Not so Smooth Moves... Comp Help Needed

Okay...

I went from Windows Vista to Windows 7... went from 1G RAM to 2G RAM (would have been more but the geek I went to insisted that Gateway was wrong when it said I could upgrade my bios to accept more)... and went from Full version of RoM to the Slim version...

I have loaded the latest version of Adobe Flash Player and the Latest Java.

The problem I am having is that while my toons move faster and Holy Crap I had no idea how fast those teleporters really worked... my toons and my mouse have become jerky. It is really hard on the eyes and the mouse movement is a little frustrating.

Before the "upgrade"... my toons moved really smooth in the outer areas and became an issue only when I was very close or inside the city... my mouse worked just fine wherever.

The only thing I can think of is that I missed something I must have had before when reloading the computer. So... anyone have any suggestions on how I can get things running smoothly again?

Mouse sensitivity might need adjusting. Pop into control panel and play with it. That would be especially so if both ROM and non-ROM (I know, who runs anything but ROM on their PCs?) apps are having issues with the mouse.

2GB RAM is not horrible - supposedly Win7 has better memory management than Vista. Still, 4GB is better and memory is cheap these days as long as it is not outdated old memory. What is your computer model? I am more inclined to trust the manufacturer than a person messing with BIOS.
-- Rustyx --- 92R / 92S / 92M on Reni (Guild KnightShift). Yes, running the new FOTM R/M, cause I am not elf enough to be WD/S.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

Lost the use of my onboard sound card in the process. I get a "Code 10" for it in the Device Manager.

The housemate tried to use an old SoundBlaster that he had but it isn't compatable with W7. No biggie though... his brother-in-law dinks with computers and has a bunch of them that will work in this so all that takes is the waiting for a time when both are off work and available in order to get it.

Although it's nice... sound is not a necessity in playing the game... so I can wait.

But that jerkiness... yep... just a tad hurtful to these old eyes. And the jerkiness of the mouse... very frustrating to my impatience and quick temper.

To a gal off the street... you have to admit I am justified in being puzzled about the jerkiness in movement. I got a better Operating System... I have more RAM... and I am using the Slim Version... it seemed to me that these were all conductive to a better game. So when that wasn't the case... I just figured maybe I had a program before that I forgot about that needed to be loaded.

I guess not... eh?

This is the majority of your problem:

Display Devices
---------------
Card name: Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type:
DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5B60&SUBSYS_06201462&REV_00
Display Memory: 894 MB
Dedicated Memory: 127 MB

It's a rather old video card with the bare minimum video RAM. Fortunately, your machine does have a PCIe X16 video expansion slot available--it's where your current video card resides. There are a number of newer and more capable PCIe video cards available that would be a major improvement over the card you're using now.

And the tech guy was wrong. Your computer will support up to 4GB of system RAM.

Hope this helps.

You can get 1GB nice GeForce GT520 for about 50 bucks. That would be more then enough to run RoM.

Okay...

First the questions... mind you I'm an imbicile when it comes to computers... but my inquiring mind wants to know.
1) Why did it work just fine with crappy Vista but is not with the supposedly better W7...
2) Why did it work with the Full RoM version but not the Slim...

Now...
I have visited Amazon... I can afford Amazon... I cannot afford NewEgg... eBay makes me nervous... I like Amazon.

What in tarnation am I looking for?

Perhaps you can give suggestions as to what specs I am looking for... maybe even brand names.
Am I limited to 32bit? Cuz when I asked for pc video cards and clicked 32bit... I got like... two choices. Course... I was asking for just Amazon as a vendor because along with being computer illiterate... I am also a cheapskate and they offer free shipping on orders over $25.
Heck... maybe the dude I'm getting the sound card from even has a better video card... that would cost me maybe a four pack of Blue Monsters... THAT is even cheaper.
This "Free Game" has already cost me what I consider a small fortune just upgrading my system. Mind you... what I was doing before this game... that vid card worked just peachy and what RAM I had was adequate.

But knowing what I am looking for and what is W7 compatable would be a HUGE help... not that you have never been anything but helpful... but I need a nudge in the right direction... maybe even a map.

You can get 1GB nice GeForce GT520 for about 50 bucks. That would be more then enough to run RoM.

Oh Hey... lookie there... a suggestion... a brand name and specs... I don't suppose they make a vid card and audio card all in one? I suppose that would be too darned convenient. Um... just in case... if that is "more than enough"... what would be "good enough?" I saw a lot of 512mb... how would those be?

NVIDIA 9500-9800 can be found regularly for $25-35 on newegg, check open boxed or refurbished. They will make it fantastic. As for your Ram 32 bit OS can handle up to 4Gig, it wouldn't kill you to look for refurbished 2x2 DDR2. I'm going to assume yours is 240 pin. Also if their are any channeling issues between your Ram that would solve it.

Really though your machine is getting a bit up there in age, you have one of the first ever dual core hyperthreading CPU's. Honestly save your cash and watch Neweggs open box page. I found my son a great Asus 3.2ghz 6gig ram PC for $249. Sometimes they go way cheaper then that.

2x2 DDR2 = ????? Is that Martian? Or maybe Star Wars? I need R2D2?

Okay... and I am really not being sarcastic so if I come off as sarcastic I am truely sorry in advance. But maybe I need to stress the fact that I am semi-old... physically broken... single... and on disability. My husband and I divorced back in 1987 and I have never remarried because... well... I seem to always find the wrong guys (TMI?) I need cheap. I have already dipped too much into my medication fund as it is. I do think it's cute that so many of you assume that folks on here are gainfully employed... have spouses that help with expenses... or are kids with generous parents... but that's not my case. Think of the scrounging in the couch cushions for cigarette money kind of cheap... the cutting my own hair to save a buck kind of cheap.

Because I have no life... my kids are grown and gone and live in different states and are busy having kids of their own... I really don't have a life. This game was supposed to be a cheap form of entertainment to occupy and while away the hours. My problem is... I really like it... and would love to continue playing it... but good golly... $60 for RAM... $20 for a new keyboard and mouse... $17 for a headset with a mic (there's a guild that'll have me that uses teamspeak so I have to have those)... $198 for Windows 7 from Walmart (gotta pay my housemate back for that)... now probably $35 to $50 for a video card... and I am crossing my fingers that my housemates brother-in-law has an audio card (or that headset was for naught).
So folks... cheap suggestions.
I know this old computer isn't gonna last forever... but I'm hoping it lasts long enough for me to save enough to get something that will last another 10 years. Heck... who knows... there might be 4 or 5 years left in this one once I put all this crap into it.
So... yeah... cheap... think really really cheap and just a tad above adequate.

As a matter of fact... if any of you folks have a tower or a laptop laying around that you aren't using that is better than this thing I have (no Dell's or Macs please)... maybe we can work something out. I may have to make payments with you sending whatever it is upon completion of the payments... you get the idea.

YAY!!! The drivers I downloaded for my onboard audio worked!!! I have sound!!!

The brother-in-law is looking for a video card but he's pretty sure he doesn't have one.

But hey... at least ONE problem has been solved!!!

1) Why did it work just fine with crappy Vista but is not with the supposedly better W7...
2) Why did it work with the Full RoM version but not the Slim...

This was a mystery to me. Considering that no one really answered these questions told me it was a mystery for other folk as well.
I like mysteries in movies and books... but not in my life. In life I like answers... in life... mysteries make my head hurt.

So... instead of trying to figure this out with technology... which I suck at... I thought I'd figure it out using what I AM good at... logic.

Now... the other variables in this equation had been addressed. Windows 7 fixed the problem I had with Windows Vista. Even that one extra gig of RAM made my toons move faster... which solved another problem. I was left with the lack of fluid motion. I had it in the Full Version... but not in the Slim Version. I had used the same vid card for both... that had not changed.
Logic dictated that if I had smooth movements in the Full Version... but not in the Slim Version... it should work again in the Full Version.
I uninstalled the Slim Version. A tad over five hours later... I have finished installing the Full Version.
The RAM help is still there. My toons retained the faster movement and the teleporters take me places instantaniously. The installation of the Full Version also did the trick. My toons now move smoothly in the outlying areas with only a smidge of hinderance in the city.
I suppose when it comes to the game versions... if it ain't broke... don't fix it.
I don't understand it... but then again... it's the technology side of things I don't understand.
I am awful tempted to try to upgrade the bios this weekend... but I'm pretty satisfied with what I have now. I might just put that extra gig away in a safe place cuz as far as I am concerned... it ain't broke... and I should quit while I'm ahead and not push my luck.

I want to thank all you fine folks for your help. It never ceases to amaze me how helpful and patient the players on this site are and how quick they are to come to someone's aid. I wish I could meet more folks like you outside of the game. I wish you all nothing but the best.

See ya in the game. ((HUGS))
