Crashes

there seems to be many kinds of rom crashes , the one that annoys me the most is when it locks my Alienware laptop so I cant use my mouse, when is tech support going to stop all these crashes they take a lot of the enjoyment of playing away. my laptop is a really good one compared to my old pc but it crashes just the same and does it way too much. I get a message about my memory exceeding a safe limit when I have 8gigs of ram I should have plenty of memory. please help solve this problem.

Thank You

Alieon :wacko:

Hey Al.. Welcome to the Crashes-R-Us club. Seems to have gotten worse the past 2 weeks though on our server. I would love for them to fix the issue though it does ruin the game and drives newbies away in droves. But i see lots of complaints about this issue but no comments from higher-ups. they must think if they don't talk about it, it doesn't exist.

Hey al, there's a few things you can do to reduce the number of crashes that you might want to take a look at;
1) Lower your view distance
2) Lower your screen resolution (not game resolution)
3) Make sure all drivers are up to date, especially video card drivers
4) Run advanced system care to take care of all disk errors, malware, junk files, etc...

I check these and I'm on a 7 year old pc with 4 gigs ram and 512 mb vid card. rarely ever crash :)

I'm on a 7 year old pc [...] rarely ever crash
That's one of the patterns - ppl with older systems seem to crash less. (Probably a newer system reports more free resources to RoM so RoM tries to use it all up and happlily crashes? Whatever, it does seem to be the pattern.)

But: I have never had a mouse locking problem during a crash: anyone else has seen this?

To Alieon:
* if your mouse gets locked: maybe you can still press Ctrl+Alt+Delete: you should get a process manager, maybe you can find there a RoM's Client.exe process and forced-close it? Might be simpler/faster than rebooting.

Anyway, if you search for "crash*" on the forum you will find older threads with some hints. In short:
* you really need one of the mem cleaners (or better: test various cleaners and see which one works best for you; you need to set it to quite aggressive settings [say, clean every 2 minutes; you can limit it to the rom client though]; you still need to run a manual clean after e.g. every two snoop jumps;
* you probably also will want the view distance to (almost) minimum; other graphics settings seem to influence crashes much less;

Basically:
* with minimum graphics and a mem cleaner you might run basically without a crash (although it seems different for different ppl; and the graphics is *ugly*...);
* everything else is a trade-off of how many crashes you think are acceptable: good (even max) other settings but keeping view distance really low worked best for me (and yes, I do crash, but rarely enough to make it bearable);

To the team/GF:
Alieon is an old player, he will probably make the effort to get a mem cleaner, and might stick around despite the crashes. Still, look how disappointing it is!

But if a new player has a good computer, she might start immediately on the top settings and without a mem cleaner: she will get guaranteed crashes every 10-15 minutes. No way she will keep playing - after two hours she will simply uninstall RoM...

Imho, fixing crashes _has_to_ get some prio even if it costed GF considerable amount of money! RoM can attract new players but the crashes is the one most repellent "feature" of rom, really discouraging new players.

PS: "most repellent "feature" of rom, really discouraging new players"
Off top, but: the close second is probably how long it takes to download the client - I wonder if you guys have any statistics about how many new ppl started downloading the client (I bet there are still quite a lot) and ... how many have actually finished downloading the last bit (I bet _very_ few). Really, there should be standard torrents everywhere with RoM binary (containing the newest patches already) with links on the official page; or the download should be spread-out (cloud or something).

A new player should get the installer really fast (if she saturates her good internet connection)... Any chance for this?

I am on new(er) PC that should not even run the game (Laptop / CAD Workstation - video card that does not support many video games) and still I had 3 crashes in past 6 months. (if not even longer then that)

It is rare that my client will crash, and I do port all around the game. For example last night I was everywhere, from Logar, Varenas, Dalanis all the way to TB, AKOR, Chrystalia and CoO in the end.

Also on my alts I don't close client, I just keep it running, and sign with different characters.

Bl**dy lucky b*st*rd! :D Good to know some ppl don't have such problems. ;( I knew life was not fair. I knew this. Just not fair...

Actually, Alieon: does you keyboard work? If so, maybe you can Alt+Tab,Tab,Tab to get to your desktop? Then your mouse should work. If so, you should see RoM on the task bar, you should be able to right-click on it and close it. Again - just a workaround but probably even simpler than the task manager option.

Well, all you need is lower graphical settings, disable effects of other players and most importantly, keep a good care of your PC. Last thing includes regular defrags of HD (Suggest use of Defraggler), clean temp files etc (CCleaner), as well install memory cleaner and use it while playing {CleanMem).

This little utility keeps a RoM in good shape.

Also it does help if you use GameBooster - it shuts down all junk that regularly runs on your computer.

CleanMem - http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem

GameBooster - http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

CCleaner - https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Defraggler - https://www.piriform.com/defraggler

If you stilll have issues - download latest game from here, and manual patches from here and try it. (you might have bad install)

ps. Almost forgot, don't set view distance too far, it will try to load too much $h1t.
