Welcome to Runes of Magic!

Ranged physical is Scout, ranged magic would be Mage, Priest, Druid, and Warlock. Mage is strongest, generally, but Warlock and Druid can be so much more than support classes.

Melee classes are Knight (tank, mostly), Rogue, Warrior, Warden, and Champion.

Note that RoM is a dual-class game, so you can reap the benefits of two classes, along with elite skills that can be gained from level 15 through level 50 (every five levels), then levels 60 and 70.

There are three races, Human, Elf, and Dwarf. Each race has Classes which are unique to them. Check during character creation. Note that Dwarves cannot be Scouts, period.

Have fun!

My advice is not to invest any real money into your first try. Wait until you get a feel for which class or class combo you enjoy.

There will be a lot of opinions expressed, so here is mine:
Start with an elven scout and when you get the option to pick a second class go Warden.

Note: A Dwarven Champion is a Tank/melee character with some good ranged abilities.
Govinda P/W/K/M 100x4 :pump:
Wl/R/M/Ch 100x4 :borg:
Wd/W/S 100/100/100
W/M 100/100 Glass Cannon: oh gawd, not again :pinch: ... and numerous others Semi-retired :pillepalle:

I would suggest rogue as ranged DPS, especially rogue/mage. Scout been nerfed for several years, and while it is recently got a decent boost, it is still arguably worse than rogue. That said, if you do play scout, then scout/warden is the way to go. Has to be elf for that combo.
-- Rustyx --- 92R / 92S / 92M on Reni (Guild KnightShift). Yes, running the new FOTM R/M, cause I am not elf enough to be WD/S.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

depends on the context. in terms of pve, then s/wdn will easily outdps a r/m at range. in pvp, you are looking at a more equal comparison.
my r/p can outdps r/m. your name is stupid.

mages should stack dex. word.

Rogue/scout is an excellent dps by using the rogue skills you always get a critical with your first hit. You can start the bleed with vampire arrow so all damage is magnified before you even reach melee range. You can go from hide to critical hit to hide without ever being detected. It has all the dps of a scout when you add in the critical hits plus higher hit rates and critical rates and a much higher ability to survive in combat when you add in the dodge and evade skills. Scout / warden when you add the elite skills can also be a good crowd control but still has survival problems.
