At first as every mage, you will depend on fire, so Flame, Fireball, Purgatory Fire, Fire Knowledge will get most of TP, followed by Elemental Catalysis (5 min CD, adds 20% magical damage for 20 sec at first, and then at level 65 it adds 50% reduction of casting time as well).

At some point most of mages start puting points into Wind Knowledge, Lighting (must level it to least L15 in the order to get another great AOE) and Thunderstorm (real reason you leveled lighting.)

Once you have level both main and secondary, you have to get elites (best place would be Heffner Camp, old beg quests.)

Cursed Fangs by itself is low hit attack, but once you level 30 and have Fang Ritual (15M buff), your CF will do some nice damage, and it's spamable.

Kiss of a Vampire is nice elite where you get 10% of HP back for succesful hit.

You can read more about this class combination at RunesDB.

Mage stating is mostly as much of Inteligence and Magical Attack as you can add, followed with Stamina. Some mages add Wisdom as well, which adds more mana points and ads to accuracy.

For lower levels just quest gear with couple pieces from AH (dirtu stated with yellow stats), at level 55 go for Elemental Flame set if you can (3 pieces are enough) and Void Staff. I still use Vahtos' Spell set on my toon, because it adds 15% magical power overall and has nice crit rate.

ATM I have Raksha Staff (thanks to friend) that I Teired to T9 and have +16 atm. That is close to 6K mDamage, lot's of crits and mAtack.

as M/R there are a few elite skills you will want to save TP for. First of all, your elite Cursed Fangs will be a high priority skill, but for cursed fangs to be useable in any way, you will have to MAX your Fang Ritual (level 35 elite). dont forget, you can also use wand/dagger combo, which in some cases is better than a 2-H staff. best of luck from a fellow m/r :)

ouch - care to share why?

I'm very happy the way this class is working... at the moment still have 10 levels to add to CF and it's already doing damage close to fireball, but without 3 sec CD. Ability to cast it while running makes it very useful for fast run/higher level mobs.

I know many would switch to R/M for SW, where you place different traps and don't depend on buildings to be able to do so.

don't say aberrations, mate.
M/R is an awesome mage. squishy, but has very good damage.
you probably meant r/m, which in pve is not a strong combo, but i am sure there are people who say otherwise.

It's a mage. The weapon he has is a staff. Does look like a spear. Pretty sure the skin is from the Black Runic Staff that drops in clops.

The reason yoman says you should choose a different class is that the real advantages of being m/r are dual wielding and faster casting spell. Since dual wielding can give equal or more mdmg than a 2h staff ( including runes) only if you tier really high ( to make up for costs of plussing and drilling) dw is not a real advantage. Good thing is they can have two recon though ( although recon vi + tranquility powder + Mage set skill should be enough with a good tank).
M/r don't really cast faster either because in burn phase, all mages can get about 0.5 sec flame. And the faster casting speed does not stack with ancient spirit water. True asw share cd with house maid pot... But that's a negligible advantage seeing most of your damage you do it during burn.
Lastly instant casts are good mostly for trash because again... With 0.5sec flame with no gcd there are no other skill better than flame.

That's a Savage Staff he's carrying, which leads me to believe it's a Priest of some kind.http://www.runesdatabase.com/item/212665/savage-staff

To be honest, M/R is almost strictly a PVP/Siege class, due to the fact their DPS is not so great during the burn phase with current game mechanics. I have an endgame-statted M/R/W, and the M/W side absolutely trounces the M/R in PVE runs. I have full weapons on both sides, too; for M/W I have a +16 t9 Puppet Queen, while on M/R I have a +16 t9 tosh hard wand (forget the name atm...fail lol) and a +16 t9 ptk, and while more damage could be had if I upgrade the dagger (and I will eventually lol), currently with full runes it's sitting at ~8300 damage as M/W vs. ~10k damage as M/R. Even with the damage difference, however, M/W kills the M/R in PVE dps; instants don't really matter either, since you can just thunderstorm as M/W to hit quite a bit and do more damage instead of single hit of cursed fangs.

PVP, however, is a completely different story, and this is where M/R crushes most other mage combos (M/P notwithstanding, that's just a great combo in general). Get your elite to raise cursed fangs damage, get 2 tiered weapons, and watch the insanity. I can take out quite a few players with ~100k hp in less than a second with a 2x cursed fang spam, priests and druids excluded; wisdom stacking all day for them lol. If you play it right, and chain your immunes/silences, you can also take out those pesky P/k as well. It's true, you will be squishy as all get out, but if you play effectively and use your skills to your advantage, you can def. put a hurting on people in siege/arena. Having a 35% casting increase with your pet out doesn't hurt trying to cast a flame, either.

That being said, I would recommend having a Mage main with a secondary for each specialty you would like to do. M/R and M/Wd is PVP. M/P and M/D are good PVE and great at PVP too. M/W and M/S are the current kings of DPS in burst phase, with M/P coming in there as well (haven't played M/P in some time, but EU says it, and they are ahead of us).

source: Have played an endgame M/P, M/W, M/R, M/D, M/Wd, and M/S. The last 5 within the last month too...need to stop rerolling lol
