k/w gear and skill focus

So I decided to make another character which is a w/k. However the k/w elite skills seem pretty good DPS for a knight. Since the knight can equip two handed axes with the level 20 elite should I not level any shield based skill and stick with a 2-h axe?

2-handed axes are usually used for leveling while 1h+shield is usually used when tanking. It becomes personal choice on what you want to use. Since you are leveling right now..just hold off until you reach a higher level to put in to for shield skills.

Well I am not going to use the knight side to tank since the w/k elites are made for tanking and such. However I would like to use the knight side as DPS when needed since the elites are based on DPS

If you really want to Dps... Stick to w/k. I am not familiar with w/k elite skills but besides the ability to wear plate, I can't recall anything that is for tanking.

K/w only has the weapon mastery that is somehow related to dps. The rest... K/w is a tank. Higher dps than most other knights, but still a tank.

No. Completely the other way around. K/W is a tank not DPS. W/K is a DPS and it's elites make it an off-tank at best when statted for tank. It is incapable of being a main tank in an end game instance.
