Best setup for mage pvp?

Ok, so I have asked around, and heard a variety of opinions.

What do you think is the best setup for mage pvp gear? How many pieces of honor gear, which ones, and stats.

I have heard "use the whole set, all int/stam." I have heard "use the three piece, keep your main set bonus, and stat all stam/hp/def."

I am really leaning towards the three pieces, because it would mean less plussing, too. Now, I am m/wd in pvp, so I get about 50% to pdef, which is nice. So it would make sense to stat stam/def, at least to me. Mages without /wd, it doesn't seem like pdef would be that great an investment. But, is three piece enough of a % damage reduction to be worth it? At any rate, I need to make a decision and just go for it, because I am tired of being a two-hit in siege :/

Thoughts?

I use the 3 piece honor gear, each with 4 x Int/stam and 2 x Stam/HP @ around 200k HP in siege. I get 2 shot by Rogues instead of 1 shot lol, so not a massive difference.

I looked at PPK's M/Wd's. They use proof gear with 3 x Stam/Def and 3 x Stam/Hp, and it seems to work decently with M/Wd's Pdef Buff + K/P 25% Pdef/Mdef, because of how many R/M's there are.

I'm trying to figure out a nice setup for non M/Wd's though. My M/P gets absolutely no Pdef buff whatsoever, so stacking Pdef doesn't seem to be worth it. But 20% damage reduction is definitely not enough against Rogues and Wardens and more honor gear = can't crit in siege, so you kinda nerf your own damage equally to take less damage... And I don't see much benefit in that.

While I am not a mage, I am a warlock and they're semi-similar. In siege I use the 7 piece honor gear set and stat it with stam/intel x2 intel/hp x1 stam/hp x1 intel/matk x 1 and stam/def x1. In siege my matk/crit does hurt, but normally it doesn't matter too much. Patk statted rogues 2-3 hit me (with 260k ish hp) non-patk rogues can take 3-8 hits to kill me. I only really have trouble with some m/wd's out there how have a decent amount of mdef, and even then it's a battle to the death over who has more immunes.

In sw I play M/WD and roam around with 200k+ pdef and 360k hp... on top of that, -50% incoming dmg, yes, I use the full honor set. Statted purely stam/hp and stam/def (4 and 2) I also still have 110k matk, which in some cases can be low yes, but if your not try to be a one many army the whole sw, you do get help with those pesky p/k's :) As for the crit rate, mine is 4.1k in sw in honor gear, which equates to 65% crit chance. I love this set up and there are few classes I have any trouble with soloing, unless the person themselves are quite OP aswell, then ofc there can always be issues ^.^ Anyway, I can fill you in on any questions you may have with what exactly I use for buffs/gear or wtv. I do know many mages like stam/hp statting say a beth set, though personally, I just don't find that to be enough protection since I usually don't have a pocket healer or groups for my siege's.

@Gideon /wave and yes that extra magic immune does certainly counter M/WD's well ^.^

Well, seems like we end up sieging them like 2-3 times a week anyway, so you can always inspect him then, lol.

Also, he doesn't need a healer with all those universal pots. I'd really not like seeing him with a pocket healer.

Hmmmm. I guess part of the complication is Heretic's crappy siege bracket (aka rape or be raped, there is no middle ground).

I do expect to be running up against Shin and Kanu and the rest of the scariest of the scary. Maimed... *shudder*.

So, I can't sacrifice too much ma/crit. If I do, I might live a second or two longer and still not manage to kill anyone at all. What I freaking need is Vanish. Wtb invis pots that work in combat. -_-

At any rate, I don't think that setup you have would work for me r2p. Beyond the fact that I can't afford to stat or plus another 7 pieces, I think I would just lose too much attack power.
I love this set up and there are few classes I have any trouble with soloing, unless the person themselves are quite OP aswell, then ofc there can always be issues ^.^
Yeah... that would be everyone we siege.

How on earth are you coming up with 110k ma if you're in the 7 piece set all def statted? Is your accessory set 6 int/ma? I was more or less going to do the opposite, 3 piece, wings and aoth salv set. Hmmmm.

I did a charplan with full honor gear set + Crimson Punishment + Proof Ring/Earrings and Necklace (Strike of Des/Glor Civil. / Rider of Tidal Wave). All honor gear pieces have the same stats, runes and tier as the one shown, and all non-honor gear pieces are the exact same as the cape shown as well, with the final attribute result on the right.

Do with HK crit buff + Energy Influx, you can get 4k crit, and 77k matk puts you at around a little over 100k matk with Mdam food fully buffed.

Pdef is a little less than what I'd thought though. With 10% from pet, 50% from Briar shield, and 25% from K/P buff, and 9k from stam buffs, that puts you at only 174k Pdef.

Yea, that might be true given your sw bracket.

I use matk food in sw, so that should explain it :p Also, I use crit acsessories, never been a fan of aoth set, which are all statted 4 int/matk 2 int/stam.

As for using only 3 pieces, the problem I see there, is that 20% just isnt a big enough difference to make it completely worth it, my champion does sw with only the 3 piece set and then the beth hm set, and I honestly dont see it add much to his value since that minor 20% reduction makes me hit a lot lower to start with, and where I would usually get hit for 100k im still getting hit for 80k, really not much difference. Then trying the 7 piece set on my mage I could really see it, taking alot of hits in a row that extra 30% dmg reduced ends up so you can take a lot more hits. I find it as though a curve on a graph, rather linear, the more hits you are able to take, the more it ends up benefiting you.

As you said, in your cause however, given you may be getting hit harder by those OP guilds, that extra 30% may not give as much aid to you as it gives to me. Hope that makes sense...

Edit: @Nobble Unbuffed I believe for me it is 155k hp, 61k matk, 4.1k crit, 75k pdef

I don't think there's any cheap way to gear for PvP short of statting 6-7 pieces of gear. If the top R/M's can be stopped with just a 20% damage reduction... I don't think they'd still be playing that class lol.

Hello...for my m/wd in siege...i high tier all my armor pieces with 3 int and 3 stam to ensure a decent amount of health and pdef and mdef for pve and to not loose as much when i swap to pvp gear. my pvp gear consists of stating 3 stam hp and 3 stam pdef on the same accessories that i use for pve and wings(my reasoning was since im a mage and my priority is to take out high priority targets in siege, i dont use the salvation set which automatically nerfs your damage by the 8% magic power not to mention the matt loss)...I use 6 pieces for pvp...for my pve gear those 6 pieces are stated 6 int matt...and since accessories dont have pdef and mdef, i dont have to high tier it. fully buffed in my pvp gear...im over 300k pdef and 288k mdef and around 250k hp with 140k matt with mdam food depending on what buffs i get before entering siege...i would like to say that with a healer target healing me...no single rogue or other class except maybe m/wd flame spam can kill me even against ppk or heretic...but then again if you give people the chance to max cd burn you...you will probably die regardless of the class...however even without a healer...this build is quite tanky and the max damage i take without them using many cooldowns are around 40-50k CC or LBs when im fully buffed.

I just don't see this at all... If it works for you that is great, however buffed in my PvP gear, a warden or rogue is still able to hit me for 60k+ with cd's and that is with 60% dmg reduced. So I doubt that you are only getting hit for 40k outside of Honor gear as a mage, regardless of that Pdef.

I do like your set up though as its designed for a high Def and Dmg, and would work quite nicely in siege wars of large groups.

Ok, now I don't want to start pvp gear at all and just farm balloons at home. Shin and Kanu would still find me, dagnabit.

I geared my warmage, so I am not currently using Aoth mysticism, I am using pom + mem crit set. Depending on who we're fighting I switch to Aoth salvation set, which apparently everyone hates, but I find at least at this gear level that it does make a diff for me, especially when we have k/p buff and my house hoes remember to give me scarlet love. In that case, I am able to survive combo throw from a pve statted rogue without any problems, thanks to briar shield.

Now, if someone would heal me before they close to finish me with whatever, that would be great, but that's another issue.

I can barely hit 220k hp tho, which makes me not a priority heal target, which is partly why I feel like, for me personally, I should try and max health and pdef. My salvation set is someone's old tank set from the GCH-era, so I think I will start with wings and then see if cleaning it and restatting is worth it.

And I may as well start with the three pieces, cause it's not like I couldn't add the four in later if that turns out bad.

I dunno, I feel like siege has changed so much during my six-month vacation. Part of my problem is I feel like almost every other m/wd out there is using their skills better than me, but making the adjustment from "almost everyone is a one hit with EGWB" to "only Mojojojo is a one-hit and everyone else needs two rotations and every single soul in the entire group targets me first, so good luck living more than a second anyway" is tough.

I see m/wd in other guilds doing massive damage and I know I am doing something very very wrong, I just can't quite put my finger on what. Trying to transition back from WoW's slower, lower-damage, minute long fights in a no-lag atmosphere, back to siege.... jeebus. It makes me miss p/s now more than ever, and I think regardless, m/wd is a better PvP class, when played right. It simply has more range and utility.

But gearing clearly isn't the only thing I am doing very wrong. :doofy:

Mmm, not always the best solution ;p One M/WD from PPK whom shall remain nameless actually came to our server for a visit to check out my gear setup as they could not take me down to half HP in multiple 1v1 arenas. Everyone always has a setup that can beat yours in this game, it's really just which one you feel most comfortable with. :)
