Mage Questions

so i see a bunch of mages running around with 100k of HP unbuffed and rank fairly high in magic attack
how do they do that?!
i checked some charplan and if i stat all stam/hp thats 100k of HP but where does the magic attack come from?

any advice for gearing? for PVP
limited budget because im free to play

making a war/mage and was told to ask mages.

For starters, as a mage, NEVER stat with stam/hp.

The general rule for mage statting is 6/3/3 or 6/4/2

What I mean by that is, all six stats you put on your gear should have Intelligence, and 3 of those six should be int/magic attack, and 3 should be int/stamina (or 4 int/mattk and 2 int/stam)

I have just under 102k HP unbuffed, but that's because I've sworn but the general statting rule of 6/3/3. The reason I choose that is because I'm a M/W. Being that a Mage/Warrior is a burst class, and given that my level 70 Elite gives my INT a bonus based on my STAM and STR, I go for the 6/3/3 for more stam, as opposed to the 6/4/2 for added magic attack. I also go 6/3/3 because I like to challenge myself and solo as much content as I can. Unbuffed I'm at just under 118k magic attack, and with my housekeeper buffs, etc, I have absolutely no issues.

This is all from a PvE perspective though. I'm not a huge fan of PvP in general. Nothing against siege or anything, I just don't enjoy PvP in any game, so as far as if Mages should stat a different way in PvP, idk. However I used to PvP alot as a M/K and did quite well. (Also statted 6/3/3 back then too)

So... you're saying you have 102k hp and 118k matk completely unbuffed? Could you please post a screen shot of your gear to see how this is even possible, I'm sure you know what you are talking about im just confused as to how you can get that high of matk without any buffs, having that high of hp.

Inferno, as for statting a mage for PvE the most common is 2int/stam and 4int/matk per piece, many mages are now attemping to go 5 and one and some even pure 6int/matk on every piece, dpsers don't need hp for PvE. When it comes to PvP there are multiple ways you can chose to stat, depends if you want to deal high dmg quickly or be tankier. I myself use PvE accessories, then for my 7 piece honor set I statted them all 4stam/hp and 2stam/def.... While buffed in sw with this I get 370k hp and 110k matk. All depends what you feel most comfortable with when it comes to pvp.

I see that now, but I'm still curious as too what tier/plus/runes you had to use to pull that off, though, I do see that alot of crit rate was sacrificed so that explains a decent amount.

A lot of his gear is t8 and he is running with full aoth myst and belah mage set. This absolutely kills your crit and is not worth it in my opinion. I personally run with full myst set but use the 79 quest earring along with pom pants/belt/gloves over the belah and get a decent 72% crit ub with my crappy t6 gear. I am currently working on re statting and re tiering it all to t7 :D

Aoth vs Crit depends on your class buffs IMO. I get alot of intel increases on my class so 8% more intel turns into alot of mattck for me. I only have a 72% crit rate with my aoth set however. When I swapped to Aoth I kept my crit set for a while and did alot of tests. The mattck = more damage for me than the extra crit. However that may be changing as crit pieces get better and better. I would love to see an updated version of the aoth set in a new instance.

Tuesday, April 22nd 2014, 4:32pm

My Gear is:

Full Aoth Set (T6 +16, Aoth Necklace is +18 for the bonus mCrit)
Full Bela-H Set (T8 +16, Farutors Pants are +17 for the bonus mDam)
Full Beth-H Set (T8 +18 Chest for the added mDam, the rest T7, with a couple pieces being +17 just because)
And an Mattk based level 85 ring and cape (both T8 +16)

All of my gear is 4x Rune Slotted with the following runes in every piece:

Advance X (Int/mattk)

Sage IX (int/wis)

Block X (stam/def)

Potential X (+Attributes)

I use these runes for both the addition of int/mattk and the addition of stam and str increase (although the str increase is minimal, only coming from the Potential X)

The Mage/Warrior level 70 elite gives me a passive boost to my Stamina, based on how high of a level my Brute Strength..which I have at level 85) IN ADDITION TO boosting my INT by half of my STAM, and half of my STR. Also note that this is not a buff based on your base stats. ALWAYS cast 'Wisdon and Bravery' AFTER you have already summoned your pet, and used all your attribute buff pots/skills. This will boost the buffing potential of 'Wisdom and Bravery' exponentially

My weapon is a T12 Hoson's Spine +20 with the following runes:

Miracle X

Burst X

Curse X

Reconciliation VIII

My thinking (and experience) has been along the lines of what Mrpushpop is saying. My statting and gear choices have been based around what I do as a Mage Primary.

I use the hard mode sets for the set bonuses for the boost in base mDam. I chose to +20 and T12 my Hoson's Spine as opposed to a Gengu Seal for the boost in over 1K INT and over 2K MORE MATTK instead of MACC.

While my base crit is sacrificed, it benefits my base boost in mDam. My "constant" crit buffs (Mage/Warriors get two) put me at the 70% that every mage uses as a standard, and my two crit buffs are both at level 75, so I still have 10 more levels to go for each. Each level raised for those crit buffs grants an addition 0.02% to my crit. So when both are max level, that'll put me at a "constant" mCrit of a little over 71%. While this is generally a "frowned upon" crit rate to be at, again, I run as a Mage primary, not a Warrior primary.

Being a M/W while running instances focuses on the burst phase. My self buffs (including my level 66 pet) puts me over 60K INT and over 300k MATTK. Again, that's self buffed. It would be more so if feel like dragging out my P/S, P/R, and Warlock for the MATTK buff, mCrit buff, and 6% Attribute increases respectively.

I never have a problem critting, and my statting and gearing methods have not failed me yet.

I am also still tweaking my gear a bit, adding more int/stam and int/matt PoM and Horror stats as I obtain them

At first I found it hard to believe that those stats existed. But tier 8 gear and those runes.. Can understand it completely.. xD be interesting to see a scrut from grotto hm though with that crit rate. Cause I find even with 78% UB as r/m I rarely crit :3 excluding boss 6 ofc

Have you run belah or goh where the crit resist is much higher than easily cleared bethh?

Our Mages max out crit because the 70% crit rate cap is a myth. If you can crit on the majority of your flame spam by having say 80% crit rate and still have 100k mattck unbuffed then toss the aoth out the window cause 70% will fail a lot in something like grotto. +20's did help aoth holders make up some crit.

The real way to find out is to borrow a guildies set for a test run through say 1st boss multiple times with each set. Now thats expensive on your PVE servers but still may be worth it. It is about time for me to re-evaluate my crit rate again to see if aoth set is holding me back.

Thank you for the great explanation Acypcar. Another thing I forgot to think of as to why your HP is up there is that Brute Strength gives a Stamina passive. That explains quite a bit as when I swap to M/W from M/WD I see that I have 111k matk and 86k hp, this with all yellow stats, being 4int/matk 2int/stam... and as Dpack mentioned I'm one of those mages using full crit sets, so my crit rate is 6.6k = 78.2% unbuffed. Even in grotto, I still crit quite often I find, to make up for a bit of loss matk. (Without the belth hm dmg pieces, and only a +18 staff, my mdmg is at 14k unbuffed still, so not too bad either.

cool thanks for the replies.
The tier 8 gear is crazy good but i doubt ill ever get that
might consider pulling a full pom set but i know with my money ill only t5 it and t6 at the most.
plussing is nearly impossible for me (never bought dias) so im hoping for at least plus 6 on it.

So my question is does +3 t5 pom gear work in SW?
ill definitely use the 3 intel/stam and 3 intel/matt statts
Reni's AH is dry in cloth gear and mage accessories so thats why im considering to make my own.

I really just want to aim for 80-90k hp buffed and high enough magic attack so that my electric stream (w/m elite) kills in SW
by buffed i mean mem food and heros (no money for anything else)

i also ready somewhere that 40k magic attack is good enough for SW but my mage has 60k magic attack and he's not too great

mmm, idk about 40k matk... Like I said I don't hit too hard cause im a tanky build for sw, but I still get 110k matk for it in my pvp gear. With 40k matk i don't see that working too well ^.^ (I'm only 61kmatk in pvp gear unbuffed however)

It kinda depends on what league you are in. 40k Matt works fine in the sub 750 point level.

To be honest, I don't think most mages need 100k hp unbuffed. Xaldyn does because, as he mentioned, he likes to solo. If you don't, or if your soloing is stuff like farming Grotto easy, you don't need 100k UB.

For the average mage, 80k or even less, is enough.

I'm sitting on 83k no buffs, no pet and 113k ma in my Hoson's/pom/crit memento acc set. That gets me to 120k hp with just hero and grassland, and that's plenty for Grotto hm. Now, for siege, really, a mage needs pvp gear- at least some. In that case you'll be getting your extra stam and defense from the pvp gear, and you don't need to put it on your pve gear. In my crappy, completely non-optimal pvp "gear" of aoth salvation set and stam/def/hp wings, I buff for siege to around 260k, and while I don't recommend that setup to anyone, and am working on real pvp gear, it works okish.

Also, in general, m/w will be better for siege than w/m simply due to more ranged skills- with some exceptions, obviously. What's your third class? Really, what we need to know is what you want to do in your gear. Are you looking to PvE in it? Or just pvp?

Holler at me, Fann on Reni.

Oh, and @Pushpop, dagnabit, the 72% crit thing isn't a myth, it's just ridic outdated. KBN hm data, dude. It was empirically tested out, very thoroughly, at the time. Times change.

I don't stat for HP, I just happen to have that much HP from my gear. My gear contains not a single int/hp or stam/mattk. Strictly Int/Mattk and Int/Stam. I suppose if I really wanted to go hardcore with my gear I'd change out the Block X's and Potential X's with Madness and Destruction runes..but meh..I do just fine with what I have.

Again, I stayed 6/3/3 statting for the boost in STAM for 'Wisdom and Bravery' being that M/W is a more or less a burst class, and I felt I should stat as such being that I didn't sell out and switch to W/M like most mages lol

Hasn't failed me yet.
