Im done

As people may know, I've had problems with the UI resetting constantly lately. Well it reset again tonight after a disconnect from the rom servers. Do not tell me its anything but fail rom servers because NOTHING else I had open at the time disconnected, only rom did. Since it reset my ui once again I decided I'm done. I uninstalled and will not be going back. Thanks to the awful coding of this game you've lost another player and customer. Had fun while I was here and will miss my friends, but the headaches and constant need to spend large chunks of time to get my ui back the way I wanted, just to have it reset again in a few days isn't worth staying.

UI settings are from user's own computer, not server side or anything.

Agree with Rave, that's a client side issue not server. It's some setting you've made in the game, or something else on your computer, NOT RoM.

My UI resets every so often too (of course not counting the redoing of any changes that I make if the game crashes rather than exits properly) and it is obviously is a client problem (though why this would make it any less RoM's problem than if it was a server error, I am not entirely sure).

The solution is to backup your My Documents RoM folder so that you don't have to manually adjust everything in your UI again. Blaming the game for your failure to backup is hardly sensible -particularly if you have been having this issue for a long time. It is more profitable to simply grow a pair.

However your whining 'I made a mistake and don't want to play any more' thread might help remind people to backup their settings. I haven't done that in *ages*. Definitely will do it now, probably sometime next week. Maybe the week after.

You can save your interface settings(This includes addon settings, aswell as warrecord data) by making a copy of the "hidden" runes of magic folder. Located in "My Documents"

If you have a reset just copy over it with the backup and presto good as new. Make a fresh backup everytime you change settings or add/remove addons etc.

To make a hidden folder visible, simply open a folder, click on "Organize"(for windows 7) then "Folder and search options" to open a settings window. In this window select the second tab which is the "view" tab. In the list make sure that you check the "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" option. Click apply/ok

Your runes of magic folder is viewable to backup.

You're welcome :)

If it was server side, or bad code as you put it, there would be hundreds of posts here every week about the same thing.

If the chat windows and other elements of the UI are being pushed off the screen edges, that tells me that something is changing your resolution, the game does not do that unless you open up the settings and hit accept. When you open settings, the resolution defaults to svga resolution (800x600) you need to set that to your preferred resolution. If you have the UI set up the way you want it at 1600:900, letting it reset to 800x600 will push everything off the edges.

Not sure if UI should be reason to abandon game, as way to fix it is so easy, even I can do it. :D

Just backup 'SaveVariables.lua' in 'My Documents' >> Runes of Magic sub-folder. By backup, I mean just install 7zip if you don't have it, right click the file and select 'Add to "SaveVariables.7z"' - takes second to do.

Later when you have problem, just open that file and extract file on the top of the one in folder.

Program that will mess this file is usually AAH, especially if you open AH on more then one client - they all are trying to write to this file at the same time.

I have never had my UI reset in 4 years of playing this game, so I don't believe that this is a RoM problem.

When solution to a problem is as easy to find and to deal with as this one, one has to assume that not doing so is deliberate. That horse sees water, all right, it just doesn't want to drink it; so no point in pointing it toward the nearby lake.

Why bring sarah jessica parker into this and why do you want her to drink from the lake? JK :D

But seriously I agree with you on that. I had the same issues, everyday it reset and i got fed up so I did some research and testing and figured out where the information was stored and just backed it up. Problem Solved.

Then there is that. I have ROM installed on a netbook. 1GB RAM does not let you run much, so no addons there. That install never lost UI.

And, of course, reading savevariables, you get to see how much stuff is stored by some addons. It is heck of a lot.

quick backup batch file:

copy C:\Documents\"Runes of Magic"\name of toon here\*.* C:\backup folder name /y

copy and paste into notepad, rename as whatever.bat, then put a link on your desktop

The /y at the end basically just answers 'yes' to the inevitable 'file exists, over write?' question that will pop up

as written, it will copy everything in the character folder to the backup folder, and overwrite whatever is in there with the same name.
Simply reverse it to restore
copy C:\backup folder name \*.* C:\Documents\"Runes of Magic"\name of toon here\ /y

Any folder or file name that has spaces needs to be enclosed in quotes "name with spaces"

you -may- need to select 'run as admin' depending on your settings

1/8th second backup or restore of the toon settings

Problem is though, this Ziav fella, once he gets an idea stuck in his head.... nobody can derail him from it, or help him realize hes wrong, ive seen other posts i.e. the post about why do you let other players hack in siege or whatever the name is. Weve all tried helping him numerous times on other things, but when you try to, he calls you fanbois, and such, just let him go its for the best, you just cant help some people. :P

And it is easy to backup, even vfwiffo can do it.... :)

I strongly suggest to everyone to install 7zip - its free and does amazing job for backups. We use it in company and we had better results for large files then with WinZip or WinRar.

I don't use script for backups, but it's not bad idea to create one. (sh person in me likes this idea :))

As for OP not wanting help, I go with idea that some other people will look for the same problem and like to give easy solution... we don't need people RQ because of unstable UI with many add-ons.

Curse Client actually attempts to store some of that data server side (on Curse's server) and increases the chances of losing UI settings.

The best thing to do, as was suggested above, is to make sure once you are done configuring all your add-ons and characters and layouts is to close the client without crashing it.

If you crash right after you are done configuring you lose all your settings.

Just to make it clear.

1) Log in game, configure everything (LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND).
2) Find Hidden Runes of Magic folder in "My Documents".
3) Copy that folder and name the copy "Runes of Magic Back Up".
4) Make sure you avoid using add-ons that could possible corrupt your settings. (Older ones especially and a few add-ons also bloat up your UI settings, clearing them out help in loading time)
