Kudos to the team for being on top of the daylight savings time change this time around.

Luckly time machines doesn't sell on drugstore or I know a few people (me included) that would love to go back and kill the $%@#$%@$ that invented daylight savings.

The guy you wanna kill would be insect collector George Vernon Hudson. He proposed a paper to move clocks 2 hours to give him more light to collect insects.

DST use started back in Europe during WWI as a way to conserve coal during war-time. Parts of the US started using it in the 50's & 60's, but wasn't widely used until the 70's during our energy crisis.

Actually, blame the concept on Benjamin Franklin.

If you go back in time, make sure you don't kill him before he invents bifocals. I need mine, thanks. :D

It is now custom to show that video every time we change times...

Thank you for keeping tradition... :)

Speaking as someone who had to implement DST calculations in some software, I say it is a good feature. Anything that keeps me gainfully employed is a plus. :p Ben Franklin is A-OK in my book, even if he does take the "go fly a kite" comments too literally.

It is far too embedded already into existing system. Taking it out would be a pain in the butt, like Y2K in reverse. And, who knows, the way things are going, we might be back to agrarian economy soon, and then it will come handy.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

Huh, I guess that little checkbox for system time saying "Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time" must do nothing then. Maybe in anything that is not a modern computer it is a problem.

At least this round and the previous round were smooth transitions in comparison to other times.
A real sysadmin knows how to change the time.
If you make the same mistake while trying to make up for the previous one, you are doing something wrong.

As much as I'd love to say I offer consulting services, the scope of things broken is too large.

First time seeing this video, and it'a true, in Brazil, only central, southeast and south parts of country adopt daylight savings, what is already annoying for internal matters, imagine when we have to schedule something with other countries. Like as for now I'm bennefiting from US daylight saving, since we're on standard time so siege starts for me 1h earlier. Then near the end of the year will be hell, when Brazil starts its own crap and US end theirs, so Siege will start 1AM for me so, no siege for me at all, or I can't pay the bills >.<

I really hope congress does what it is currently talking about and does away with the antiquated useless idea of changing the time.

As I'm sure you already discovered, the servers were reset during maintenance so siege is now at 10pm EDT.

I'll give you a different one. It seems that a well-meaning but wrong-headed Florida state legislooter has initiated a bill to do away with DST in Florida. Perhaps he thinks that since AZ and parts of NM don't have DST, Florida doesn't need it, either.

Some fellow legislooters are against this, claiming that it would confuse tourists and other visitors.

I tend to agree with the latter. Visitors coming into the US through Florida would stand a good chance of missing connecting flights elsewhere due to time confusion.. And tourists might miss out on their E-ticket rides at Disneyworld and other major theme park attractions.

I'd hate my watch and Verizon smartphone to be arguing over what time it really was. (Watch has auto-DST adjustment based on NIST clock in Fort Collins, CO, time adjustment happens around 3am Mountain Time. Verizon smartphone is sometimes not all that smart.) :D

Late thought: If there was no DST in FL, would the RoM servers use DST or not? <shudder>

I thought the RoM servers were in CA not FL...

Also, what is the point in today's world of DST? There isn't one. At one time DST made sense, it no longer does.

The US RoM servers were moved from CA to FL about this time last year, after you'd ragequit. The AU server (Thalia) was also moved there, but late in the year.

IMO, DST still makes some sense. It does tend to promote a certain amount of additional shopping which, as some suggest, tends to stimulate the economy. But the idea of saving energy--which was the explanation for the earlier and later changeovers ordered by the Bush43 administration--just doesn't wash with me, for various reasons.

I now return this thread to its original topic. :D

Off topic, but funny story related to time. I'm in construction and work all over the place. I'm based in central Michigan and we had a job in grand beach mi, which is like 3/4 mile from the state line.
The first week we were there, the guys all handed in their time sheets, and while I was filling out the checks it hit me that somehow they all had 5 hours less time in than I had written down for the day. It took a couple minutes to figure out that I used the clock in the truck radio to fill out the job reports, and they were using their cell phones to keep track of their time, and the cell phones were getting their signal from Indiana cell towers which were in central time zone, so they were losing an hour as soon as their cell phones switched to those towers. They thought I was just being nice and giving them an an hour overtime every day till I explained what was happening.
I still don't understand why none of them questioned why they could leave the shop at 7am, drive an hour and get to the job site at 8, but at night they'd leave at 5pm drive the same road at the same speed and not get home till 7.

Yep, as Kalvan has said, we got moved.

One thing that he forgot to mention is that new server farm is solely based on Commodore 64 computers, thus we see funny performance and laggy sw. Not to mention hamster that runs the generator wheel... :)

Not sure if cutting AU server down made much sense - they cut their population down to the point that now does not make sense to keep server running... (one of not so smart moves if you ask me)

Oh, c'mon Comodore are very powerful computers, I believe you mistaken by rumors. Actually this is the mainframe from RoM's datacenter, the latest Apple II:
