Hello. Goodbye.

Hello.
I played uo from 98-06. wow from 06-12. I had a friend tell me about ROM. I figured I would give it a try.

Settings won't save. Everytime I log in, I have to reset all my video and audio settings. (This might be win8 issue)
So many bugs, a nice one is finish a quest, turn it in, accept the next quest, run off, only to find the accept failed.
Respawns might be ok for the player who has multiple chars, but for a player just starting out, who is basically stuck using quest gear, trying to kill a path to a quest point with garbage gear is very annoying.
Questing in areas like the volcano, where it's a giant nightmare maze. For a new player, it can take 15 minutes just to find the correct path to the back of the area.
Then, add in mobs with over 50k health, when we have 9k with our pet out and house maid buffs.
No mount unless you buy diamonds. Which $5.00 for a mount isn't to bad. But, it's being held captive for a new player, which means we are either having to buy diamonds, or run around on foot, if our newbie bag fails to give us a mount.

At lvl 56/55 mage/priest, in the volcano area. It's almost impossible to do more than 3 quests an hr.

I have enjoyed many aspects of the game. But, these games are supposed to be fun, and spending 20 minutes clearing a path, only to die, then have to come back and clear the path again, and have a HUGE xp/tp debt makes the game not worth playing.

Thank you and Goodbye.

Hi Galanus,

even though you're telling that you want to leave already, I'd still like to invite you to stay and to let me say a few words first :)

For the settings that wont save, please give me some more information. Do you change the settings in the launcher or after the client has opened? For Win7 I know from own experience that missing admin rights can cause such a problem. One thing I like to do is to change settings in the clientconfig file, because I like precise UI scaling :) This was always saved for me. Changing settings in the launcher was also saved for me. For changing things in the client I experienced on my old PC the problem that it is not saved when the client does not close correctly but with an error. Maybe changing settings in the launcher or in the client config can solve that issue for you as well.

I only know the bug you described from playing with the addon pbInfo. Do you use this addon or does that bug occur without any addons as well?

No mount is something I really don't get. First you get mounts in the newbie bag again and again. Second you can do Malatina Curse of Terror to get mount rent tickets. Third you can build your own mount in the sascilla steppes minigame if you finish fast enough and it's a thirty day mount, fourth you can rent mounts for gold. Fifth you can even get a permanent mount ingame during one of our events (if i remember correctly it's the upcoming one). In all other events you at least have a chance to get a permanent mount. You don't have as much variety in those in game mounts as in the item shop mounts, but that is definetly not a "must have" skins and mount appearance are "nice to have".

For the vulcano and in general the mobs I can recall that I had problems myself back when I started playing the game in Chapter II for the vulcano you need a little bit of gear, that is correct. Back in Chapter II I made equipment with in game fusion stones and green 30-35 per attribute stats. That was enough. The transmutor charges for that came from minigames and twinks (you get 10 free charges at level 10). Back then it was normal to start first imrpovements of equipment with level ~45.
As I've just started playing a new character I can tell you that it is much easier nowadays.

When you play you first class to level 20 in howling mountains/elven island/dwarf starting zone, level your second one to 20 in sascilla steppes and proceed with your third class in the coast of opportunities - so play the game as it is meant to be played, you'll find yourself ending up in pretty good gear with 110 dura and nice stats and even set boni. With those sets even Grafu easy can be played through without improving one single item.
For my new character I sold event items and magic hormones in the auction house, what made good gold, so I could effort to take 2 high dura white items and I combined them with in game fusion stones and each three stats from the new level 74 accessoires - those give the same amount of attributes like a stat from the tomb of the seven heros gives and you can level easy with those. Very easy

I agree that it is hard in some zones (Aslan especially and Ystra as well) not to die - but that also is part of the game. It's not like your character is taking a walk, he's an adventurer in a dangerous environment.

I totally agree with you that for a completly new player there are difficulties, but if you play like described above (and big pop ups are telling you to go to the class hall and the NPCs are telling you where to level up your classes), you will get through without many troubles.

So if you'd stay in the game and provide us with more feedback to ease the access to the game for future players that would be amazing!

Best regards,
~Laghmara

While Laghmara did a great job with her response, I'd like to toss in a few comments of my own.

Settings not saving:

Presuming that you're using the 64-bit version of Windows 8, navigate to C:\Program Files(x86)\Runes of Magic, and find the file named "client.config.ini". Right click on it, select Properties from the context menu, and make sure that in the Attributes portion of the General tab that the file isn't marked (by Windows) as being read-only. If it is, click the checkbox until it shows blank, then click the Apply button and the Ok button.

Once you've done that, open the file with Notepad, and you'll see all of the video and audio settings listed, among other things.

The first section is video settings. Here's what mine looks like:

[display]
windowed width=1600
windowed height=900
fullscreen width=1920
fullscreen height=1080
windowed mode=1
quality=0

You can edit the values to your heart's content, but make sure that the values for fullscreen mode are greater than those for windowed mode, and that the values are consistent with what your monitor will display. If you play in fullscreen mode, make sure that the value for windowed mode=0, not 1. I don't think that the quality value has any effect.

The next section, marked [ui], is irrelevant, unless you want to change the physical sizes of various components of the user interface. This should be done in-game, where you can see the results.

The section after that, [visual detail] needs to be adjusted while you're in-game, and the settings you choose will depend on the display capabilities of your video card or chipset.

The following section, [character detail], covers the in-game character sheet. This is for how detailed your character is shown when you access the character sheet with the "C" command. A value of 0 means less detail, a value of 1 means more detail.

The next section, [visual effects] can be edited safely. This is what mine looks like:

[visual effects]
bloom=0
water reflection=0
water refraction=0
distort fx=0
specular highlight=0

A value of 0 means the effect is turned off, a value of 1 means it's turned on. In my experience, leaving the effects turned off (value=0) provides for the best performance and reduces video lag in-game, to some extent.

The next section, [audio], is for sound and volume. Mine looks like this:

[audio]
master volume=1.000000
ambience volume=1.000000
music volume=0.500000
sound fx volume=1.000000
interface sfx volume=1.000000
music frequency=50.000000

Caveat: My audio is set at, for the most part, max levels, but my in-game audio is also messed up. I blame an older version of TeamSpeak for this, and I have been unable to fix the issue. Edit these values outside of the game on your own responsibility!

The last section, [voice chat], can be left alone. It deals with the built-in voice chat, which has never worked particularly well, and it is defaulted to being turned off. I'd leave it that way.

Finally, done with the technical stuff! :D

Some suggestions for playing RoM, some of which probably match other games you've played:

1. Find and join a decent guild. Not only can your guildmates help you with your questing, but they can also provide valuable information on improving your character's gear and weapon(s). Some players may even provide you with modified gear they no longer need, either for free or at a good gold price. They can also give you tips and help with regards to modifying your own gear, which crafting skills can be the most useful for you, and so on.

2. In Aotulia Volcano, many of the mobs (the Nagas, especially) are elite mobs and can be really tough to deal with. Asking a guildmate or three to help you quest there can be a Very Good Thing. And, there are at least three or four instances in AV where you will need to party-up with others in order to complete quests and the instances themselves. AV is not alone in this, as instances in other zones usually require a party.

Also, and as confusing as AV can be to navigate through, there is a very important NPC located in Titan's Hill that you will need to talk to--Mysterious Torrog. He is essential in getting you to the next zone, Thunderhoof Hills. Do not forget to talk to him and do accept his quest.

3. RoM is a hugely varied and complex game, especially for a new player. Laghmara gave you some excellent suggestions on progressing your character. She's played the game almost as long as I have, and has probably generated more and more varied characters than I have.

I hope you decide to hang around and enjoy the game as much as I have enjoyed it.

Good lord, I must have channeled Fandreith! :D
