I keep hearing from people how cooking doesn't make profit. Or that it's only good for personal use.
This of course is wrong.
The biggest problem people have here is that they don't know how to market their food. That combined with other players drowning the market in cheap foods.
This is how I price the foods I make for sale on the AH.
Step 1:
Break down the mats into whites.
For those who don't already know, it takes 2 white mats to make 1 green mat, and 12 white mats to make 1 blue mat.
Step 2:
Check the price for 1 white mat of each type needed.
Step 3:
Multiply the price for 1 mat by how many mats you need.
Step 4:
Divide the total by the number of product per production.
(White recipes = 3, Green recipes = 2)
Step 5:
Add a small amount for your time and effort. This is important, don't sell yourself short! Those mats don't harvest themselves, and you could be farming gold from clops instead of cooking with that time.
For example, if you were making Doom's Banquets the recipe calls for:
4 saps (blue), 2 lumber (blue), 1 bundle (green) *note I never include the rare mat myself, but you can if you want.
Now lets say the herb and wood whites are 1k/ea.
That's 12 x 6 = 72. (74 if you include the rare mat)
So 72 / 2 = 36, add a bit of profit, so lets say 40-50k/ea.
Currently on Grimdal, Doom's sell anywhere from about 75k to 90k/ea.
Now, I don't always use this formula, but if you follow it you wont lose anything.
Just so everyone is clear on this, if it costs you 36k worth of mats just to make the food, don't sell it for 30k or you're just ripping yourself off. Do yourself a favor and just put the mats on the AH. You'll make more that way, and the cooks don't go bankrupt.
If you do planting, and it costs 36k worth of mats to make the food, don't sell it for 30k, or once again you're just ripping yourself off. Put the mats on the AH, and make full cash. There's no point in dropping the price on something to the point where no one will list it on the AH anymore.
If the food costs too much, best solution is to lower the price of mats. Yes you could corner the market at 30k/ea, but you could also corner the market on mats doing the same thing, which would lower the price on foods as well.
