMD TF-36 processor @ ~2.0Ghz. This is at the bottom of our minimm system requirements

2. 2048MB (2GB) system RAM. This is the minimum amount of system RAM recommended for Windows 7.

3. ATI Radeon HD 3200 GPU w/256MB video RAM. This is a lower-performance GPU that's not well-suited for gaming.

4. Western Digital WD1600BEVT-00A23T0 5400 RPM hard drive. Slower platter speeds will result in slower data loading.

Of these four things, the only one you can easily do anything about is #2--you can bump your system RAM to a maximum of 4GB.

You can also do the following:

1. Reduce your in-game video settings. This includes disabling (unchecking) all of the special effects boxes except for Hide the effects of other players--that one may actually improve your FPS.

2. Use a wired connection from your modem/router/residential gateway to your notebook, if you're currently using a wireless connection.

They can point you in a thousand different directions. i used to play on wired connection, full desktop. lag and dc all the time. when chap 4 came out i loaded slim client onto a 400 dollar laptop, using a wirless conection. i never hardly every dc in game or in siege. even since they moved the servers, i havent had any dc issues , just some heavy lag occasionally. seems they refuse to admit the game has a serious problem. even when other posts contradict that fact. they moved the servers somewhere other side of the country. whatever performance you were getting before, say goodbye to it, it will likely never return. as far as turning graphics down, yea, that helps, some. but regardless of wich computer i was using, with wired or wireless, slim or full, i have always had to run minimum graphic settings. i can turn them up a lil and that will run ok for about an hour and then it just cant handle it.

they will blame your computer till the end of days. if your system meets minimum requirements, you should be able to run it. if the minimum is not enough, then they should change the info to higher requirements so people dont get their hopes up thinking they can play this game with no issues.

but on a side not, i know guildies with top of the line gaming systems. brand new alienware rigs fully set up for extreme gaming, that have the same exact problems in this game, with fps drops and lag. so blame it on players computers all they want, its not always the case.

keep looking through your system there may indeed be something you can do up game performance. but probably not much. good luck, oh , and search for mal's tech tips. useful info.

I tried with wired connection and is the same. There aren't improvements with all i tried. The problem is only with this game, becouse i played games with better graphic quality and i never have problems. Also i played other MMORPG with very similar graphics and i neither have problems. The game works EXACTLY in the same way with high graphics than with low. The game works always between 1 and 10fps. Sometimes it up between 25 and 35fps and in about 5 second it down again. It happen REGARDLESS if i play with high or low graphics, the problem is always the same. Then i think that it's not a problem of my notebook and i agree with trav. If this is so i hope you can fix it.

Thanks to all.

As much as you would like it to be true.

The fact that I play on the US-server with 250 ping with NO lag spikes contridicts your point about "it's always them and not us".

A majority of the time, the players who post in the technical support thread, do not meet the minimum requirements to run the game.

A lot of the people who post don't even have a dedicated graphics card.

Another thing for you to remember is that I am not Frogster or Runewaker, I am only a player who tries to provide support for people.

The reason why every single gaming company provides Minimum Requirements is that the game can run with those specifications but badly. Recommended is what you should be aiming to maximise the amount of enjoyment in the game.

IIRC, his ping improved with servers being moved east.

As for FPS, last night I had ping go very low, 1-2 FPS for a first time in Varanas. Someone else in guild reported that bridge was missing on his client. Something strange was happening, and my client did crash at least once.

I'm on Reni server, wonder if its server problem.

mrmisterwaa, can you explain why i played games that ask more requirements without problems? (for example Need for speed Pro street and Sims 3). Also trav said that guilidies with awesome computers have the same problem. Moreover, can you explain why my game works exactly in the same way with high that with low graphics? i think that if this were a problem of my notebook, the game should works better with low graphics and this is not so. My notebook has the enough requeriments to play RoM well at least with low graphics.
Sometimes i have lagg problems too, but only sometimes. The FPS problem is always, sometimes to a greater extent and sometimes to a lesser extent. Greater: between 0 and 5fps Lesser: between 5 and 10fps.
