I'm actually at a loss as to why the latest patch isn't included in the game? I mean, if you're going to insist on having people spend, at least in my case, several hours downloading the game, why not put in the extra 2GBs of patches?
That really doesn't make any sense, unless this was a retail game like WoW or Guild Wars or something.
I'm actually on the cusp of trying an experiment where I replace the complete patched laptop version within my desktop, as it has a better graphics card. Yes, I'm fairly sure there's some danger in that, but really. If it wasn't for my network drive, I'd be spending another full day downloading and patching, when I was finally able to actually play today (after four days I might add).
Personally, I'd rather buy the game or get an ISO instead of wasting my days. That isn't a good way to markey a game, as I've said, for a new player. A player doesn't want to be sitting and watching the game install; they want to play! How can I play if I've lost interest before even getting the game patched?
That's just poor business sense, sorry to say.
The problem here is that the installation files themselves are *static*. Unless and until
Frogster EU passes along a new, recompiled set of installer files that include most of the update patches that have been issued the past couple of months, there will be a certain number of updates that *have* to be downloaded and installed. And if you were to install an older client download package...
While I've heard rumblings that Frogster US wants to make installation discs available, the update problem will still be there.
You *can* burn the installation files you have to a DVD (you'll need a double-layer disc, since the total file size is ~5.3GB total), but that's about as far as you can go with it. If you reinstall from the DVD, you still have to go through the entire patching process.
Just keep your fingers (and other appendages) crossed that Frogster EU makes a new set of installation files available when all of the Chapter 3 content is finally added to the current game! (Hint, hint, hint, to The Powers That Are.)
Oh, and if you think installing RoM and waiting for the updates to download and install is like watching grass grow, try watching someone installing WoW from the original game discs, along with every content expansion that had been issued by Blizzard. I've done that. A friend of mine is/was a WoW-head (he's pist at Blizzard right now and is threatening to leave the game--Yay!) and I sadly watched him install and update WoW on his then-new Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook a couple of years ago. That was so he could multibox, as well as play WoW whenever he was out and about and was bored. It took *hours*, and he only had three sets of CDs (*not* DVDs

) to install from...it would be even worse now.
*sigh*
