whisper spam?

I've never had this before, but starting in the last week one of my toons has been getting whispered spam about every 15-20 minutes.

Where are they getting my name? I very seldom use world shout, think I've bought megas twice in the almost three years I've been playing, I'm not in ghetto world, I don't buy or sell diamonds, I've never bought gold, most of my conversations take place in guild or party chat, I'm just plain not all that talkative so it's not like my name is plastered all over world like some players who never seem to get those annoying whispers.

I'm 70/70, and very very seldom in low level zones, so unlikely that some spammer just grabbed my name as I walked by.
None of the other toons I play get the whispers, so it's not the account, it's the toon. Where did they get my name, and are there any steps I can take to avoid it happening again?

I get the same thing.

I think the spam is coming from the old 'party search' mechanism. If you aren't in a party, right click on your upper left portrait. In the drop down menu there is a 'looking for party' option. The default maybe have been reset to 'on' which you can switch to 'off'. (I think there is an add-on that resets the default to 'on' and keeps there but I don't know which one).

If anyone knows how to permanently set it to 'off', I'd liked to know too. Ever time I crash and re-log I'm welcomed by my favorite spammer.

SetFindPartyState( false );throw that in one of your addons where it updates a lot and it will be like permanant

Thanks for the answers, Doesn't seem to be party setting, it's always blank whenever I check.

Just wondering if I didn't accidentally whisper one when reporting and got stuck on a friends list somehow.

Granted, my reply is a bit late, but here's some of the skinny:

Whisper spam from the gold sellers happens every so often. Since they're already violating the EUALA, I doubt that they're above using a third-party program to go invisible and/or capture the names of legitimate players on a "drive-by" basis, then spamming messages in /w.

Your best bet is to first, right click on the spammer toon's name in your chat window and select Report Spam. This will send a spam report and the toon will eventually be dealt with. Report Spam should also add them to your blacklist, but you can do that manually, just to make sure.

Hope this helps.

Don't worry, soon Mail spam will start since nothing is done to the "EULA violators". If that happens just get the addon to block Mail spam LOL

Good tip, but...

Since many of us keeping have our LFP status toggle back on, on our high level main toons, but not on our lower level alts, is there a setting we can add/change in those toon setup/config text files in RoM's hidden folder, to keep it permanently off without having to resort to even more addon intervention to workaround what Runewaker refuses to fix?

Here is the REAL skinny:

Whisper spam from the gold sellers happens EVERY TIME you check-box your "Looking for Party" feature. Just check the box, and wait a minute. Bingo, whispers. It has been that way for YEARS.

Short answer: no
Long answer: in ch 2 there used to be a way but it was removed and i believe it resets to default "on" everytime u change zones with a loading screen so find an addon that runs an onload loading screen and toss that command in there, shoot i forgot where i threw mine but it works

I finally got motivated to look at those setup files. Most of them are not even text, and would take a hex editor and specific knowledge of what to change, even IF that setting was there. Oh well.

Also, only running that command in an addon that runs on an onload loading screen, is not enough. My status changes even if I remain stationary long enough. One guess is that the status toggle is tied to the new timer that attempts to reverse an old (3 year old) popular exploit, that has been publicly announced as being patch/fixed anyway.

That's really weird, I have the same problem but from what I remember, that box has ALWAYS been unchecked as default for me. And about mid-April, when I had turned on that feature coz I was curious to see who had that checked, then unchecked afterward, now whenever I log into the game, the game thinks the default is having it checkmarked ON, completely annoying.

Well not with the whole stationary thing making it recheck for me, but after about 30 mins or so in the same zone even being active, the box rechecks itself for me. UGH!

Anyways yah, I guess merge my other thread w/this one, I didn't see this thread before coz I was searching for dif keywords apparently.

Is there anyway, the gms or whatever can RESET that Search for Party list & wipe everyone from that list? I'm beginning to think that maybe our character names are really permanently stuck inside the Looking for Party list regardless if we have that function turned on or not, or make sure that when we log on the default setting is always Off. Some weird reason, (I didn't add any addons or nothing that day, only thing I could think of that I did differently that day was I messed around with the Recruitment Board/Application on one character, not all the characters affected with this goldseller whisper spam though) but now my default is On for that setting now when the default had always been Off.

is that still the case for US side? really? (it would be nice if) :)
on EU side we have to report all the crap manually by hand because reporting anything via ingame has been deactivated "ages" ago. What it does do is session-blackist the spam-reported char, so until relog no more messages from that one (even with otherwise full blacklist), alas not permanently.

Well, it used to work that way. I've since been informed that when the in-game reporting was disabled--when the new Support Portal went online--the actual reporting of the spammer also went *poof*. It now works as you described. Or doesn't work, depending on how you look at it. :(

So now what are we supposed to do? Reporting manually doesn't really do anything or does it, seems like new gold sellers will spam us with whispers anyways....
Is it possible to just wipe everyone from the Searching for Party list or whatever, if that is indeed the cause of our problem?

Even if that were to work, how do we fix the function from automatically rechecking itself after some time has passed? Relogging checks the box, being in the same zone too long rechecks it, how is it affecting only some of us but not everyone? Coz it would make sense if everyone's default was set to On upon logging in, which is not the case.
