Oh good Lord- Slag, that was me teasing. I fully admit to my Spanish speaking guildies how much I respect them for how well they speak English and how dunce-like they make me feel in my ability to speak no Spanish whatsoever beyond the few insults they've managed to teach me. In the early days of our guild, when we were all English speakers, I was initially afraid to take in Spanish speakers; not because I was racist or because I dislike Spanish-speakers- far from it. I was afraid I would be a bad leader to them because I wouldn't be able to talk to them in their own language. One guy in particular, Arles, one of our tanks, convinced me otherwise. He teases me endlessly about my lack of Spanish (and I tease him about his bad English)- one time he made me use Google translate to speak to him in Spanish for a whole day lol, but we manage somehow to always communicate even if it takes a few tries.
Thanks to Arles, Notorious actually has a pretty large amount of Spanish speakers, and we're definitely a stronger and better guild because of it. I can't imagine going back to all English speakers, I can't imagine losing the friends that I've made, and I'm so glad that he convinced me that having a polyglot guild was the way to go. All it takes is respect and a sincere effort to communicate. Part of respecting the Spanish speakers is recognizing that whether or not Palenque was billed as a Spanish speaking server or not, it was meant to be, and my Spanish-speakers like the fact that I acknowledge that. Whether we English-speakers like it or not, we're the invaders on their turf, so to speak, and if/when people complain about Spanish being spoken in guild chat or Vent, I smack them down. Come to think of it, no one has complained in a long time- I think the English speakers have finally all come to value our Spanish speakers as much as I do.
But, Spanish is gobbledygook to me, and to the vast majority of the English speakers on Palenque. No one should be proud of the fact that the English speaking community is vastly unilingual whereas the Spanish speaking community can boast about being almost universally bilingual. I certainly am not proud of it, but that's reality. Whether it was intended to be bilingual or not, Palenque is bilingual. Getting some acknowledgement of that fact from Frogster by way of scroll banners in English and our own forums here is all we want.
