lol, this made me laugh.

I know I'm not supposed to call out GM's name on here.. butttttt a certain GM used this as statement to lock the thread. Which made me rofl when I read it several times to be sure I seen what I thought I did.

Lets not promote necrophilia here.

Just for giggles.. lets post the definition of "Necrophilia"

Quoted from "Merriam-Webster"

obsession with and usually erotic interest in or stimulation by corpses

lol I'm glad the thread was closed though, because promoting the sexual abuse of corpses is a bit.. odd :p

He was most likely referring to the practice of "necroing" a thread, i.e. posting in a thread that hasn't seen the light of day in months or, in some cases, over a year. GM's and FM's routinely close such threads because most of the time their usefulness has passed.

Pretty sure the necrophilia line was intended as a joke

I've ran some fairly large forums in the past, much larger than this one, and never once have I seen it called "necroing" or "necrophilia" .. Not even sure how it relates to a thread being what the forums community calls "bumping".. which means exactly as it reads.. you're bumping a thread back to the top of the stack by posting in it.

Bumping is very different from necroing and yeah, it is always worth it to click on threads closed by Mr K. Never know what kind of new take on the thread deadness will pop up.

You managed a large forum, congrats. But that wasn't this one.

Communities will often create a lingo all their own, usually by accident, that helps distinguish those in the "know" from those who are not. For instance, try describing what a "tank" is to someone who's never played or heard of a MMO. Because you've never heard of it or seen it's use in such a fashion doesn't mean it isn't used that way familiarly by the community.

That's not to call into question your intelligence, btw, just explaining my position here, your response came across as a bit defensive when I intended no offense.

But, all discussion aside, while I recognize that the FM/GM was most likely joking using a term like necrophilia I think is in poor taste. But there's very little about the internet that isn't in poor taste these days.

Hell, being polite to someone online is something of an oddity now :D

While showing love to a dead thread might not be quite the same thing as showing it to a corpse... maybe in Kalvan's mind, they're exactly the same thing.
In a world of black, white, and grey... I'd be bright friggin' purple. M/P on Reni.

lol Wasn't posted by K, it was another GM. Actually bumping describes the act of moving any thread to the top. You typically see it in "For Sale/Trade" sub-forums where the OP makes a post with the word "bump" in it with intention of moving it to the top and catching more attention. Especially useful when the "New Post" link is active. Works just the same as "bumping" a thread from the dead.

Naw, I wasn't being defensive at all I was just giving a very brief background of myself & forums, and just saying from all my time spent dealing with forums, this is the first I came across this term being used.

lol Wasn't Kalvan.

Anyway I really think GM/FM's should choose another term or just stick with "necroing" rather than "Necrophilia" because it is in poor taste as said above and a disgusting as I said before lol

Hey, if it is in Urban Dictionary, it must be true.

thread necrophilia

Posting on a thread in the forum that has long been ignored and uncared for or dead thread. Especially when done in large amounts. Most often the work of n00bs.

Why is that sexxxygurl555 chick posting in the threads no one has replied to since 2004?

And then there are assorted images to be found by googling, many of which I shall not post due to their questionable tastes:

BTW, I fully intend, several months from now, when this thread is long since forgotten, to come back and necro it.

Maybe people just don't understand what necrophilia really is. Still not sure how resurrecting an old thread has any relation what so ever to sexually violating a corpse.. but ok.

Whenever I see the term 'necro thread' I always derive it from the term necromancy, which is raising the dead. Now whenever I see 'necro thread' though, I'm going to be thinking in terms of the other lol

GM necro-ing posts imho is creating more problems then solving any issues.

Instead of trying to keep it simple by posting on already existing tread about the same issue (no matter how old), you are here advised to open a new tread, thus create more problems once someone search for solution. (multiple treads about the same issues)

I can understand if tread is 5-10 years old, but here whole community is at top 2-3 years old.

Really depends on the issue. Some issues are eternal and the old information is as relevant as the current posts. Many are not, and are outdated... also, people start responding to the posts from those long since gone.

Taking a look at the stickies, you can kinda see the effect. Some of them are quite outdated. Even the generally recommended, well written and relevant guides like the statting for beginners one or the overview of item enhancements, need a bit of sprucing up.

Thanks sewerpipe for that laugh, I needed that at work today. Could be an honest simile...but still funny just the same.

Words have different meanings in different contexts. I knew what "Necrophilia" meant before you defined it here. However, when I read "let's not promote Necrophilia", in the context it was expressed in, I took it to mean a love of dead posts, not of dead bodies.

So the question isn't where was the FM's mind... the question is, where was yours ;)

In all seriousness, now that you've made the connection, I'll probly cringe if makes the comment again. But until I read this post, I didn't see any harm in him posting a word that, to most frequenters on this forum, looked like a funny word the FM made up in relation to necro threads.

lol If anyone in this community thinks that Necrophilia is some funny word a FM made up to describe the bumping of an old thread.. you shouldn't be worrying about where my mind was.. lol you should be worried about the people on here who know think Necrophilia is the practice of raising dead things lol.

OP,

As rubyeyessaid, I have a feeling it was intended as a joke, if you haven't played D2, then you wouldn't understand the reference.

Eh.. from the way I have seen other things go on this forum.. I don't think they understood the meaning behind the word to be honest, but that's my opinion.

Some people just don't know how to take a joke. When I am the first (well, second technically) to post in a necro'd thread, I simply put three words: "klaatu barada nikto" which is a reference to several movies, most noticeably in the meaning of necroing a thread it is a reference to "Army of Darkness". If you simply have a lack of humor, which you seem to, then just let others enjoy the comments made, and go have yourself a nice hot cup of STFU. :) Enjoy your day!
