So much for fluid gameplay with memory leaks

I got an alert that the memory usage of my PC had gone out of the healthy limits, and this was an in-game warning, so I checked my memory usage to find this nice alert:

I guess that's not supposed to be happening.

This memory issue isn't anything new. RoM always had a memory leak problem and it has always had an excessive memory usage problem. The only thing they did in this patch was code in that warning which is basically saying "You're about to crash" instead of fixing the memory leak problem... It's their way of saying "We know the problem exists but we're not gonna fix it so restart your client".

I already know that RoM has always had memory leaks (*coughdalanisCough*), I just somehow expected them to release at least playable content this time. Don't know what I was thinking of.

Yeah, ROM always had memory leaks. The memory usage is high, but not really different than what I used to be seeing in Ch4. My game session starts at just under 1GB and quickly grows to 1.2GB once I port a few times. CPU usage? Depends on CPU, not shown in the photo. Are those numbers appreciably different than they used to be in Ch4 for you?

A lot different. RoM wouldn't use more than 25-30% CPU unless I was in Dalanis, which makes me think this new starting area is just another Dalanis case and that's probably it.

I didn't like the start of any of the 2 new classes anyways, so I don't think I'll be playing them. I still need to check the new 70+ areas with my rogue though.

Could be. Problem with Dalanis is that it's geometry is too elaborate, more elaborate than game can handle. Perhaps new area is the same. While that sucks, at least it is an area that is going to be used very little - after the toon is done with first dozen levels, there is likely little reason to go back there.

I have not seen any particular graphical slowdown in new area, so hopefully it is more clean. I figure people will be spending lots more time in Rorazan, to run the new instance; and maybe EOJ farm too, although at first glance the EOJ quests are quite a bit better in TB.

I got that warning when I ported to the north village in Tergothen Bay. But RoM tends to hover around 1.3 gigs of ram on my pc anyway. I tend to crash more when it approaches 1.6... which I don't get when I have over 6 gigs of ram and RoM is the only real app using any memory.

It's just Runewacky's attempt to shift blame for the memory leaks and subsequent crashes away from them and onto Frogster's customers.

I get the warnings in the same areas where it was laggy previously.

I need to get a screenshot of Rusty running around in that cute pink tinfoil hat.

I did have the popup message, well, "pop up" yesterday whilst driving around Varanas with my new little person toon. I have 8GB system RAM installed and was nowhere close to having it maxed out. (About 6GB being used at the time according to my RAM usage widget.) I didn't have any other issues other than the usual fatal crash after exiting the client. YMMV.

Agh c'mon... it's easier than that. Look at your old screenshot. Look at what you have now. Old - "have now" = missing tp ;)

Totally unrelated, but wow the Win8 task manager looks awesome! It's possibly the first thing about Win8 I've seen that's made me say, "hey, that's really cool!" :)

I had broken water & some ground textures along with an increased crash rate after the chapter 5 patch.

I did a clean install & re-patched. All textures are fixed, no crashes yet but I did see the excessive memory message when I ported to the new zone.

I may have to try that. Thinking of upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8. If I do I will let you know how it goes.
