Windows 10 and ROM

Has anyone downloaded W10 and has there been any issues running ROM with it, yet?

My only issue was that it changed my settings back to where, when I type, the mouse has difficulty moving xD My mouse settings wouldn't open (kept crashing), but a restart fixed that, so now it's fine.

I've had no problems with it. It runs very smoothly with no hangups.

Did you just do a straight OS update? Didn't have to do anything to get the game working?

No problems on my end either. Did a straight up Win 8.1->10 install. Took like 15-20 minutes and started up RoM. Felt a little smoother, possibly updated graphics card drivers in that update.

Some people on DE reported problems with Alt-tabbing but apart from that, nothing yet.

Yes, cannot alt-tab straightforwardly. If you try to alt-tab to another window the RoM window will go black and you cannot get out of it. What I had to do was windows key and on task bar select tabs and create a new desktop. Then go to that desktop, open control panel in that desktop (Note if control panel was open in other desktop you have to close it there first) to close the RoM client. CNTL-ALT-DEL will not work, the window appears behind the black RoM screen and you cannot get to it.

Or, restart your computer.

Grrr...what a pain.

Crashing is now much more of a big deal. In Win7, the typical crash took you to desktop where it was relatively painless to open control panel and end the RoM client. So far, every crash I have experienced in Win10 has been the blackscreen variety where I have to do the create new desktop maneuver to recover.

Also, having mouse issues...but that is most probably driver related.

I'm going to wait until they come out with a 2nd patch fix before upgrading to Win10. And yes, i'm aware that a first patch fix has not been released; usually the history is the first patch makes some fixes but causes more problems. The 2nd patch is the real one that fixes most of the major issues.

I'd also look at win10 privacy stuff before upgrading.

I know I was on the fence, took 1 look at some of the fine print and said "nope".

I have similar reservations myself about the upgrade...

Privacy settings all appear to default to 'opt in' by default and would mean putting in a little bit of time to find them all and turn them off.

Initial releases may or may not go smoothly and I'm inclined to wait until the first issues surface and an update emerges.

Upgrading Windows OS's never really goes well for me, so I would definitely take some time to back-up and go for a clean install a few months down the line...

Ditto on the 'it can wait' upgrade line. Don't even remember the last time I got the latest Windows release without some sort of major patch coming out first. Companies like to get software out the door as quickly as possible and are willing to accept certain known bugs as part of those releases. Well, just because they are comfortable doesn't mean I am. And then there are those unexpected cases that pop up and need emergency fixes for. I'd rather not be part of the bleeding edge just for a few more new features and wait until a more stable release goes out. To each their own of course.

I know at least their malware protection service will automatically turn itself on after it had been "opt-out'd" for an extended period of time, as well as the fact that you cannot turn off/choose windows updates(can only choose fully automatic or specify when).

not gonna lie, i found it quite "big brother"-ish, and somewhat terrifying.

(only reason i am still on windows atm is games. other than that and i would already be a full convert).

Make sure you're on the right region of RoM. A fresh install sets the region to ENEU. Also, make sure you're trying to log into the right region's website.

Check you're on the right region.

If you play on the US servers, you'll likely have to change the region on the RoM game launcher and you'll find you need to switch the drop-down at the top of the website to US too.

Mostly reason regular folks computer get infected with viruses and malware (folks like my parents and I am sure we all know many users with close to zero knowledge of computer skills) is because they don't know how/where to get protection from and when protection is outdated etc. Knowing this, IMHO malware protection should be as stubborn as that and no, you are not selling your soul for that - regulation regarding what and how MS can use from collected data is already very regulated and will be just more regulated in future, if they like to stay in business.

Same goes for updates - windows becomes idiot proof - and I don't have to go through months worth of updates every time I visit my family...

IMHO - those 2 things will fix 95% of computer problems world wide...

BTW, everything we throw at Win 10 worked. I have bit over 700 games on steam and did not find single one that did not install and work properly so far. I have a friend with over 4K games and all of them work. (I know, he is crazy collecting all those games)

Even some stuff that did not work well on Win 7 or 8.1 now works, and memory/processor footprint is minimal. My laptop used to overheat and used to take few minutes to boot, but now its in fraction of time.

Sure, don't have RoM Client installed in a while, but I am sure it should work as everything else does...

not saying it's not steps in the right direction for your average/below average "user", but personally, for /me/, i felt it was crossing lines.

thus, i don't think i will be upgrading anytime soon.

awareness of the "fine print"/repurcussions of what you are doing, no matter good, bad, appropriate, inappropriate, is better than no awareness at all.

to be fair, i am fairly sure win10 has some major improvements on the backend. if you can overlook the issues i personally have with it for a performance improvement, then by all means, have at it.

anyways, this has gone offtopic, and i apologize.

I agree its bit off topic, but that should not be issue as some folks might be worried about their privacy.

I work with computers, databases and network, and in my opinion, there is no such a thing like privacy, even for 'seasoned' computer user. For example, you can opt from having facebook, but some of your school friends are more then likely to post picture from your school with tagged faces that includes your face with name... and I guess everyone from there knows what school you went to... and just add all other possibilities like this... there are many...

This is not even close to part someone hacking into your computer (with good or bad intention :)) , including good boys that supposed to keep us safe, right?

Browsing internet as anonymous is possible, but just remember that services such as ToR browsing is actually more monitored exactly because is being used for some illegal stuff.

And as friend said on ATS forum - if MS gonna check what I am doing and based on that provide me suggestions for news, sales and porn sites, so be it... :)

I still have one computer on Ubuntu, while I'm moving everything else to Win 10. It has been some time now that I also use One Drive as backup for pictures. (Always was worried someone steals my laptop/external HD with pictures... those are more worth to me than all my computers.)

And for conclusion - to add - WIn 10 is so far easiest and best experience from installation point. It takes much less time to install, it has some cool features that used to be extra programs for Win and mostly from Linux distributions, such as multiple desktops. (Ctrl + WIn + Left / Right Cursor to switch between desktops)

I recently installed the Win 10 update and have had no major issues. At this time, the only things I've tested that did not automatically transfer over were startup services such as the Intel Rapid Storage Technology applet (runs in the background and probably needs a manual update) and the Curse Client startup applet. Curse does, however, run from the desktop icon.

My a/v and security software was not replaced with the built-in Win 10 package. The Win 7 theme I'd selected remained in place, and all my desktop icons are there, including the Win 7 Control Panel icon. That works, but the choices are limited to the Win 10 CP selections--which do not include a link to Windows/Microsoft Update. That is "normal" in Win 10.

I have not played with Cortana. I don't really need it, and I understand that it may bring on all sorts of other privacy/security issues. If you decide to activate it, Caveat Emptor. See DOS Tip below.

I have taken a look at the Win 10 "Edge" browser. Very plain and dull windows, it's married to the Bing search service, and, at this time, it does not allow you to add or preference other search services (Google, for example). I have not yet figured how to reset the home page/portal.

I do have a DOS Tip when performing the update: Do NOT select "Use Quick Settings" when prompted, on the "Let's Get Started" page. Instead, look for and click on the small print across from that right-side, obvious button that says something like "Let me choose my own settings". This will allow you to easily deselect all of the intrusive options about sending stuff to Microsoft. The only one I left on was sending error messages (2nd page of settings).

The only thing even mildly unsettling (to me) about the upgrade process was how Mac-like the welcome messages were once the machine had gone through the three restart phases. Those who have done the upgrade will understand.

Otherwise... :thumbsup:

In the case you missed what Kalvan has said, and have pushed 'quick setup', click start >> settings >> privacy and you will have bunch of options that you can disable/enable, from Cortana getting to know you to location services, camera and mic (what app can use it etc.).

To test Cortana - tell her:

* 'Sing me a lullaby
* Sing me a song
* Tell me a joke
* What does Cortana mean?
* Are you male or female?
* Who’s your daddy? (changed - might not work)
* Will you marry me?
* Open the pod bay doors

:D
