This isn't a lag issue. It could be a bandwidth issue. It's certainly something to do with these new servers or some sort of bandwidth throttling. Typically though, server-client programs (if they're coded correctly), will simply start dropping the packets after timeout, instead of trying to process them this slowly. Something is not being balanced right for the load on these servers, or there's a setting causing the server to become overwhelmed with packets from each client, and instead of timing them out (Server data mis-match errors) it's continuing to try and process them. Socket timeout on most programs of this scale is 15-30 seconds. RoM's settings have to be 5-10 minutes. Not good.

If it is bandwidth throttling, then the servers should be dropping the connection altogether, not seemingly holding the packets in a queue to process later.

Come on Frogster/Runewaker, this is client-server architecture 101.

EDIT: Are the folks on EU servers having these issues? That should tell you right away if it's a server or a coding issue.

at the time of the crash i personily was atempting to get in when i would join the battle i would disapear - with out the ablityu to typ in guild nor do anytihng elce after a short time i would crash to log in screen when i enterd back in thare was nothing in the battle screen with in a few sec of seein gthis over 20+ people from my guild all crashed but yes this NEED to be fixed after a while in game i eventuily crashed back to load screen and then looked at the battle and all my guild wasnt on as if we never signed up looking back over the list only 3 server were left were thay faught over server but none in which reni vs reni were avalible alos aprinly not when you change chanles you will crash to login screen i dont know what exzactly is going on but frogster has REALY droped the ball on this and its in thare best intrist to find and fix this problem or thay might lose alot of profit - i for on like this game i pay to play reni server NEEDS A masive fix

They seem to have cut down on the number of guilds that can register now; apparently someone stupid decided to edit it during siege, the current registry count is 80 guilds.

It used to be 200 guilds, it has to be some sort of joke by Frogster along with the 36 people registry count.

And now, after siege registration only 69 guilds are registered? Something weird is apparently going on; I'd ask Frogster to explain this one.

Also, I haven't lagged the past 2 days, but the day before maintenance I had hideous lag, awesome how people call you lag hackers though when this problem has been all over the forums for the past 3 days.

Well Seige Reg window cleared at about 9 min after the hour. Still totally blank to me.

Asked our GL to check it on his end. He opened it and we show regged for Seige even though he did not reg us.

Some in guild can see tonights results still. Others can't.

thats the essence of what beta means, is player testing. when you enter siege, knowing it is in beta, you are esentially testing it for them. if it runs good, they should have somewhere to directly report it worked good imho. when it doesnt work as intended, there should also be a way to share that with them. and last but not least the imformation shared from the beta testers, us, should be passed along and assessed for changes to make it a better experience for all. but thats now how this beta works. this beta essentially means this is as far as they care to invest money into it and maybe, at some point, if they get some extra funds for changes in coding, it might be rewrote and come out of beta. but chances are, it will enter a new phase of beta lol. you follow me here?

but as far as the limit to the number of guilds allowed in siege, this was cut down a while back, long while back to cut down on the lag. i never noticed a change when they cut it back then but that was when it started gettin harder to get a spot in siege. as far as them cutting it down again, that may be just what they will have to do, given the current server situation until they can free up the resources needed to run the way it used to. who knows. like it or lump it. ill still register my guild every night. and we will try every night, no matter how ridiculous and absurd it gets. its still fun. for me anyways.

did you suffer a brain injury as well?

same here, got kicked out of game, came back and wasnt in siege, but when i was able to sign us up later on i noticed our points had not dropped. wich they wouldnt have because at the time of dc we were winning, had all towers and thier gate was down. didnt get rewards for it but whatever. we will try again tomarrow.

My guild was totally dropped after siege from the list. When we re-logged we could we others that had played but not ours. I then did a count of guilds in siege and came up with 88 pairs (176 guilds). Total Guilds in siege seems to have been increased.

It has been at 80 for some time. This maybe much of the problem as old servers could not hold that many guilds.


There are 154 guild signed up if my eyes read right today. (added as second edit)

The Guilds in Siege war have not been reduced to 80 as posted by Almondnut.
It is set at 200 at this point in time.
As far as I know, there are no plans to reduce it any lower.
Just hand in there and the IT's are working on it.

I checked on my alt guild and siege is full. Given the fact it is early here the count I have maybe off by a little but it seems the number (200) has been reduced or siege sign up now has a cutoff time.

The 200 number never worked in the past. I understand the company we are now dealing with may have better servers but a massive change like that seems to have gotten us to this thread.

I didn't get any delays during last night's siege, surprisingly. Everything worked when I clicked it. My guildies and the peeps from the opposing guild had lots of delays though.

edit:I am positive at one point last year they cut the number allowed to sign up in half, if 200 is indeed the number you new fms and gms think it is, you better do some research. i remember a post in wich former gm swag discussed that they had indeed cut the number who could register in half to cut down on lag. if that change was removed, this is where this insane lag is coming from in siege. if the search function was working properly i could find the thread. but as im pretty certain of my memory i wont bother with google.

No, if anything they kept it the same or increased it for the thanksgiving patch (y'know the one where siege didn't work for about a week) - http://forum.us.runesofmagic.com/showthread.php?t=66339

By my count it is 154 people registered for siege or 77 concurrent battles, which is down from the 80 they had previously.

The current server issue can't be a bandwidth issue as that would affect every person equally (if anything it would affect the people who don't experience the lag the most as they are pulling more data from the server while they run around to other parts of the map (assuming it doesn't pull all the data for the map at once).
Ping or latency isn't an issue as people are reporting absolutely normal ping response times although actual response from in-game npcs/towers/other players/etc shows otherwise. This is a sign that either the performance of the hard drives/memory isn't capable of supporting the siege and/or the processing power of the servers can't handle siege.

Facts:
  • Patch was put in place on Tuesday, Tuesday night siege had no issues.
  • Wednesday night siege had horrendous lag in the last half of siege (prior to the 11 hour shutdown/migration) which is consistent with someone doing large file move operations under heavy load.
  • Thursday data migration to new servers occured, more resources are allocated to certain zones as they have opened channels in certain areas again. Siege ping times were relatively normal regardless of physical location in relation to the new server farm.


I have a couple questions for the server admin if you could forward these to them
  • Are the new servers under EST or PST?
  • If they are under EST, did you change the in-game time to match how the game times operated previously?
  • Did you also change the backup scripts that you run on the OS outside of the game server application to run at a different time?


The important one is that last question, and if that is the problem, I'll offer consulting at 10k diamonds per hour.

:-) Kelkai; thanks for the script. Wish I had had that last night when my eyes hurt from the rubber-banding. At the end of siege last night my count was much higher than yours on the list. My number most likely is off a bit as i did it quick. Not down to your number though which leads me to wonder what borked the total to so much of a difference between me and you? I do know we did not get a result for my guild as people could see from their out of guild alts we were no longer on the finished list.

Any chance that you guys can look into what is causing this? As time goes by my delay keeps worse. Started at around 5 seconds. I'm up to a full minute with more and more seconds being added with each passing moment... Not to mention that it's a crashfest. Some guildies are just logging in to crash then repeat the process... Beta or not this should not be allowed to happen in a game.

I thought the server move was supposed to be a good thing.

Omfg already!

Govinda here AGAIN! Siege is sucking so badly that I can't even begin to tell you. Fix THIS. Fix it, Fix Fix Fix. It's not freakin rocket science just FIX IT! Tweak it, slap it, kick it around, spit on it, cuss at it whatever you need to do just FIX IT ALREADY! The frustration level cannot be any higher right now. FIX IT!!!!!!! Take it seriously and do something! For reference, 2 years ago when I started this bleeping game this exact same thing occurred, you could set your watch to the start of lag during siege war, so whatever you did to fix that DO IT AGAIN ALREADY!
