Stat allocation

Noob question, but do we get free stats where we can choose to put wherever, or are stats just automatically given upon level?

There are 5 main stats in RoM - stamina, strength, dexterity, intelligence and wisdom.
They each gain a small increase each time you level up.
However, each class also has a passive skill that lets you optionally boost one of these stats further.
For example, a Knight can boost stamina or a Mage can boost Intelligence.
The gear you choose to wear will also boost these stats. For example, leather will boost dexterity as it's usually Rogues and Scouts that wear this and they need more dexterity than other classes.
You will eventually learn how to customise your gear using the Arcane Transmutor, which will allow you to further boost your stats.

I'd suggest not worrying about modding your gear until much later, say level 50+, or even level 55.
There are free gear bags to obtain at level 50, 55, 60 and 65 which will give you better gear than regular quests gear.
After level 65, there are no more gear bags, but you can get much more powerful gear from your quests in each zone from Redhill Mountains and onwards.

As you gain Experience Points to level up, you also gain Talent Points so that you can level up your skills.
At very early stages of the game, you will have too much TP and will be able to keep all your skills maxxed out.
However, after about level 15, you will begin to find that you can no longer do this and you'll need to be selective about where you put the TP. Toward endgame, you will find that each level only gives enough TP to level up a handful of skills.
This means that no 2 Priests, as an example, will have exactly the same skill sets - that all depends on the players choice.

Another part of the customisation in RoM is the Elite Skills.
When you choose your second class (minimum level 10) and can play with 2 active classes, you will be able to learn additional skills unique to your class combination. Warden/Scout will learn a different skill than Warden/Warrior, and so on.

There are other ways to learn new skills: completed armour sets, titles gained...

In short, there are many ways to customise your character in RoM.

right... however there is only 1 or 2 way that is the right way...

there is no "free stats" that we get. and while we do get a few stat inc on lvl up, the majority of the stats that we get is from ripping the stat from another piece of gear to add to the one that we want. (for more details see the video that Yrcanos posted, or if you still have more question afterwards, just ask for more details).

if you are wondering about how to stat your toon, see the post of this thread (other posts have some more good info too if you want to read that).
