This is a fairly rare issue, but it's possible that your client.config.ini file has been tagged by Windows as "read only". There are two solutions you can try.

Note: The client.config.ini file is usually located in C:\Program Files(x86)\Runes of Magic, for 64-bit Windows installations, and can be opened and edited in Notepad. For 32-bit Windows, the file is located in C:\Program Files\Runes of Magic.

1.) Open Explorer and navigate to the folder mentioned above. Find client.config.ini and right-click on it amd select Properties from the context menu. In the lower section of the General tab, find Attributes and make sure that Read-only is unchecked. If it is checked, uncheck it and click Apply. The file should now be write-enabled.

2.) You can manually edit the file. Navigate to the folder mentioned above, find the file, and double click it to open it in Notepad. The top portion of the file should look like this:

[display]
windowed width=1600
windowed height=900
fullscreen width=1920
fullscreen height=1080
windowed mode=1
quality=0

Change the fullscreen width value in your file to 1600. Change the fullscreen height value to 900. Windowed width and height values must be smaller than those for fullscreen. Make sure or change the windowed mode value to 0. Ignore the quality value. CTRL-S to save the file. Close the file, then re-open it to see if it saved the changes correctly. If it didn't, you'll have to go through solution #1 above.

The other sections in the file have to do with video and sound, and should be adjusted either at the client launcher window or while you're in-game.

Hope this helps.

Another thing many are not aware, moving game folder (place where you installed the game) from Program Files folder will allow the game to save settings on exit. Same will happen if you start game as admin.

ROM tries to write to 'protected' folders and that is why those settings don't save for you.

I didn't provide the other settings I have in my client.config.ini file since many of the values are decimal point variables, and in my case they aren't usually set to max. I have a good video card but settings things like View Distance and Character Detail to max tends to decrease framerates. However, after temporarily changing everything to max, these are the settings under Visual Detail in that file:

[visual detail]
view distance=3500.000000
camera distance=120.282951
terrain detail class=3
sky detail=1
texture detail=4
debase texture=0
splat detail=3
terrain shader detail=2
rtlightmap enable=0
rtlightmap size=128
shadow detail=3

I don't know precisely what "splat detail" is. I'm going to presume that "rtlightmap" refers to the minimap in the upper rightr corner of the display window. I'm not sure that you need to edit "Camera Distance", as that may actually be dynamically set by the game.

These are my normal settings for Visual Effects:

[visual effects]
bloom=0
water reflection=0
water refraction=0
distort fx=0
specular highlight=0

All those are deselected--turned off--so framerates don't degrade. I do have "Hide the effects of other players" checked, but that value is obviously not shown in the .ini file.

Hope this helps.
