Champion/Mage?

I've seen and read a lot of threads about champion/warlock, but I don't like to do what everyone else is doing, so please don't bother to suggest it thanks.
I wanted to try champion/mage, but I'm sorta new to this and I don't want to massively screw it up and regret wasting time. Is there anyone that can give me a tip or two so that I know what NOT to do?

Normally I play tank in most games, but from what I read, Knights got nerfed in their ability to draw the mobs to them with just ruins a tank. Then I read that champions could draw aggro pretty well, but as I said earlier I don't like to play normal roles. I thought I might try champion mage and see how that went.

In fact, I am holding back on choosing what ablities to level until I meet another champion. I am using hammers though I assume. At least as a champion I feel that 2H Hammers would be the best path.

So any tips for a new player to keep him from screwing up his character massively?

until you are lvl 50+, any mess you make on that toon wouldn't even be considered a screwup...before 50, you can pretty much make a new toon and be at the same place you were within days...

play around with some combos, find out what you like...

yeah, ik this is prolly the least helpful response that some1 is gonna post in this thread, but whatever...don't know enough about champs besides ch/p to give advice...
my r/p can outdps r/m. your name is stupid.

mages should stack dex. word.

Just looking at some of the elites, that's probably some of the best advice. They are pretty complicated and rely heavily on reaction to specific occasions from what I can tell. That's not to say it isn't a good combo, but it will definitely take some testing on your part to see what works for you and what you are capable of handling. Like Cike said, testing it out at lower levels isn't going to hurt you at all really.

As for weapons, pretty much outside of Ch/R, all champions will use 2-h hammers. Focus on that weapon mastery, runecraft diversion, runecraft solidify, some on shield form, and probly some in rune pulse. Other attacking skills that you find useful like maybe heavy bash or electrocution. The elites will be up to you to decide what's worth it, I have no experience with Ch/M and I'm not sure how many people have in general, so test em out and see what's good haha.

ch/m is probably one of my favorite classes in game!
That high energy barrier is so freaking OP it's not even funny and elemental rampage? don't even get me started lol

The class can have semi-decent dps and you can still stat real tanky. The key to that combo is just managing all the 10-15sec buffs you get. If you want a higher dps ch/r will win everytime.
But if your wanting to tank main you should consider ch/warrior. They may not have the most useful skills but they should pull aggro close to ch/m and at 70/70 get another 100% pdef making them the ultimate tank imo.

I agree fully with Bakken. Champion/Mage is probably the 2nd best AoE damage you can get from Champion/? and doesn't do awful dps.

Energy Barrier is a ridiculous buff. You can use it on gates during siege or on yourself if you want to play it safe. They are decent in PvE with this skill but not many of their other skills do that much for the class. Key Rescue also helps a ton for dealing with rogues and rough bosses.

I played a C/M for quite some time, never got the 60 elite but I've heard the range on the AoE is 200, aka the same range as Flame. It plays well as a support class and can often defy death more than any other champion. 2-H Hammer is definitely the way to go.

Hmm, I'm going to disagree with the assumption that 2h hammer is best for C/M. Compare it to 1h + talisman:

2h Hammer:
- more damage & DPS
- budget, don't need stats/plussing for tali

1h Hammer + Tali:
- extra stats from Tali
- extra hatred rune on Tali (if you're C/M and not tanking.. why are you C/M?)
- DPS from 1h isn't far behind 2h. Only have access to the outdated runesdatabase at moment, so comparing AC dropped weapons: Runic Hammer 1h = 1127 DPS (3.0 speed), Runic Heavy Hammer 2h = 1253 DPS (3.2 speed) = 11% more DPS on 2h. I expect newer weapons will be similar.
- slightly faster hits from 1h. This means more chances to trigger Forge & Chain Drive abilities. The difference is usually like 3.0 vs. 3.2 or 3.6, so this is a very small difference. But it favors 1h.

Of course, if you're C/R/M like me, then you want 1h for C/R as well.

Bottom line: 2h = 10-12% more base damage. 1h = more agro, stats, etc.

What about Elemental Rampage (lvl 60 elite) -%defense debuff?
Anyone tried it?
How high can it be upgraded?
How many percent does the -defense debuff give?

I've been debating with myself of 2h vs 1h/tali and while another hatred X would help a lot I believe the dps increase and the like 10kpatk/1kcrit add so much more to my dps I think I pull better with the 2h. I mean dang that's like 22 high patk stats that's kind of hard to make up for even with the extras from tali.

If we didn't have insane rogues to battle with aggro I would definitely use the tali for the extra stats/mdef though
