What is up with this memory warning?

I have an Intel HD graphics card in my laptop - yes I know laptops aren't great for gaming and that Intel graphics are pretty poor for gaming too!

BUT - mine does say it has: "approx. total memory 1792 MB"

ROM's reqs on this state that 128 MB are min req.

Then why do I keep getting a pop up window warning me that "system memory is running at an unhealthy level"?

(or something to that effect)

The game runs ok but does lock up and DC from the server often! :(

I would greatly appreciate any help on this subject!

OH, one thing more: if I keep trying to play under these conditions will it fry my graphics entirely? ;(

ignore it
it really has nothing to do with your machine, but rather how not well coded ^.^ RoM is

there is a setting ingame to 'muzzle it' (disable the message)

Well it depends on whether the message is from ROM (within your game client) or Windows (outside of ROM). It's possible you do have low memory and are running too many programs open at the same time, and lockups and crashes are what happens when you run out of memory.

If you only have ROM open and it says you have 1792 MB (1.8 GB), then you probably do have a low amount memory installed in your computer, maybe only 2 or 3 GB total, which wouldn't be enough to allow you to run ROM and many other programs simultaneously.

As far as frying your computer, lack of memory won't affect that. You should get one of those cooling mats or put a small fan next to your laptop if you feel it's getting too hot. I originally wrote if your fan fails, but forgot you said it's a laptop. lol

If once you in game you click on function's wheel and click on Video & Audio settings & put a check mark in box next to Deactivate High Memory Usage Warning, you will no longer get the message if it's within the game and not your actual memory on pc. There is a memory leak within the game and they never fixed it, instead they added the option to deactivate the annoying message. :) Also make sure to relog to save setting after you put check in box.

Ok thanks everyone - I will do that and then see what happens!

Radeon, how can I tell what other programs are running and is there a safe way to shut them down?

(and by "programs" did you mean apps or processes, because I was told shutting processes down can cause instability!)

ctrl+shift+esc will open task manager. from there you can view all processes and applications running on the computer (if running under admin).

while it may not be the best idea, most of the unimportant processes (pretty much anything thats not OS-related) can be killed at any moment with minimal adverse effects, however, it is still not a good idea to go ending things willy-nilly, and most things will require a restart (app or computer) to function again.

there are tools out there that can enable "game mode" on a machine, which halts/stops auxillery features while it is turned on, and then restarts them when turned off (updaters, background scanners, etc), to enable maximum efficiency when gaming. unfortunately, i'm not very familiar with them (my system is semi-overkill for what i use it for, so never really needed it), but other people might have some recommendations (i know a couple gaming hardware companies have their own, but thats about it).

Thanks Cike!

I did have another thought though - if it is the video memory that is the culprit then

why would other running programs have much effect on it? :S

(unless I was trying to run more than one game at a time or streaming video or something like that!)

Because running applications uses up ram. None or to low ram = crash or poor performance.

Zerienga,

It isn't my RAM we're discussing - it's my Intel HD graphics memory! :pinch:

It has like 2 Gb - my RAM is 4 Gb - twice the min req for ROM! :P

2gb video on 4gb machine is silly. Not to mention that giving video memory to laptop Intel chipset is double extra silly. Just run a memory cleaner
-- Rustyx --- 92R / 92S / 92M on Reni (Guild KnightShift). Yes, running the new FOTM R/M, cause I am not elf enough to be WD/S.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

Well I'm pretty much stuck with the video memory I have aren't I! :P

Now, what is a memory cleaner and is there a free version you'd recommend?

Usually Intel HD means you have a graphics chip instead of a dedicated graphics card. ROM likes dedicated memory. I use to run ROM on an office oriented laptop and I would get that warning often enough to drive me bananas.

Your Intel HD graphics chip info might read as up to 1.8GB but the actual dedicated video memory of most of those chips run between 16-256mb. I believe ROM is reading the dedicated graphics portion and that is why you're getting the popup. The other portion (the majority of the 1.8GB) is actually pulled from your RAM. ROM doesn't like RAM as much as it likes dedicated video memory. Video Memory is faster and more reliable for .. video stuffs.

These guys know what they're talking about: Memory cleaner, registry cleaner, antivirus, malware scanner etc

Another trick that can help is to increase your file page size. If you have 10-25GB to spare and you use a hard disc this may or may not help. This wont help much if you use an SSD hard drive.

Windows 7
Start->Right Click Computer->Properties->Advanced System Settings->Advanced Tab->Click Change (Custom 10-25GB helps)

Windows 10
Type Performance in the start menu->Adjust the Appearance and Performance of Windows->Advanced->Click Change (Custom: 10-25GB)

Best of luck!

I use cleanmem. Honestly, these programs don't really do much other than let you monitor usage conveniently from the desktop.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/cleanmem,1.html

If that link doesn't work, just google "cleanmem" and you will see several links.

Another one I like to monitor temperatures is cpuid hardware monitor.

Thanks Radeon, but after I installed cleanmem I saw it didn't put up a shortcut like it was supposed to
and when I clicked on the exe. in it's folder it gave me the pop up I had to click yes in and then - nothing happened at all! 8|

As MrWallace said, the IntelHD integrated graphics chipset is just that--integrated onto your system board. Since you use a laptop, you're stuck with it.

Depending on the specific model, the chipset comes with anywhere from 128MB to 512MB video RAM. I suspect yours is probably around 256MB. However, the chipset is programmed (in ROM, read-only memory, not the game) to "share" as much of your free, available RAM as it can, depending on the video load. This is one--likely the main--reason why you're getting the warning message.

Integrated video is less than good, mmmkay?

I don't have any shortcut for it either. My cleanmem shows up as an icon and small info bar in my system tray (bottom right of screen in the taskbar). I haven't downloaded the lastest one, however, so maybe they changed how it works. Maybe the link was bad so try again or use another download location.

Windows OS typically take 2-3gbs of ram just to run normally, whether it's vista, win7, win 8/8.1 or win 10. That's typical, 4gigs doesn't get you much if you have a few background apps doing things, anything that goes over will dip into your pagefile and even then certain things will get put into a que like state till your laptop/pc gets to processing it.

As for laptop video cards as ppl have said before, it's integrated video and it is shared memory to a point.

The memory warning is not for your video ram anyway, it is for your norm ram. The coding for Rom has many memory leaks and it is very inefficient, each client open can typically take 1.1-1.6gigs of ram idle or when you're doing something on it.

As for memory cleaners, though sometimes they do tend to help but only by way of preceding windows to optimize memory usage as all windows OS's do the same thing anyway, the threshold is just a bit higher then memory boosting software before it starts to kill or remove memory killing apps.

The good thing now a days is that decent memory can be found for cheap, you will most likely have to slots for ram and depending on your laptop, should be able to upgrade to 6 or 8 gigs minimum as well as possibly speed up your ram.

i'd take a look at that even if you have 4 or 6 already, i'd try and get to 8 and if not then see if you can swap to faster ram modules. either way, it will only help your laptops performance regardless

I'm running ROM on my desktop with Windows 7, 64 bit, with 8GB of RAM and a 2 GB Nvidia graphics card, and I get the memory warning all the time. It doesn't matter how much memory (system or graphic) your computer has. The memory leak in rom will still cause the message and if you don't keep an eye on it, can crash your game. My client rarely crashes (and I typically have 2 characters on at a time. I use cleanmem. I configure a hotkey for it and anytime after changing channels, porting, entering or exiting any instance, I hit my hotkey to have cleanmem clean it up. With 2 clients running, my system tends to be right around 2.5 - 3.5 GB in use. It's a pain to always have to manually clean memory, but a single hotkey every so often is better than a crash.
