Totally off-topic, but can anyone explain to me exactly what three smilies in a row conveys as opposed to one?

Or when they stopped being used to convey nuances of communication largely lost in text (e.g., sarcasm, humour) and became methods of communication in their own right (as the imperative 'grow up' communicated entirely by a smilie)?

And if I don't understand all this, does it mean I have passed some critical mass stage of aging where young people no longer make sense at all?
