Hiya gangy RoM folks! I was away for a while (PC issues; with the latest takeover of RoM I couldn't install for about a year). Anyway, I came back to Taborea to find a lot of things different and a lot of things the same.
Different: Can't buy much off AH with in-game gold - diamonds are crazy priced (as always) and rubies? Rubies - forget about it!
Now, when I left, the trend was that diamonds were going up and up in price, and that has basically continued, as expected. What I didn't really expect was that the value of rubies would change from "free with diamonds" to "let's see what the best rate to convert from diamonds to rubies is so we can get enough to stat / plus a toon's gear." I even know folks who refuse to get new gear and just clean and re-stat old gear because plusing gear has become impossible (note: it has always been NAY IMPOSSIBLE with NPC stones, so that hasn't changed at least).
Another difference I noticed is how quickly you get squished, even on easy mode, by at-level bosses. I mean, I used to be able to solo just about everything up to Sardo with my toon... maybe I was "uber" back then and didn't know it? I was ranked in the top 100, I guess, on patt... but that isn't so high as to be ridiculously OP. Now: squish in higher level instances. Seems I should have been born a dwarf... lol. The point being, at 82, even partly statted, I can't even begin to run instances for my level. Which kind of turns me off. At the same time, an "uber" dwarf can basically solo the same instances. Now, I am not saying "nerf the dwarves." I am really just pointing out that it used to be different - insomuch as "at level" easy runs were concerned. (I understand "hard" is hard, etc... and needed a team).
A third difference is the gold sellers. Now, when I left, they were all over Varanas, sitting and spamming, and generally being the annoyance they are. Now? Now there are only one or two, world shouting from who knows where, for days on end. I really don't know which is better... the occasional trip to Varanas and having to see them, or having them constantly spamming world. I go back to my original idea for "banning" these folks: allow the players a 1/24 hr 1 hour mute on anyone who talks in world. We can self-police and mute them as they happen, if we wish. And while there is potential for abuse (muting non-gold spammers), unless people are really annoying it probably won't end up that way (but on the plus side, people who bicker in world will finally be forced to bicker in private conversations instead). That is it; just a WC 1 hour ban "chit" given to every player. Making the effects stackable will ensure gold spammers don't see the light of WC again for a while and leave us alone.
World bosses with DAYS cool-down cycles? Seriously. Wow. And a requirement for the elites is to kill them several times? Wow. Simply Wow. It is like we have travelled back in time when you had to run every instance to get your elites (then right around the corner you could do spam a mini-game on the coast and do them all in 15 minutes.... lol). I hope new "mini-games" are planned... or at least they will decrease the cooldown cycle on the bosses. Wow.
Things that are the same: Same random memory leaks... lol. After playing for years, I think most of us are used to the random crashes. FYI I am now playing on an AMD 3.4GHz quad core, 8GB ram, 2GB Designated Video Card machine... so, yeh, its not the machine. But you know what? Still love the game enough to play. The people are still great! Which is what I loved most about RoM, I think.
I love the game, have since I started playing. Have always preferred Rogues (HIDE FTW). And still enjoy trudging through instances with my fellows. This thread isn't really a complaint about anything in particular (despite the title, we all know the economy has never been ideal, from the days when diamonds were available on the AH to the days with the diamond NPCs to the current state of affairs). It is more just me saying that I am happy to finally be playing again, and I hope everyone realizes that the "behind the scenes" things have never been ideal. In this instance, I have to learn to live with "hand me downs" from other players, and that is fine.
But I would note to the current "makers" of the game: An economy which relies on the PTP players to create EVERYTHING GOOD ENOUGH TO INSTANCE with in a game is DOOMED to have gold spammers; why? because the basic premise behind the economy is that a few people will supply everything the game needs. And those same folks who would otherwise spend all their in-game gold on WORKING gold sinks, instead hoard it, buy it, trade it, at value cost, to, from and between gold spammers. I find it a little funny that the person running Wartune, a very popular "MMO" (which is complete crap as an MMO), doesn't allow any sort of currency exchanges between players. Why? Because the CEO used to be an illegal gold farmer. LOL. He knows that nothing can stop a private economy driven by exchanges of values from the haves to the have nots (whether the haves acquired it legally or not). The coincidental thing is that players, themselves, are already understanding this (the refusal to sell rubies) and making the game a haves only game. With no viable gold sink options to plus gear, RoM looses out on the FTP player base who simply can't compete. But maybe that is the point? And really, always has been?
Love ya RoM!
ps. If I did have ONE complaint, it would be SNIPE RANGE:60 - seriously? WOW! LOL! a whole 60! What an incredible SNIPING distance! It is almost like I am right on top of the mob when I SNIPE it!
