Language Translator Addon

This is possible right? to make an addon where all chat ur supposed to see is automatically converted to a chosen language. So if someone speaks spanish to you, you wont see spanish but english (for example), u respond in english and the spanish person (for example) doesnt see spanish but english.

Would it be possible? Sure. But the amount of resources you would need to make it work would be prohibitive. You wouldn't get very good translations either, though maybe enough to make it usable.

Google translate also has access to several servers and a very large database of pre-translated strings, your typical home PC does not. Nor can we access Google translate via a Runes of Magic add-on.

For other requirements and problems of natural language translations, I direct you to this Wiki page.

Aye matey?

This reminds me of that pirate addon they had in WoW that converted all of your outgoing chat to pirate speech.

Oh, I'd love to have that. :D

I'm always sorry when a player leaves our game, but making a forum announcement about it is...pointless.

That addon uses search strings to find and replace outgoing text in a set pattern. Much easier than creating something that would do an actual translation (which imo is near impossible, and completely not feasable).

ffxi auto translate function, and yes its doable

Final Fantasy XI had a functional auto translate function. You had to type out the first 3 letters of the word or phrase you wanted, hit tab, and it would give you a list of words or phrases to pick from (the game had a big list of ordinary and game related vocabulary built in to the translator). You would pick a word, and it would appear in brackets on your screen, and translated for the other people. The communication was rough but doable. It came out like this: [Gather together][casting spell][Valor Minuet].

Of course some people just HAD to have fun with it though, like:

[Mithra] [Hand] [Job] 5 gil

LOL

At any rate this system made it possible for people to coordinate parties with people that spoke in any language. For a game like this, a similar system is definately doable.

If GOOGLE Translator messes up in translation, how can anyone do it?

Because instead of trying to translate anything spoken, it translated only the words in its own database. Again, it is limited, but when you add game terms and phrases to the list you can at least function as a party.
