Your definition of 'fun' and RoM

Why do you play RoM? What is your motivation? What makes you enjoy playing ROM? I'm curious as to what sorts of players this game is currently attracting.

There are no wrong answers to this where we will clearly have different perspectives and needs to meet our 'fun' demands. Some are the... 'I like to smash bosses with little to no strats needed'. Whereas others are the complete opposite... 'I like bosses that are strat heavy that can't simply be burned.' Or... 'I like to try the hardest instance possible' vs. 'I enjoy running low level dungeons'. Etc..

Why I continue to play has changed throughout the years. I used to enjoy the group raids taking down the hardest bosses...but now, not so much. Really, I haven't done any instances for a while now and that is 20% due to the high level playerbase mentality of 'needing' to hit some sort of DPS threshold, 50% to the game makers on current general dungeon mechanics, and 30% due to not having as much time anymore. As a result, I'm more interested in features like:

- The occaisional siege war. I rather like going against unknown components as to what they will do. Humans are much harder to predict than any 'A/I' that is typically offered in this game. Their patterns of playstyle can change and adapt as well. Countering those changes becomes a good challenge in itself.

- Taking down random mobs in the game and then finding cards! Some know I got quite the collection. :D I find this relaxing of sorts too when compared to others watching some silly drama TV show.

- Doing non-daily quests for leveling. This doesn't last long though as I'm usually either out of quests or at max character level quickly.

- Improving my character through improved gear and stats...sort of. I've become MUCH more lax on this though. The plussing process is just...rediculous and that alone has significantly changed my definition of 'fun' with RoM. I'm more likely to just buy something off AH.

- Able to play the game for free (although I paid for diamonds looong ago), yet able to get most diamond content from other sellers if needed.

- Social aspect where able to text chat with others and listen in on other people through voice chat devices.

- There is no real 'end' to this game (compared to board games).

How about you?

We are DOOMED!!! we could be soulmates!!! but you still can't match Rustyx  still think alike

For me the occasional siege, upgrading our castle, social aspect is great and helping guildies to grow and get better really makes it fun for me.

I play it for the stress!

I still think ROM is one of the most conceptually amazing games out there.... unfortunately, it would need a reboot to live up to its potential. :S

Siege is either too easy or too difficult, there are just not enough guilds anymore.

Running dungeons can be fun, using a voice program makes it more so.... you get to hear the nerd rage lol

I have been fiddling around with crazy class combinations but like the OP mentioned, the plussing jewels put a damper on trying to gear. They are absolutely atrocious, fail fine but drop? :cursing: I have spent way more $ than I would like to admit on this game.

The #1 aspect of this game is the community. Most of us have been playing together for years so we are in it for the long haul.

New players are not flocking to this game, mostly because most of the online reviews are 4+ years old and the newer ones are all negative. So how about rewarding the people who do play this game. Say a pom event, TP in mirrorworld, a weekly jewel plussing event. It should be just as easy as a bi-montly 140% diamond sale.

I have a few dwarves that I dress for fun  I do have one that I play a little.. they look so sad when they die :(

Way back when (even before the days of Swagg) this game was fun. There were events on a regular basis rewards of useful items. The game could be played and enjoyed by everyone. No instance required spending hundreds or thousands of real world money to complete. You did not have to complete a quest line stretching for years to get to an area or have enough quests to enjoy the game. You could gear up from the drops you got from killing mobs outside of the instances. There were quests everywhere and you didn't have to follow a quest line to play the game you could enjoy it anyway you wanted. Not in a mindless lock step. Every thing you did had meaning in the game and helped your toon. If you wanted to play solo you could if you wanted to play in a pair you could if you wanted to play in a large group you could. A couple of strong players in the group or solo could achieve almost anything and have fun doing it. But that has ended.

The game had degenerated into a overly complicated expensive mess. The last time I saw any statistics it showed that a vast majority of gamers want to be able to have the option to play a game solo coming in and out at their own convenience some times for only a few minutes never having to hook up in a group to be able to play. To join groups when they wanted not because they have to. The only ones left in ROM are chained to groups with little or no freedom to play the game in any way but the lock step format ordained. There is no longer a place for solo players in ROM. Without a large number of solo players no game can survive. Which is why ROM is dying.

This game is the exact opposite of a fun open game It is closed and exclusive. There are people every where who are willing to help but the cost even with their help is excessive. The drops in the outside world are totally worthless when have you seen a player using a weapon or gear that dropped form a mob out side of an instance, the only decent drops are in instances that require huge well funded groups of elite players who followed the quest lines for years and have large chunks of time to enter the instances that make up the vast majority of the new worthwhile portions of the new areas. Even the drops there can not be moved between players without the use of very expensive ABLs which cost real world money. The newest area can not be even entered without completing a quest line. Once you get there via a portal from a friend if you didn't there isn't even a quest for you to complete'

The purpose of the game currently is to weed out and eliminate players. It is a deliberate winnowing process. Requiring those who want to play to spend huge amounts of money be a member of the elite few who can are members of a group who can go into the new instances and follow in lock step a complicated quest line or leave. There is no place for anyone who just wants to come in for a short time play around a while and make some progress. I think that the game is being run to get down to a sole survivor who will be declared the winner because they are the only one left.

I joined because of quest-oriented console games like Fable and Fallen Angel 2. I enjoy questing games where you progress and build your character. MMOs have level-cap and content expansions, unlike games that have a "Congratulations you are at the end" sort of finality. I started playing in Dec 2010. Chapter 3 was fairly new. At that time every level was harder to reach than the last. 51 to 52 took over a week for me.

Then it all changed. Third class options and the Coast of Opportunity was born. One day's worth of Front Line dailies will move you from 50 to 51. Two days and you are at 52, JUST FROM THE DAILIES!!!! Why is a level 50 daily worth more XP and TP than a level 70 daily?

Swagg was running a podcast in those days and he took a section out my email complaint to reply to. He said it was because it gives your friends a chance to get into the instances quicker, and instances are the "meat and potatoes" of the game. I disagree. Quests are the meat, killing mobs is the potatoes, and building gear is the vegetables that make you stronger. The instances are the chocolate cake sitting on the kitchen counter that your mom won't let you have until you finish your vegetables.

I have 4 toons at 98/98, and it gets easier to make every level rather than harder. I used to have a sense of accomplishment with every level. Now, I have a sense of disappointment. The addition of things like Cenedrils and Hall of Earth are intended to keep endgamers busy. Instead, I wish RW would spend their time building quests in expansive zones that take weeks instead a single weekend to get the two or three levels out of the zone.

I tend to be a lone-wolf type player. I have a guild, and help lower level guildies through the game. I also have a small group of friends that I run instances with, but I am not here for the instances or the comradery. I want a challenge in what Haleen (anyone remember her?) called a 'game of infinite progression'.

I enjoy the community, Ghetto chat is a blast

I enjoy questing and working on my gear

I enjoy helping new people....I wish there were more of them...

I do agree with Grumpdaddy, that they made levelling too quick and easy, such that people rush to the cap then get bored and quit. That being said though they do need to do something about the level 60 levelling hump around Limo where a lot of folks run out of quests that part is a little weak.

upgrades... upgrades.. upgrades...
and running instances... dont care which ones.. all i rly wanna do when im online :)

but tbh.. if it wasnt for the rommunity probably wouldnt be still playing no offense, but being i can only play a few hours a day.. and horribly impatient.. this game is a burden on my wallet :)

everytime i quit for a few weeks, months, i always poke my head back in.. and the people pull me back in all over again...

there is def not many people that still play from my glory days, but i still cling to the hope GF makes the game cheaper to play... and maybe advertise some more and get some new blood into the game

Chatting with friends.

Siege War.

Clearing instances.

In that order.

SW and broken instances have been kinda boring, so I've resorted to talking smack recently *sigh*

But hey, 2nd boss barrier in Vale of Rites didn't bug last night, which is nice...

Looks like what is mainly keeping peeps interested currently is the social capabilities this game offers. I can only assume that those that have no issues complaining in other threads, yet refrained from saying anything here, are still playing because of this aspect as well.
