[Guide] Cooking 101

Cooking guide

So while I was levelling my cooking, I was looking for answer to some of my questions and … well I finished by finding all I needed but not regrouped in a simple, clear and complete guide. Therefore, I decided to write on.

** Note: this is the first version of this guide; if you have elements to include or if I made errors, please tell me (politely plz) so I can improve the guide with your help; 2.0 style baby! Thx **

Content

1 - Starting with cooking
So you want to learn cooking, where you are at the right place to start. In this guide, we will try to cover every aspects of cooking from the basic learning to the location of the hardest to get recipes!

Why would you like to cook I ear people say? Well for one thing, it’s part of the game mechanic so why not exploit everything this game has to offer to the fullest?! But mainly, you would want to learn cooking because of what it allows you to craft, sell, trade, give and use (just look at the bonuses offered!). Note that compared to House Maid food, the food you craft has no expiration date and can be sold or traded.

1.1 - Learning the base skill
;
To learn the basic skill of cooking, you must talk to a NPC in Varanas Lower City East zone, her name is Marlyn Cooker and she is located at 47.8 | 26.2. Once you talked with her, you can start to craft and level your skill.

1.2 - What you need to craft food
;
First, you need a recipe. Every two levels, you have access to new recipes.

Then, you need the raw material. There are two types of raw material you will need in order to cook in Runes of Magic. First are the raw materials you gather (herb and wood). You can either buy these resources at the AH or gather them yourself (note that to gather resources, you must have a minimal level of gathering skill, therefore if you want to gather the resources you need for crafting, you will have to do it from the beginning or to level eventually these skills). Secondly, you will need additional resources to craft food, but these cooking specific resources, MUST be purchased from a NPC (usually located right next to the crafting station and/or the NPC that sells recipe).

Once you have the recipe and the raw material, all you have to do is go next to a crafting station, press “ K ” and then choose “ Cooking ”. There, you will see in the left part of the dialog box that will open what you can craft and in what quantity. You can choose at the bottom of this window the number of item you want to be crafted and click “ craft ”. While you will be crafting, you will see the number the item you must craft to level to the next level. Remember, you must always level two levels at a time (since a new recipe is only available every two levels).

What’s with rune? From a certain level, every type of production (crafting) requires a specific rune. In the case of cooking, from the level 11 every good you produce requires 1 activate rune.

1.3 - Levelling past 20;
When you reach level 20, you will realize that when you craft, you no longer receive experience toward the levelling. That is because to level past 20, you must realize a quest. This quest will be available from the same NPC you learned cooking from, which incidentally is also the one who’s been selling you all recipes from level 1 to 40. The quests name is “Bring me Fish Egg Sandwiches” and infos on that quest can be found here: http://www.es.runesdatabase.com/quest/42…-egg-sandwiches

Why is that so? Why do I have to make a quest to level passed a certain point? Well, simply put, every profession has four ranks: apprentice (20), craftsman (40), adept (60) and master (80). You can learn as many professions as you wish on the apprentice rank, can become a craftsman in six trades, be adept in three and ultimately master one profession. Therefore, they ask you for a quest to make sure you actually want to level passed that specific level and that you are not simply using your skill.

You will have to do the same to level passed 40. The quest will be available for the NPC named XXX located XXX.

Since patch 4.0.1 (July 2011), we can now level passed 60. To do that, simply talk to the NPC named Sam Paresh located in Varanas Lower City West (29.8 / 46.3). When you talk to him, he will give you a package including, among other things, a pot.

3 - FAQ
1) Q: What is the difference between the House Maid food and crafted food?
A: While House Maid food is just a click away, it has several drawback compared to crafted food. First, House Maid food must be consumed fast (it expires while crafted food doesn't). Then, you don't choose what your House Maid cooks for you (it's determined by her level) while you have total control over what you actually craft (you can therefor craft food way under you level to give to a friend who tries to level ATM for example). Crafted food will also last longer (buffs tend to last longer) and can be traded, given or sold to anyone. At the same time, there are different quality of food crafted for every level. To get the basic bonus (+ X magical attack for example), the material needed is easily obtained. To get the same type of boost as you get from house maid food (ex: + X magical attack x 11% + X magical attack) you will need to get materials that are more difficult to obtain and/or more expensive to buy.

Very well done, yes... Couple comments:

1) Proofread what you wrote, or if you want to, I can do it for you. In some cases it looks like wrong words were used in sentences. E.g, "Why would you like to cook I ear people say" (should be hear) or "want to level passed that specific level" (should be past), etc.

I realize that this is polish and usually applied to guide once contents are set. Still, need to be done at some point if you want to make it a proper guide.

2) I recommend linking to runesdatabase instead of wiki. It is more comprehensive and better linked.

For example, lets say I want to learn "Moti's Blended Sausage". The link at http://www.runesdatabase.com/recipe/550471 gives me good overview of the recipe, shows all materials and costs that are needed to make one, gives calculator on what is needed if I make certain number, lets me click on components (such as http://www.runesdatabase.com/item/200767) which in turn shows the vendors who sell it, where those vendors are, what their names and location are, and more.

It is not exactly an explanation site as much as reference encyclopedia, but then wiki does not have good explanations either. And runesdatabase is a good way to let prospective cook do his own exploration.

3) This thread, while nobody knows if it will be maintained or not, is a good starting point on obtaining production runes.

http://forum.us.runesofmagic.com/showthread.php?t=56771

Activates are dirt cheap, so buying then on AH is not exactly bank-breaking, but still I imagine some people want their own.

4) Would cover a little more the pluses and minuses of crafted food versus HK food. In particular, the cost (HK is free), the effort (HK is easier), the selection (HK is much worse), the variety (even if food on HK menu, HK will only give it when his cooking level is in certain range)

The general feeling among some crafters is that HK food makes cooking somewhat of a waste of a crafting slot. That is true in some way, but cooking gives you many things that HK can't; and a new person should be aware of pros and cons.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

There are 2 more ways to obtain the materials needed to cook things;

1) You can currently buy all mats that are not rare and under lvl 38 from the ancient momentos perosn in Boulderwind village in weeping coast. the maximum it will cost u will be 4 mems and about 20k gold and it will provide u with a 100 of material u choose already refined to the second stage (the bundle, timber and sand lvl). After that you can buy the mats for mems again above lvl 51 in Northern Janost Forest. No idea why the lvl 38-51 mats r not being offered in mems

2) You can buy all mats for honor pts and some gold in the mercenary square in OS. they cost 5 honor pts and some gold to get ONE bundle, timber or sand (note the one). u can also buy all the rarer mats from another person in the same place but they cost like 2k-5k honor pts and some gold and will give u 50 of them in bundles, timber or sand.

Another thing to note is that if u cant find a mob ur lvl to farm acivate runes off, u can just start the honor party and all mobs that drops them below ur lvl will start dropping them again as if u were in their lvl range again. Worked like a charm at those elite nagas in WC with my lvl 66 scout :-D
