I'm on a 7 year old pc [...] rarely ever crash
That's one of the patterns - ppl with older systems seem to crash less. (Probably a newer system reports more free resources to RoM so RoM tries to use it all up and happlily crashes? Whatever, it does seem to be the pattern.)
But: I have never had a mouse locking problem during a crash: anyone else has seen this?
To Alieon:
* if your mouse gets locked: maybe you can still press Ctrl+Alt+Delete: you should get a process manager, maybe you can find there a RoM's Client.exe process and forced-close it? Might be simpler/faster than rebooting.
Anyway, if you search for "crash*" on the forum you will find older threads with some hints. In short:
* you really need one of the mem cleaners (or better: test various cleaners and see which one works best for you; you need to set it to quite aggressive settings [say, clean every 2 minutes; you can limit it to the rom client though]; you still need to run a manual clean after e.g. every two snoop jumps;
* you probably also will want the view distance to (almost) minimum; other graphics settings seem to influence crashes much less;
Basically:
* with minimum graphics and a mem cleaner you might run basically without a crash (although it seems different for different ppl; and the graphics is *ugly*...);
* everything else is a trade-off of how many crashes you think are acceptable: good (even max) other settings but keeping view distance really low worked best for me (and yes, I do crash, but rarely enough to make it bearable);
To the team/GF:
Alieon is an old player, he will probably make the effort to get a mem cleaner, and might stick around despite the crashes. Still, look how disappointing it is!
But if a new player has a good computer, she might start immediately on the top settings and without a mem cleaner: she will get guaranteed crashes every 10-15 minutes. No way she will keep playing - after two hours she will simply uninstall RoM...
Imho, fixing crashes _has_to_ get some prio even if it costed GF considerable amount of money! RoM can attract new players but the crashes is the one most repellent "feature" of rom, really discouraging new players.
PS: "most repellent "feature" of rom, really discouraging new players"
Off top, but: the close second is probably how long it takes to download the client - I wonder if you guys have any statistics about how many new ppl started downloading the client (I bet there are still quite a lot) and ... how many have actually finished downloading the last bit (I bet _very_ few). Really, there should be standard torrents everywhere with RoM binary (containing the newest patches already) with links on the official page; or the download should be spread-out (cloud or something).
A new player should get the installer really fast (if she saturates her good internet connection)... Any chance for this?
