Randomly getting logged off

Update - Nov 30, 2014
I exchanged email with a person at gtt.com and they provided the contact info for their Network Operations Center (NOC)

I have written to them and sent info about my connection problems. Maybe others could do the same and this might get fixed...

To contact gtt.com:
[font='&quot'] You can email them at
inoc@gtt.net or you can call them at

For destination ROM IP:
206.253.173.50

It would be useful for other folks posting in this thread to list their results in the same way.

206.253.173.50 this goes in the "Host" entry space.

Something like that, but it seems you didn't successfully connect to the destination IP at all. Those numbers in the first column indicate % packet loss. Try again and see if you get a different answer. If it looks the same just say so, no need to paste it.

Looks like this user sees the same issue. Something is going on with the network communication after hop ae4-69.atl11.ip4.gtt.net where packets are being lost.

It seems that you let it run for about 20 seconds, while Modrune's ran for about 200 to let the packet loss become more obvious over time.

Well, at least we're not alone. Seems other GF games are having the same connection issues.

I have been seeing this same thing for a week or two now. The packet loss at the gtt.net nodes correlates highly to when my client lags out.

As much as I hate to agree with anything Zid says, I too have seen cases where only a single client loses connection, where other clients on the same machine stay connected just fine.

yes, thank you. Sleze's also includes these gtt nodes that seem to be causing difficulties for people. It might be useful to compare to a 'healthy' route (and see if those generally lack the gtt in their path).

Has this even been reported up the chain as an issue yet? Any GF techs actually working on it? I see a GM response in the forums but is that even something GMs are tasked to do?

A few folks running traces is a fine use of time I suppose, but it's not like not like the average user is going to (able to) can change DNS routing on their own to avoid a specific hub to the game server or anything. So while knowing that certain areas are dropping packets is great and all, maybe this is one where we just pass it on to the techs and let them work their magic, maybe ask us of the information if they need it?

If this is coming off as a bit harsh well, it's very frustrating to constantly disconnect like this. It's not an isolated occurrence, it's happening to people from different locations and it's pretty much randomly affecting quite a few people. Maybe when we are all sufficiently frustrated we'll stop bothering with a game that we can't stay connected to.

dito.. any news about the techs getting msgs? :)

2nd.. it 'seems' to be a problem between my computer and the server.. because when I get DC'd, and relog fast, i hang at the login screen waiting for the server to 'purge' my character.. If I wait 30-45 seconds before retrying, I get back on right away.. it's just when I try to log RIGHT back in fast, it takes awhile..

So.. might not be server side, which sucks, because sorting out ISP stuff is a nightmare! lol

According to whois, the ae4-69.atl11.ip4.gtt.net location is in New York and the xe-8-1-7.mia12.ip4.gtt.net connection is in Germany.

Someone should check with the German owner first since the packet loss is occurring there.

Not quite sure where you're seeing that data, considering:

jguy@neptune ~> whois xe-8-1-7.mia12.ip4.gtt.net
No match for "XE-8-1-7.MIA12.IP4.GTT.NET".
>>> Last update of whois database: Sat, 29 Nov 2014 15:56:18 GMT <<<

and...

jguy@neptune ~> whois ae4-69.atl11.ip4.gtt.net
No match for "AE4-69.ATL11.IP4.GTT.NET".
>>> Last update of whois database: Sat, 29 Nov 2014 15:57:20 GMT <<<

If you whois gtt.net, you receive information that they are located in Virginia, not in Germany or New York.

This has been brought up with the same response I gave in IRC: "we can't do anything".

As the connection failure happens at a step that's outside the actual RoM server or your ISP, there is little ANY of us can do, especially considering the packet loss occurs more towards the server side but not at the server or even at the datacenter hosting the RoM servers. The best we can do is forward to the IT folks that some are experiencing packet loss (we HAVE done this) and hope for the best, but it'll probably be a "we can just wait until it blows over like any routing failure on the internet can do".

According to whois, the ae4-69.atl11.ip4.gtt.net location is in New York and the xe-8-1-7.mia12.ip4.gtt.net connection is in Germany.

Someone should check with the German owner first since the packet loss is occurring there.

Not quite sure where you're seeing that data, considering:

...

If you whois gtt.net, you receive information that they are located in Virginia, not in Germany or New York.

There is more to whois lookups than just dropping the full DNS name into the tool... They do not have forward DNS resolution setup for those names (which is strange), only reverse lookups... For example, now my route shows xe-8-2-7.mia12.ip4.gtt.net rather than 8-1-7 today, but the corresponding IP address is 89.149.184.22. If you do a DNS reverse lookup on it, you get the xe-8-2-7.mia12.ip4.gtt.net hostname that the MTR tool is reporting. If you take that to an ARIN whois, you see that the block is controlled by RIPE (the european IP management group). If you go directly to RIPE and lookup that IP address, you get this:

Which begs the question: Are are our packets destined to US servers going to Germany before heading back to Florida? The latency does not suggest that this is actually happening, but something is certainly strange. Why gtt would be using those IPs in the US is beyond me.
