Damage VS. DPS

Ok, I am new to the warden and actual melee DPS'ing (i have always been a scout or a knight). I am looking for confirmation on something that seems obvious, but with this game could be more complicated due to technical wording they have given.

My question is concerning the damage of a weapon compared to the dps, as the title implies. When looking for a weapon are you going to be looking for something with high dps or high damage? Pretty much all skills read that they do "x % of main hand weapon DPS." But with skills such as two-handed weapon mastery, they are giving you more weapon damage in your character screen but obviously not appearing on your weapon.

Short and simple, I want to know if this main hand weapon DPS is the number being listed on your weapon (damage/speed) or the damage that appears in your character screen divided by speed of weapon.

EX: Axe has 1000dmg with 3 spd giving it 333 DPS with weapon mastery it is 1500 dmg meaning 500 dps. It would just make sense to me if the skills were all based off that second number, otherwise the weapon mastery skill is pointless and all raw damage boost is pointless.

I merely want confirmation that the second number in the example would be the one used not the weapon's dps alone without skill or stat boosts from armor.

You would be correct in surmising that it is your total damage/(modified) weapon speed. The actual weapon stats don't change - for example if you take an attack speed pot and have a chest piece with a +damage ghost stat, this wouldn't affect the stats of an Axe that you are looking at on the AH, nor does it if you have it in your grubby little mitt.

But masteries, etc., do certainly work.

Trust me, I'm a professional :D

The formula for melee damage is based on DPS, nowhere is damage mentioned without being divided by weapon speed, so you can safely assume that you want the highest DPS, (YMMV). I am not a scout, nor do I play one on TV, but somewhere in the back of my mind was an uncertainty that maybe the formula for ranged damage was different....but then again I assume that KatalanOrk would know and would have mentioned it. I say YMMV because there are certain situations or circumstances where you may want a faster weapon or a slower harder hitting one.

Ranged indeed still has total damage in the equation unlike melee. But even when melee did have it as well, It only ever was significant if the DPS was the same. Higher DPS means more damage, ranged or melee.
