WTB MOAR FPS- What Video Card would be best?

Well, I'm about to rip my old ATI Radeon 6770 out of my computer case, drench it in gasoline and set it on fire- after trying to do a ToSH run last night that saw me pulling 1-15 fps in the hallway, and 0fps on the first boss fight. No FPS = no DPS, so... yeah.

I do not mind spending money on a video card. After the horror of this one, which has never let me pull more than 35 fps standing still in my house on lowest graphics with every single effect turned off (*cough, and I do mean EVERY visual effect), I don't care to throw money at this problem to make it go away forever. I'm looking at the Nvidia 670, $375 - $425, and the only reason I haven't pushed the "Buy it Now!" button on Newegg is that I'm not sure I'll actually be able to get it to perform in RoM, since RoM is so gorram bug-ridden.

I don't mind spending the monies as long as the monies actually get me performance.

So, who gets great FPS in RoM, and what are you running to get them?

My rig is decent, it has a Phenom II quad core and 8GB, Windows 7, and I beefed up my power supply recently, so I know my comp can take just about whatever card I want to throw at it- I just need to know what actually works.

And please for the love of God, don't tell me what I have is fine, Paz has spent literally hours trying to troubleshoot mine to no avail. Even if it's specs are OK, it has never performed worth a crap. I'm done with it. I'mma go all Office Space on it as soon as I rip it out.

I cant suggest a card but I have the same issue with first boss tosh. Every time I receive heals my fps drops out and I have to hit the esc key. Makes doing the torches impossible.

rom by far isnt video card limited...cpu/memory and >4gb addressing makes its retarded self happy

but for ur buck

old gtx480 is still OP...insane for 180 bucks

660ti solid performer

if you just have massive compensation issues...2 of these in sli should help

but if u only plan on playing skyrim HD on ultra with ENB injectors, while playing rom and doing some video encoding on the side, all on quad 50" monitors

Send me your old video card instead of destroying it. I'll put it to good use.

Post a dxdiag or it didn't happen. :D

You currently have a card that's ostensibly better than the one I'm using. Send it to me, gogogo!

Now that I've said all that crapola, I can't say that I've ever had video lag in ToSh, at least to 1st boss. (I'm too fail to go any further than that. I *have* been to 2nd boss KBN-N and had few video lag issues. I remain fail, however.) Your current card is one generation ahead of mine and *should* be able to do better than that. So, it's possible that your CPU is part of the problem. That's why I made the crack about posting a dxdiag. As Pazabooboo said, the RoM game engine relies almost equally on the CPU and GPU, and nothing short of a complete rewrite or replacement of the game engine is going to fix that.

Remember that Back In The Day, most computers had relatively lousy video processing power, when compared to what's available now, and fairly cheaply, at that. I'm sure that RW, and their publishing partners, wanted to make the game as accessible as possible to as many potential players as possible. Since the RoM engine was allegedly reverse-engineered by ex-pat Blizzard people...the performance requirements were "dumbed down" as best as could be managed to achieve that goal. That's why RoM can allegedly be run (crawled, more accurately) on an Intel P4 with integrated graphics.

It's been haunting us ever since, as more and more capable CPUs/GPUs have entered the market.

At least RoM requires DirectX 9.0c, as compared with the original, vanilla Blizzard product, which only needed DX 7 and a toaster oven...

Future proof.

Grab an Overclocked one from MSI or EVGA for ~250$ and it will be future proof for several generations.

she has the 0x117 error from atikmpag.sys and winblows/flash/64bit hpet and the other 9000 things that causes it. so more troubleshooting kinda moot. the error is fixable but not easy to track down. i decompiled the wer dumps and watchdogs but couldnt find the exact conflicts. there was definitely more than 1

i had that error and the 0x116 when i first went to win7 and it took a lonnnnng time to fix :/

she just fed up with it me thinks and wont gimme administrator remote token ><

Sounds like a really badly corrupted video driver install that just wouldn't or couldn't be cleaned up. I presume that nuking and reinstalling Windows just wasn't an option...

I haven't had any issues like that, but I'm kind of stuck with the Dell-supplied drivers for my card. And Dell has, obviously, never issued an update for them. Drivers from ATI fail to install because the video card is semi-proprietary to Dell, damn their flabby, black hearts to hell...

I can't be the only one who heard that ROM has stability issues with higher end video hardware. My guildies with very nice hardware tend to complain about problems all the time; meanwhile my old dual core and my $5 several generation old video card runs ROM just fine. Going high end and buying top of the line $400-$500 video card is kinda like buying a fast finely tuned race car to drive in rural area on dirt roads. It won't get you anywhere fast.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

reinstalling is usually a good fix..but the hpet thing is bios only (if its modifiable depending on the company) theres even a windows hotfix made to help with this it's so prevalent and painful to fix. (i think hers is flash reserving video overhead..it screws up the way windows allocates resources and overloads the video card "virtually" causing it to constantly modify its clock rate and mem timings. used to be able to stop flash from using hardware acceleration but now its a bitcch to truly turn off.)

god i hated my old dell..pro hardware but too much BS software that was nearly impossible to get rid off without causing problems. i ended up using modified vid drivers from a laptop gaming site :D

and its true what rustyx said..this game is so old that all the new fancy eyecandy and such just causes rom to have a seizure. a lot of the gpu driver tricks/optimizations for more fps are hidden and you have to use things like nvidia inspector to shut off. and rom hates stuff thats not from its commodore gaming era coding :p

Have fun with the gibberish. I would give Paz my remote key, but after he finds my midget pr0n stash, will he still respect me in the morning? And I get the feeling every mount I have in RoM will turn into a giant transformer...

Can I not just fix this by getting a new vid card? Come on, boys. The one it came with, an Asus ATI, think it was a 5790, ran RoM just fine til the fan fried.

I observed similar things to what pink hat pointed out.

I joke about it all the time: your fancy computers with all their speed and extra ram are able to process all the crashes inherent to ROM, whereas my older model cannot, thus I keep playing while you crash.

I'd be more worried about receiving a payment from him after he makes a backup of it for himself.

MSI R7970 Lightning would be the best
MSI N680GTX Lightning is almost the same as one above
with any of those your FPS would be over 100 all the time for sure but those are the best so they are most expensive
btw lightning cards have dust clean technology that will clean all the dust out of video card as long as you reboot your computer once in a while.

XFX Radeon HD 7970 would be cheaper and also is one of the best ones

XFX Radeon HD 7870 or MSI R7870 Hawk is about 200$ and are worth the price.

I know I posted many AMD cards and only one invidia but in many benchmarks AMD wins over invidia in most games. hope fan will chose something from this list and will not say that she has 0 fps when we are killing boss.

Send me your old video card instead of destroying it. I'll put it to good use.

Was what I was thinking too, though after looking at her game preformance with it...
Even my computer with no graphics card at all runs the game better with standard 14-18 FPS in TOSH 1st lol.

Ruisen, Paz says I have driver conflicts with other stuff in Win 7. And so far he hasn't been able to lock them down. We've done everything but let him remote into my system, and I'm going to let him in, God forgive me.

I know I did not have these issues with the card that came with the system. Well, until the fan on it died. That's when I took it into Best Buy and paid a stupid sum to let the Geek Squad install some horrible card in it. I told the geek, I'm a gamer, I play an MMORPG and I want high performance. Biggest mistake I ever made with a computer.

I got it home and got 2fps. Game wouldn't even load right. I wailed about this to my gamer geeks in guild, and they were like, Fan, what did you get? I read them the model number and the response was: "that's great- for spreadsheets or Facebook games." Sigh.

I reinstalled my broken one, took the new one back, politely told the Geek Squad where to stick it, and got this 6770 on my guild-geek's recommendation, but it never performed like my old one. It has never given me decent fps, and I've had to set the graphics lower and lower and mod more and more effects out to be able to play in instances, but at this rate, I literally can't hit the mobs, or the boss.

So, if Paz can't fix whatever conflicts I'm having, I'll get a new Nvidia, just because Paz, my friendly neighborhood uber-geek, is more familiar with their issues with RoM than the ATI cards. Cause I literally can't play like this.

Why not just buy a new, identical video card?

Cause it's an older card, and I was looking for higher performance. I don't think asus even makes those ATI cards anymore. I upgraded my power supply, so why not get a better one? Otherwise, it's kind of a waste. Not to mention, the fan on it was flimsy as hell.

for fps in rom the vid card is prob the least important thing..as long as it's not sharing system mem u fine. fan next time you reboot go into your bios and look for HPET. turn it to 32bit if it's not already.

i will find out how to turn of hardware acceleration in chrome. if you're feeling frisky uninstall everything listed in control panel-->programs-->uninstall thats ATI anything. then go to my computer and right click it, hit manage. device manager-->remove your video card from the system. reboot and install the latest driver without catalyst overcontrolling center.

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/wi…_vista64.aspx#1

so unpack that file and keep going down the through the folders packages\drivers\display\win7_blah blah and just run the msi files there. if it doesnt let you then go back to device manager where you uninstalled your card and update driver from there. dont let winblows find it, just search for it and point it to the aforementioned folder

good luck..god help you

and the word for today children is...aforementioned.

edit: heres a guide too, to help confuse more..and the unpacked bugcheck:

COME SAVE ME.

I'mma download you some special sheep rule 34 stuff, mkay? Just talk me through giving you the reins of the beast and make it all better. There's free mutton for life in my offer. The party of the first part offers one leg of lamb with nylon stockings included for the provided service of doing whatever the hell you just aforementioned.

God now I am confusing myself.
