Karlsruhe - the city no one can spell

This is how you spell it: Karlsruhe.

It isn't really that hard :)

Its probably the consonants together that get you. just think of it as two words. Karls Ruhe. Then you can avoid the omg-it's-foreign 'rlsr' in the middle.

The name comes from Old German, where Karl = game and Ruhe = forge.

While KatalanOrk's comment regarding the meaning of "Karlsruhe" is humorous, it's not entirely accurate.

"Karlsruhe" translates (in "modern" German) as "Charles Peace" I doubt there's a lot of difference here between Old German and Modern German.

"Game Forge" in modern German is "Spiel Schmieden", which appears, to my American eyes, to be not particularly attractive. That might be the reason why the German company decided to keep the English translation. Just an observation of mine.

And, those of us who are desent sperlers and students of history, have little trouble sperling "Karlsruhe". :D

Yeah but don't see me pointing out your sigpic looks, well, as if someone should have made a transparent background for it? Course not I am not that mean. :D

Also, why do people insist on translating names? I mean in this case, we are probably talking about Charles III Willem and we certainly like translating Monarchs, but why in general?

Some friends' of mine had a son named Daan, but in English his name is Danny, they told me smugly. Well, in fact, his name is Daan in English. Why do we call Marcus Antonius by Mark Antony? Alexandros Alexander?

Sometimes there is a reason. Scottish Gaelic names have English translations (or equivalents phonetically) as after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 Gaelic was made illegal. So Iain became John, Coinneach became Kenneth, Seamus (of which Hamish is actually the vocative case) became James, because it was illegal to actually use the language at all. And yet more Scots actually fought for the crown than for the Jacobites. The Hanoverians were just made painfully aware of how dangerous it was to have a force numbering around 30,000 well trained troops walking about the highlands if they couldn't control them. Even whisky (not whiskey) was illegal.

I love Off-topic. :D

bwahahaha this is great. (And i should know :p)

Was a bit heavy on the s and z phonetics but otherwise its not even an accent. try to find something with a bavarian accent or from the folks at the North Sea coast... (region is called East Frisia / Ostfriesland ) , it will only get worse. :p

Our language sucks but atleast we have decent beer - and we can drink it with 16y not 21 (dunno how that is in UK though, 16 too?) :p

Heres a nice and funny example from nice wordplays with the english language ... although i have no idea from which regions the accents are... is that a scottish accent, Inferiority?

the video is just great either way :D

Nah, although neither of the two actors are using a Scottish accent but Ronnie Corbett was Scottish.

If you enjoyed that sketch, I suggest you look up other sketches from "The Two Ronnies". The above linked sketch was taken from a Christmas Special "The One Ronnie" a few years after the death of Ronnie Barker.

Ronnie barker was a marvel with words:

The following is considered to be one of the finest pieces of comedy ever written in Britain - and dare I say it, the whole world?

To hear a Scottish accent, I suggest looking up Stanley baxter, especially his "Parliamo Glasgow" sketches:

The Scots parts are highly exaggerated - we don't all speak like that, though some of us do.
