As m/w I use advance/madness/judge/sage.

Unbuffed destruction gives more matk, but when buffed in a raid with wedding food and hero madness gives you a higher matk. As for mage sets lots of people like different things, personally I use complete Proof of myth sets, with a grotto hardmode chest piece and quest necklace.

You and i can be friends. You are the FIRST OTHER MAGE ive seen and talked to besides myself to see reason and get rid of your destruction runes instead of your madness runes. Everyone always looks at the "more mattk unbuffed" and doesn't look at the big picture of getting more mattk from buffing off an int rune when you need it most, in a buffed instance run.

also, regarding proof vs instance gear:

I am of an opposite mind as most of the comments will be here, in that, I too use hard mode instance sets. I can only assume the reason other mages go for proof sets is for the added crit. But with my gear for example, using full bethH set, full belaH set, and aoth set, plus my two crit "constant" buffs i get as a mage warrior, im right at 70% crit, which is (debatable by those who refuse to see reason lol) the recommended amount of crit a mage "needs." Especially a mage/warrior.

You can also use charplan addon to compare gear sets to save you from number crunching yourself. It allows you to put stats and runes, plus the gear and display the resulting stats. It also allows you to compare 2 sets of gear and see the difference in every stat value.

Unfortunately RW is obsessed with proofs and that gear is generally better, but I don't believe that it's so much better that you'll be useless without it.

I have zero proof gear and I am far from useless.

Do I use proof stats? Absolutely.

Do i provide viable dps without any proof gear at all? You better believe absolutely lol

One thing about charplan though.... Currently its max level is 87, but you can change this by entering your addons folder in your RoM folder, opening up the charplan addon, and opening cp_unit (it's a Lua file) with notepad, and changing the max level to 90 (4th line). Then, it should calculate your stats correctly.

my charplan has 90 in it, I updated it a few days ago though, so I don't know if that matters.

For me I use proof gear because of the crit/ma.attk combo. Not much gear comes with this combo, besides proof gear and some quest gear. For instance the capes for the quest and proof are the only ones with both crit AND ma.attk. Bootss always seem to have both. Shoulders, legs, and helm (I think, cant log in atm) have both and the full set of shoulders, belt, legs, give crit and mdmg, making it a good set, esp with the newest set out. Then add a HM chest for dmg. Then Since the helm has ma.attk/crit, I paired it with the gloves (since almost no gloves have ma.attk/crit that I have seen) because the gloves give crit, and the set bonus give ma.attk. Then of course as many ma.attk/crit earrings/rings with the Aoth set (till I get the new one... whenever that is)

This set up with good weapon runes puts me at about 74-75% unbuffed, which m/w gets two crit buffs, and then house buff for crit. The gear set up gives a lot of bonus m.attk, while keeping crit high to be able to still use Aoth. But that is just me.


I currently use destruction runes, but that is because I have been lazy in swapping them out and my swap gear isn't done yet. The way I look at it for m/w if you don't have swap gear, use the destructions for the str bonus for when using wisdom and bravery... after you have a swap set, go madness. Or if you are planning on a swap set, start cycling out your destructions as you can.
